The eBook and the version of the paperback showing the two eyes in a frame are not the Kaufmann translation. This translation is OK, but you should know that the product information is incorrect.Additionally, the two versions I refer to use ALL CAPS instead of italics. Nietzsche loves his italics, especially in BGE. It's like he's screaming every other sentence.

This is the third book I've read of Nietzsche's. The first was a collection from various writings, and the second was "The Anti-Christ." Beyond Good and Evil was Nietzsche's attempt to summarize his entire philosophy into one book. I don't know if I'd ever call anything Nietzsche wrote a summary, but this book does lay out his principles in black-and-white, and it did help me put some of the pieces together.Below are a few of my takeaways. It's not a summary, because I don't even know if that's possible. So I just wanted to share a few things I've picked up on.On the will to power:If modern (nineteenth century) man is no longer going to believe in God, or at least if they're going to tone down His influence a bit, the next logical step for them was the concept of free will. In a post-enlightenment world, people were trying to understand if there really is a God pulling our strings like puppets. If they weren't going to believe that, the next logical step was free will. Nietzsche rejects free will and instead believes in the will to power. Essentially the will to power is his phrase that means people should aim to take power over themselves and create a "superman" or "overman" out of themselves. Nietzsche sees this as an alternative to the concept of free will.On religion -Another thing that I noticed about Nietzsche after reading a fair bit of his work is that, as critical as he is of Christianity, he seems to have a bit of an affinity for Buddhism, or at least the principles of Buddhism. Buddhism's primary concept is "life is suffering," right? Nietzsche writes extensively about suffering as well, arguing in part that the cause of all great human advancement is suffering. In the Anti-Christ, he often points out that Buddhism is better than Christianity. To be fair, there was a pretty short list of things that weren't better than Christianity, according to Nietzsche.I love the short epigrams and how Nietzsche is capable of concentrating so much meaning into such few words-"Blessed be the forgetful: for they forget their stupidities, too.""Whoever reaches his ideal transcends 'eo ipso.'""'Where the tree of knowledge stands, there is always Paradise': thus speak the oldest and the youngest serpents."*eo ipso = thereby

This ebook is illegible. Someone just did an OCR scan of an existing translation, without fixing any of the problems. About once a sentence, two or more words are crammed together likethis.

Great translation by Judith Norman! I much prefer it to the standard Walter Kaufmann translation.

The written material in this book is acceptable but the book itself, that being the page is not upon opening the book I discovered this. The first three pages had the top right-hand corner are bent to an angle as to where they are not attached to the binding and thus make an indent into the cover of the book which ruins the pristine and beautiful image on the cover with a bulge that is clearly visible. I request a refund or at the very least new copy of this book that is free of misprints.

Terrible print job, Create Space. Margins are microscopic, spacing is awful, text is crammed in so tightly I need reading glasses. Buy any other copy.Good words, bad publisher.

I can merely say I have read it 7 times in the last two years and each time I gain a new insight into Nietzsche's thoughts about how humans can live joyful, productive lives in the face of constant reminders that the world and existence are unpredictable, cruel, often vicious and threatening, The ideas presented here are expanded in his later work.He has a terrific sense of humor. I prefer Walter Kaufmann's translations.

Nietzsche was brilliantly crazy or crazy brilliant, perhaps it was both. Not an obvious genius, but his wisdom is counter-intuitive and worthy of reflection. He was perhaps the most brilliant philosopher of his time, certainly not the most conventional--but arguably the most sagacious about many matters. It is a shame that he descended into madness. He is not to be read quickly, because in so doing you will miss the point. Worth reading and reflecting on, particularly if you study philosophy seriously.

Chapter 2 contains the story of the Beale treasure worth about $20 million in gold, silver, and jewels, and as yet undiscovered in Bedford County, Virginia. Chapter 5 details how the Allies used the Navajo code talkers to thwart the Japanese during WWII. The brilliant author writes in plain language for the lay reader. The book offers 10 cipher challenges with increasing difficulty. A very good book.

I am only half-way through this book but I find this book absolutely fascinating! Not only can you learn about cryptography but you get some very interesting history lessons. Of course these lessons apply to cryptography, which is one of the fascinating parts of this book. History as we know it, was hugely impacted by cryptography.This book doesn't read like most text books we find boring and mundane. I read it as if I was reading a fiction novel, which really helps with the comprehension of the topics presented. Ciphers and Codes presented in the book are explained very clearly, I'd almost dare say near perfectly. There are appendices mentioned where you can study items in further detail (in the back of the book).This book, in my opinion, offers a rock solid foundation for those new to cryptology and can reinforce concepts for those that are well experienced.I highly recommend this book, if you interested in cryptography, history, or science.

