In a world of literary scholars interpreting the meanings of the art produced by manuscript illuminators, Alexander's book is a required read that explains the practicalities of the actual process of illuminating the manuscript page. Especially useful are the chapters on instructions to the illuminator (who did less interpreting than following the directions of a copyist or compiler laying out the construction of the codex) and on the contracts that established that work that was to be completed. This is a book I've consulted over and over for years and recommended to colleagues and students.

I admit I bought this for wsomeone else as a gift, and he loved it. He said it was very beautiful and of value to medieval historians. Book describes the types of illuminations and has a lot of history.

Although I have been collecting and studying illuminated MS for decades, this book has been untouched on a shelf for many years. My need to research certain points on a French illumination probably dating between 1385 - 1420 led me to include this book in the books I reviewed. On the one relevant illustration in this book, the descriptions were so ambiguous that I was forced to make a guess as to which description pertains.Few illustrations are in color, and the resolution is poor by today's standards. If your interest lies in Romanesque works you may be satisfied with this book as it seems to over emphasise that period.

This book introduces the reader to the people and processes involved in the production of manuscripts, and is interesting as a resource for methods of book production as much as it is for the insight it gives into the lives of the very real people whose efforts and whose lives went into the production of books by hand. With more than enough information to interest the scholar, this book is at the same time extremely accesible to the average reader interested in the subject. I would reccomend this as a textbook and as a good read, but would suggest that a reader have a good guide, such as Michelle Brown's Understanding Illuminated Manuscripts on hand, in order to best understand every facet of the material being presented. The book is clear and well-written, but a deeper understanding of the finished product adds greatly to the value of reading about their creators. This is a book I am proud to have on my bookshelf, for its readability, its attractiveness, and its value as a source for interesting historical information.

Medieval Illuminators has been invaluable to my own studies and construction of illuminated manuscripts. The author presents a timeline of the history of illuminated manuscripts, their layout, methods of construction and their purpose, couched within a socio-cultural context of the eras in which the manuscripts were constructed. I found the large reproductions of key manuscripts extremely helpful in identifying the minute brush strokes of the white work, which is often difficult to discern in smaller reproductions. The enlargements also provided lovely details of designs and images that are not easily observed in non-enlarged reproductions. Lastly, I appreciated the author's discussion of the monastic book lending tradition for the purposes of copying manuscripts to expand a library's holdings on a particular subject and the inclusion of illustrations to demonstrate this practice. This is a must have for anyone pursuing the study of this literary and artistic tradition.

I own over 20 LP books. The maldives edition is less informative than its usual prints. Once you book your resort, don't really need to read the book unless you are doing some atoll-hopping.

This is a great adventure series for young teens with Greek gods in a modern world, cloning issues, and teen romance. However the violence is a bit on the strong side with vengeful anger and super powers getting out of control. Still I always loved the myth about Pegasus.I agree with others who liked it a bit better than the first book, but not quite as much as the second one. The cartoonish villains are fine for younger readers and adults looking for a light read. I also liked the well developed supporting caste of interesting characters. I didn't like Alexis at first but she grew in to likeable new version of a sphinx. (The same attention to the lead would have made this a stronger story.) Kate's creative vision of what quirky problems clones could create make this an interesting read and the plot developments have made me curious about "The Origins of Olympus" that follows. -- Diane Gronas author of Starseeker: The Flower of Tamaroon

Great book! I am eternally indebted to this author. Prior to being forced to read this book, my daughter despised reading. This author and book series has completely changed her attitude towards reading. Bought her the entire series. She did not put the books down. Read one book a day. Now she loves reading and is more open to exploring other titles and authors along same genre. For girls in her age range, this book is highly recommend.

THIS BOOK AWESOME!!!!!!It's comedy,a little bit of romance and adventure.I would recommend this book for Percy Jackson fans and for people who like Roman myth lovers but, a lot of people who don't like myths would like it to.This book is for all sorts of people.But on the inside where it talks about the author it says that she 4 of these books but,I can't find it on Amazon.If you like these books and you have never read Percy Jackson I would recommend those for you and The Heros of Olympus too.

I liked this book a lot. It had action, mythology, adventure, and friendship all wrapped in one book binding! I would recommend this book to people interested in myths, action adventure, or people just looking for a good book to read. This book had a good plot line, but sometimes I think that there was some unnecessary descriptions, but other wise I give this book a five star rating! 😎

my sister had both books on our kindle and I thought since I have nothing else to do at home y not just read her book.I was surprised to find it even more elaborate then I thought the characters are very well written and gives the most amazing story lines ever.I myself am only 14 but I read so much that I write well so in this story ideas just explode and make my brain go a million different directions (for me it's an awesome feeling).not offending any rick riordan fans (I hope) but I think that rick riordan's books are similar to these great characters,story lines,settings,and mythical twists.If your like me and love adventures with a tiny romance then both books 1 and 2 are the books to read.-from a future musician,writer,and president of United States
