While it is true that this book contained some facts of which I was unaware it is dreadfully incomplete. It is essentially a book about Goering, and fails to do more than briefly mention any other defendant. The book is also strongly biased (I am not in support of the nazis nor ANY of their twisted ideology, but when reading history I prefer to have the facts reported and not be so strongly indoctrinated with the authors opinion) For a much more complete, comprehensive, and insightful read about the nuremberg trials and their notorious defendants I would strongly suggest reading Nuremberg Diary by G.M. Gilbert, or Nuremberg Interviews by Leon Goldensohn. Both of those books are primary sources and are enlightening.

For the price, this is a decent, basic introduction to the Nuremburg Trials. It will familiarize the reader with the event, the proceedings, the personalities and the outcome. As other reviews note, there are a few gaffs, but nothing major, that I saw. The content is orderly but the sections are a bit jagged and uneven in length. Many of the passages cited of witnesses anyone well versed in Nazi history will recognize from other books or from the documentary footage of the trials. The author does not excuse Speer, does not try to make a case for him.The summation goes off the rails a bit, mentioning other war crimes trials and briefly attempting to justify the lack of such trials for American crimes in Vietnam. He is unable to remain neutral in some passages and is guilty, in my eyes, of author intrusion into the story. But for its faults, it's a quick read and will tell you what you what you need to know about the subject.

I picked up this book with low expectations. After all I have a whole shelf of books dealing with the Nuremberg Trials which are detailed and well documented in reporting the most famous trial of the twentieth century. Paul Roland s The Nuremberg Trials was cheaply printed in Great Britain, It is a book which is very readable serving as a good general introduction to the gruesome subject for those readers whose knowledge of the trials is minimal. The cover of the book is a picture of Herman Goering the head of the Luftwaffe, clown jester at the Nazi court and a cruel Anti-Semitic administrator of the Nazi program of the mass extermination of the Jews of Europe. Goering wore red nail polish and acted like a sybaritic Roman emperor in the style of the decadent Nero. He committed suicide by taking a poison capsule a few hours before he was to be executed by hanging. The trial was presided over by two judges for each of the Allied nations:" the United States, Great Britain, France and the Soviet Union. Former US Attorney General Robert Jackson did a fine job as the chief prosecutor. Many of the pages in this book are sickening to read as we hear witness accounts of atrocities in the extermination camps. I will turn to this book to refresh my memory regarding the trials held at Nuremberg from 1945 to 1949. Roland s book is a good place to begin your study of the importance of the tribunal of justice at Nuremberg.

I was barely a year old when the initial trials convened in Nuremberg. I was older but only slightly wiser when Judgment at Nuremberg premiered. I was an adult flying protective sorties against our former ally, Soviet Russia during the Cold War. But only as a septuagenarian visiting Nuremberg just a few months ago did I finally appreciated and finally comprehend the ghastly dichotomy of this now pleasant city in southern Germany. Not far from Zeppelin Field and the infamous Nazi Stadium, the courts where the momentous trials, so well recorded and documented in this book, finally came into sharp focus and entered their proper place in historyThis Nuremberg Trials book helped to put these heroic legal efforts into proper perspective and made me realize why we refer to our fathers and mothers as members of the greatest generation...perhaps the most courageous, too.The book is definitely worth reading and the reflection it generates should remind us of George Santayana's words.

For anyone interested in the fate of the various Nazi war criminals after WWII, this book is an excellent overview. It's laid out well - it starts with details about how the trials came to fruition, who the judges were, and how the Allied powers worked together. It discusses the debate between trying the Nazis versus execution without trial. It details all of the Nazis who were tried in the first round of Nuremberg trials, what their roles were, and how they interacted with the judges, the prison psychologist, and each other. It also summarizes their sentences, the rationale for their sentences, and their reactions to their sentences. At the end, there are summaries of other trials that took place in Nuremberg but that were not as famous as the first trials (where Goering was tried). The Nuremberg Trials were lengthy and detailed; the author notes in this book how many of the prosecution and defense's arguments would go on for hours at a time. I was worried that the book would get bogged down with tedious trial details, but it did not.The only complaint I have about this book is that I found it hard to recall who some of the leaders were. I was familiar with Goering and several other defendants going into this book, but I had not heard of many of the others. Toward the beginning of the book, the author lists all of the defendants and what they are accused of; I recommend bookmarking these brief summaries for the people who you are unfamiliar with, so that you can reference them later. This is a great value for a Kindle book as well. Definitely a worthwhile and quick read.