Admirable for the thorough background research involved, Singh's book seems unable to successfully shift between being an engaging narrative for newcomers and a detailed analysis of code theory/practice. (Apparently, Kahn's book is the definitive work on the subject for academicians or die-hard hobbyists.) I found the narrative sections to be rather long-winded, while the explanations of various ciphers & codes often too detailed and pedantic, even repetitive. Some reviewers have called this book "light"; I find that a surprising claim, given the heft of 430+ pages and the abundance of meticulous definitions & examples which permeate the text. Certainly there is something here for fans, especially those of a mathematical persuasion. In fact, there must be more than just "something," as most readers have raved about it. Personally, I found the awkward shifts between historical anecdotes and deep cipher theory ruinous to the flow of the story.

From describing very descriptive ancient codes to the fascinating world of quantum computing this author touches on it all with very well illustrated examples to help clarify a very difficult and highly complex subject of cryptanalysis--- with its modern employment of linguists, mathematicians, and computer engineers. It's an ongoing quest to keep our PRIVACY from intrusions of all sources such as governments, business competitors, or prying eyes. There are many privacy issues that both governments and private citizens alike must face in today's technological world. These questions are posed and answered in many ways within the book. One caveat---recalling what our esteemed Statesman Benjamin Franklin once expressed---"Any one who will trade freedom for security deserves neither" The quandary is how government protects its citizens from acts of terror or how citizens may be protected by a tyrannical government--read this bookSimon Singh has produced a manuscript that not only gives one a deeper insight into the world of cryptanalysis from a historical prospective but also the men and women involved in this complex field of science through out the ages,----the brilliant people from various and varied walks of life who have contributed immensely to this science past and present . It covers the humanist aspect from those involved with their various idiosyncrasies of behavior from the selling of data to foreign powers as well as personal behavior that could cause one to be blackmailed by enemies. I am going to the Okavango delta in about a week. Bought several books to learn more about the areas I am going to visit. This book impressed me the most, because the knowledge I acquired through its reading. As the author mixes information of the landscape and climate with the descriptio of the behaviour of different animals, it painted such a vivid image that it is easy now for me to remember that jackals mate for life and both strongly help raise their young,that Baobabs store incredible amounts of water and shrink considerably in the dry season. How acacias become nutritious food through their leaves, seed pods and flowers. How a secretary bird kills snakes, and a poetic description of how the rains bestow life to a thirsty environment. The Kalahari comes to life through this book, like no other I have read on the subject. Highly recomended if you want to know more about the subject, and want fluid prose.

This is a superb book about a little known region. Whether to bring back memories of a trip, or plan for a future journey, or just to enjoy -- highly recommended.

The Edge is an organization that presents original ideas by today's leading thinkers from a wide spectrum of scientific fields. The 2017 Edge question is, “What do you consider the most interesting recent (scientific) news? What makes it important?” This interesting thorough 608-page book includes 198 essays from the brightest minds.For my sake, I created a spreadsheet of all the essays and graded them from zero to five stars based on quality. Five star essays are those that provide a great description of the author's favorite scientific concept. On the other hand, those receiving a one or even a zero represent essays that were not worthy of this book. Of course, this is just one reviewer's personal opinion. I basically reprised the same formula I used to review, "This Explains Everything" and “This Will Make You Smarter”.Positives:1. This series by "The Edge" always deliver a high-quality product.2. A great topic, “What do you consider the most interesting recent (scientific) news? What makes it important?”3. A great range of scientific essays provided by subject matter experts.4. There were a number of outstanding essays deserving of five stars for me. I will list my favorites as positives in this review. In order of appearance, the first by Steven Pinker, “Human Progress Quantified”. Makes the compelling case that the world is actually getting better. “Human intuition is a notoriously poor guide to reality.”5. Richard Muller’s “The Greatest Environmental Disaster”. “Someday global warming may become the primary threat. But it is air pollution that is killing people now. Air pollution is the greatest environmental disaster in the world today.”6. Donald D. Hoffman’s “The Abdication of Spacetime”. “Nathan Seiberg, of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, said, “I am almost certain that space and time are illusions. These are primitive notions that will be replaced by something more sophisticated.”7. Seth Lloyd’s “One Hundred Years of Failure”. “Encouragingly, the advances in quantum gravity supplied by quantum-information theory do not yet seem to be counterbalanced by backsliding elsewhere.”8. Brian G. Keating’s “Looking Where the Light Isn’t”. Excellent essay. “The next century of general relativity promises to be as exciting as the first. “Spacetime tells matter how to move; matter tells spacetime how to curve,” said John Archibald Wheeler. We’ve seen what the curvature is. Now we just need to find out what’s the matter. And where better to look for lost matter than where the dark is.”9. Neil Turok’s “Simplicity”. “Such a theory won’t be concerned with kilograms, meters, or seconds, only with information and its relations. It will be a unified theory not only of all the forces and particles but also of the universe as a whole.”10. Steve Giddings’s “New Probes of Einstein’s Curved Spacetime—and Beyond?”. “The community has been abuzz about the possible discovery of a new particle at the LHC, seen by its disintegration into pairs of photons. If this is real and not just a fluctuation, there’s a slim chance it is a graviton in extra dimensions, which, if true, could well be the discovery of the century.”11. Rudy Rucker’s “The Universe Is Infinite”. “Many cosmologists now think our spatial universe is infinite.”12. Gregory Benford’s “Pluto Now, Then on to 550 AU”. “New Horizons is important not just for completing our first look at every major world in the solar system. It points outward, to a great theater in the sky, where the worlds of the galaxy itself are on display.”13. “Scott Aaronson’s “How Widely Should We Draw The Circle?” “By letting us simulate quantum physics and chemistry, quantum computers might spark a renaissance in materials science, and allow (for example) the design of higher-efficiency solar panels.”14. John Tooby’s “The Race Between Genetic Meltdown and Germline Engineering” “Natural selection is the only physical process that pushes species’ designs uphill—against entropy, toward greater order (positive selection)—or maintains our favorable genes against the downward pull exerted by mutation pressure (purifying selection).”15. Eric Topol’s “The 6 Billion Letters of Our Genome”. “So the biggest breakthrough in genomics—Science’s 2015 Breakthrough of the Year—is the ability to edit a genome, via so-called CRISPR technology, with remarkable precision and efficiency.”16. Oliver Scott Curry’s “Morality Is Made of Meat”. “Morality is natural, not supernatural. We are good because we want to be, and because we are sensitive to the opinions—the praise and the punishment—of others. We can work out for ourselves how best to promote the common good, and with the help of science make the world a better place.”21. Christian Keysers’s “Optogenetics”. “For the first time, we can selectively re-create arbitrary states in the brain—and hence the mind.”Negatives:1. At over 600 pages, it will require an investment of your time.2. Some essays were not worthy of this book. That said, the series has improved and there were very few lemons.3. Lacks visual material to complement the excellent narrative.In summary, I’m a big fan of The Edge. I enjoy essays from great minds covering a wide variety of topics and this one doesn’t disappoint. This has close to 200 essays and it never fails to be provocative and inspirational. The search for knowledge is a fun and satisfying pursuit. Ramachandran, "The Believing Brain: From Ghosts and Gods to Politics and Conspiracies" by Michael Shermer, "How to Create a Mind: The Secret of Human Thought Revealed" by Ray Kurzwell, "The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature" by Steven Pinker, "Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies" by Jared Diamond, "Why Evolution Is True" by Jerry A. Coyne, and "Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior" by Leonard Mlodinow.

Deep and interesting concepts explained in less than two pages. However, most the time you need a few (many) more pages to do a topic justice. This read more like a quick encyclopedia entry. However, sometimes the full explanation wasn't there and it was more like the author's opinion on a concept. I think the book would better if it took on less concepts (there are dozens) and let the authors take 4-10 pages so it didn't come off as a sophomoric.

A collection of very short essays - enough, in some cases, to whet your appetite - but not much depth or substance. Might be good as an introduction for people who do not follow science at all.

This is the best compilation of essays from some of the worlds most renowned scientists and researchers in the fields of science and technology I have read. If you are looking for a primer on the most current news in the physical and natural sciences, psychology and human behavior, look no further. This is a must read and the best place to start before taking a deeper dive into whatever area or discipline you’re interested in. Definitely 5 stars.