Dana Marton has surprised me yet again. After Forced Disappearance, I thought I knew what to expect from her, but instead Flash Fire kept me guessing every step of the way, in turns intensely action-packed, filled with danger, and hilariously funny. I'm not even certain if Ms Marton intended this to be a funny book but there are so many parts of the story that tickled my funny bone just right. There were some excellent laugh out loud moments that were very memorable. It's not comedy, slapstick funny, but funny in keeping with the high adrenalin story. Perhaps Ms Marton intended the funny bits to tone down the intensely dangerous situation Walker and Clara were in?"No matter what her father wanted, no way was Clara going to partner up with Light Walker. He’d suggested a tarantula for a snack, for heaven’s sake."Walker might just be the most badass hero I have ever met. He's utterly ruthless and unapologetic about his behaviour and he's a complete guy's guy."The shorts had been a bad idea, he could tell that right then and there. They were a light material, red, an inch-long lace edging the hems. Combined with cowboy boots, they created an interesting effect. In his pants. "But he's also funny while being a guy's guy."The thought of her long legs wrapped around his waist definitely held appeal. Except, while he was contemplating talking her out of her pants, the look in her eyes said she was contemplating shooting him. ""She must have had an odd expression on her face, because he said, “Hey, don’t look so scared. C4 is actually pretty stable. You could juggle with it and nothing would happen.” He probably did juggle explosives. Sweet Jungle Jesus. "And he's kind and compassionate even though those finer qualities are buried deep down within him and he keeps a lid on it. On a black and white scale, Walker is all shades of grey but mostly bordering on black. He's an awesome hero and exactly the kind of guy you want by your side in a dangerous and difficult situation, but I don't think he's life partner material as he is. Fortunately, as he gets to know Clara, she helps him rediscover his finer qualities and she makes him want to be a better man. Kudos to Clara for accepting Walker as he is and trying to change him. Walker lives by his own code of right and wrong, and I loved he does figure out what's right, what's wrong and what's worth living for."It was down to her and Walker. Loose cannon Walker. No allegiance Walker. Cares about nothing but his own agenda Walker."I like Clara. She's strong, brave and tenacious as hell. Kind of like a dog with a bone. She just doesn't let go."She was no GI Jane by any means, but there was a doggedness about her that was beginning to worry him. She might be a rookie investigator, but so far she’d stood up to everything he’d thrown at her. He was beginning to have a dreadful suspicion that she might be more difficult to get rid of than he had first anticipated."Thrust in a situation she neither understands nor can she get out of without help, Clara is tough and resilient. She's also somewhat naive until Walker opens her eyes to the reality of the situation she is in.This story was one hell of a ride from start to finish even though at the start, the situation surrounding Clara being asked to go on this particular recovery assignment was a little distasteful, but it all comes full circle at the end. All is not what it seems.I'm really impressed with Ms Marton's writing and storytelling and I'm looking forward to the next book.

In my opinion, this is the best Dana Marton romantic suspense yet. It's no wonder that it's a 2016 RITA Award Winner. As the second book in the Civilian Personnel Recovery Unit, it is also a great standalone with an HEA. I absolutely loved it, as I did book one, and can't wait for the next book in the series.Light Walker is a man obsessed. A former Navy SEAL, he now works as a mercenary in Mexico, with a long game of finding and killing the man who murdered his younger brother, Ben. The DOD did him a favor along the way, however, and they've just called it in.Former forensic accountant Clara Roberts is a DOD Civilian Personnel Recovery Unit Investigator finishing up a job in Mexico when she gets a call from her father, retired General Roberts, the head of the CPRU. He tasks her with another recovery, this one off the books. After telling her who and why, Clara is shaken, but on board. There won't be an official liaison, though, so her father arranges for a private one. But when he's three days late for their rendezvous, Clara decides to proceed without him. Which is why Walker finds her in the local cantina being strong armed by Pedro, the corrupt human trafficking head of the local police. After Walker permanently takes care of Pedro, they escape into the jungle, running from Pedro's men, and Walker begins his campaign of 'encouraging' Clara to go home. But Clara is tougher than she looks and she's determined she's not leaving Mexico without her target. Walker's game is in play, though, and if he can't get her to leave, he'll have to find a way to keep her alive.

Dana Martin gives us a dark and vengeful hero in this latest in the Civilian Personnel Recovery Unit series.I didnt quite know what to make of Light Walker when we first meet him. He is one angry dude out to avenge the death of his younger brother. He left the SEALs and is now a mercenary for hire who doesnt think twice about killing.Clara Roberts typically found and retrieved US citizens and got them back home whether alive or dead. She's about to take a leave from her job to go and help her father through his chemo when instead he sends her on a mission into Mexico to find a missing young woman. Her father asks Walker to be her guide and muscle to help. The two embark on a harrowing trek through the Mexican jungle running from banditos and the deadly wildlife of the jungle.Walker goes through quite the transformation through out the book. He's lived for so long looking for the man that killed his brother and killing any bad guys in the way he figured he didnt have a heart left. Clara surprisingly makes his dead heart start beating again and he has to decide what's more important – his need for revenge and not caring about anything or to come back to being a human being that cares about someone.

I really enjoyed reading Flash Fire. Claire is the type of heroine I like, unshakeable, logical, with vulnerability. Walker is the type of hero I like, tough, Alpha, with a buried conscience. The vendetta Walker was on made sense and definitely moved the story forward. And Claire's mission was also well motivated.I had to really suspend my disbelief when Claire's only thought was bringing her Glock to Brunhilda. Although I realize being who she was, organized and frugal, she wanted the gun to go to Walker, but since she was trying to get out of the country, she simply could have hidden it and left. And then, the entire reason why SHE had to be the one to rescue Rosita should have been addressed. Ms. Marton should have written the scene where Claire and her father talked and she revealed what Rosita had told her. It would have also been nice to learn what the outcome was to Rosita's cousin and aunt. It was a major piece of the plot.Otherwise, it was a fun ride.

There are 18 delightful examples of her work, each one presented in step by step format, with very detailed instruction, but there's also a personal narration that lets you follow her thought process and decide for yourself to keep following her or to start branching off on your own version of the project. My immediate favorites were Dreamy Summer Garden: It was easy to take inspiration from her lovely. loose first-step painting of red flowers and green stems, then go my own way. Second favorite: the abstract house - a completely different take on ink drawing w/paint for me. I've always done the ink drawing first, then add the color. She starts with a composition of painted blocks of color, then inks a picture from what her imagination sees in the colors and composition. It made me a reconsider a few things I've been working on!It's a happy and fun book by a serious but not stodgy artist.

Love the premise of this book. I've skipped around and have enjoyed everything that I've read.

What not to love.

Behold the Beauty of the Lord: Praying With Icons, by Henri J. M. Nouwen

Review

Henri J. M. Nouwen, who wrote more than 40 books, remains one of the most popular spiritual writers of our time. This paperback is a revised version of a volume released in 1987.We are assaulted by images in a society where consumerism comes at us through posters, billboards, television, movies and store windows. But icons are a different thing completely. Nouwen presents meditations on four icons: the icon of the Holy Trinity, the icon of the Virgin of Vladimir, the icon of the Savior of Zvenigorod, and the icon of the Descent of the Spirit:"By giving the icons long and prayerful attention talking about them, reading about them, but mostly just gazing at them in silence I have gradually come to know them by heart. I see them now whether they are physically present or not. I have memorized them as I have memorized the Our Father and the Hail Mary, and I pray with them wherever I go."Icons are a part of the sacred liturgy of the Eastern Orthodox Church and are used in worship services. Nouwen points out that they do not excite our outer senses but speak to our heart. Those who gaze at icons as a spiritual practice believe they draw closer to God in the process. Nouwen presents substantive spiritual analysis of the icon of the Holy Trinity, which he sees as a pathway into the Mystery of God's self-revelation. The icon of the Virgin of Vladimir is an invitation to enter the divine milieu with gratitude and joy. Nouwen sees in the eyes of the icon of the Savior of Zvenigorod a revelation about the mystery of the Incarnation. And, finally, in the icon of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, he feels a celebration of the power and meaning of community. Nouwen concludes:"Working on these meditations has been a great delight. Praying became writing and writing became praying. More energy was granted than consumed in the process. I fervently hope that you who read these meditations will experience some of this same delight, and thus deepen your desire to behold the beauty of the Lord expressed in these holy images." --Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, spiritualityandpractice.com

I will echo many reviews here: this book is a fantastic window into the world of icons and their functions. While giving a little history of each of the four icons he uses to illustrate his points, Nouwen spends a lot of time explaining how he came to see different theological and spiritual truths within the icons. Praying with (not to) the icons provides a different medium for prayer that is bound to be helpful for those that try. This book cannot be recommended enough, and a huge benefit is that the language is clear, concise, and to the point. This is not like other heady religious books.

I've never read anything by Nouwen that I didn't like. I have been to Eastern Europe several times, and each time, tried to purchase an icon or some religious artifact to remember my trip by. I had seen Orthodox Christians praying with Icons (not praying to, mind you...praying with), and wanted a better understanding of the practice. Nouwen writes that they are to be used like windows into heaven, not as base objects to be worshiped. Nouwen actually takes several icons and explains the meaning behind them (such as the empty space at the table in Rublev's "Trinity") in order to help the reader learn to focus on certain aspects of faith. Offers clarity to the practice of praying with icons. A good companion piece to Linette Martin's "Sacred Doorways".

Love this book re how to pray with icons... but was disappointed with this new publication format... The original was much more expressive of the purpose of Nouwen's book...

While I have strongly differing opinions on the icons he reviews, Nouwen is always worth reading. In the case of the Trinity icon he lets his political views slip through.

The title says it all. Understanding the icon in order to further one’s relationship with the Lord.

This is a beautiful book to read if you have an interest in the beautiful icons and the meaning behind them. Perhaps you have seen these icons in Catholic and Orthodox churches here and abroad, icons are a Liturgical Art, and have significant meaning behind each step in the painting process. The author has done a beautiful job of explaining the meaning as he sees it with each of five icons. It is a beautiful book to own.

Exactly that for which I was looking; a small yet mighty book by a favorite author on a subject of great interest. This is well thought out, the icon's researched, studied and as understanding and spiritual insights were expanded, adimiration grew and the icons became treasured and loved. The author shared his inspiration and explanations with warmth, wisdom and clarity.

Fabulous book but beware the color version of the 4 icons are in the book right after the cover and are not specified in the Table of Contents. The chapter versions are in black and white which are NOT helpful for the full experience.

Tom Shales and James Andrew Miller wrote one of my favorite TV books ever, Live From New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live, as Told By Its Stars, Writers and Guests. That book, a huge compilation of interviews with dozens of people tied to SNL did a great job of detailing the creation, development, constant reinvention, and gossip behind one of our most beloved (and at times, reviled) shows.Unfortunately, Shales and Miller's technique falls flat when it comes to the history of ESPN. The problem is that ESPN doesn't really provide its own established narrative for the reader (and Shales and Miller, I would imagine) to fall back on. While ESPN certainly has aired several memorable sporting events, to most viewers, the events themselves are of importance, not the personalities and stories behind them. While the behind the scenes gossip from some of ESPN's most well known personalities, such as Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann are interesting, and often fun, the book often feels more like rehashing of contract negotiations and business dealings than a trip through ESPN history. Once the book gets past building the foundations of the network and its early days (which are truly the best part of the book), it seems like an endless stream of narratives about not much tied together by even less. The book is begging for a narrative that the interviews presented do not really provide. Most puzzling is that a book about a sports network provides so few anecdotes about specific moments in sports or from sports personalities. Perhaps this is because, while ESPN has covered its fair share of sports news, it seldom has carried the biggest events. Or perhaps it is because Shales and Miller intended the book to focus solely on the business and network itself without the context of the sporting events that shaped it. Unfortunately, this is a bit like writing a book about SNL without mentioning skits or guest stars. If you're a fan of the network, you probably should pick up the book. But if you're just a casual sports fan who only watches ESPN when your team is on, you're going to find the book a slog. Shales and Miller seemed to have a hard time figuring out what they wanted to do with the book, and as a result, it's a major disappointment.

I've been watching ESPN for 25 years and remember those early days when they were so much more understated than "The Worldwide Leader" we know today. I wanted to get the juicy details and find out how this business evolved from far-fetched start-up featuring Aussie Rules football and lumberjack competitions to THE sports authority across the globe. The authors only occasionally interject their own material, relying instead on recollections from seemingly everyone who ever worked at ESPN. This structure bothered me at first, as I didn't want to just read people telling stories about their experiences, but I came to love it after a while, because the cast of colorful characters -- often at odds with one another, especially in the early days -- are some of the most electrifying personalities I've ever read about. It's amazing ESPN got going and survived. In fact, I found the first part of the book the most compelling. What it takes to start a venture like ESPN is almost unfathomable, and I love against-all-odds success stories. Broadcasts without any sound, wrangling for the rights to sporting events no one else wanted, a few female employees turning tricks in a NY hotel room (!), Machiavellian internal politics, nail biter financial daring... this story has it all.I do question some of the editing and focus of the stories -- sometimes the authors tired me with endless tales of one subject (Tony Kornheiser not working out on Monday Night Football) and not enough details about others (the untimely death of Tom Mees). And the last 10% of the book wore on my nerves -- I just got tired of the self-congratulatory storytelling by that point. It's too long, but it's still an absorbing read. I was also inspired by the work ethic and commitment of the people who made ESPN tick. For all their pros and cons, they're some of the most talented, hard working, driven, creative people you'll ever read about, and their stories made me reflect on my own professional commitments. It may take a while to get through, and there are some boring parts, but this is very much a worthwhile read.

This is an excellent historical narrative about ESPN and its beginnings. There is a concentration on the main group of principals whocreated and nurtured the network from its earliest days, and a behind-the-scenes descriptive account of who financed and supported the fledging network in the late 1970's & early 1980's. Then, from the boardroom and the control rooms, the book starts to interview personalities and talent. Every famous anchor & co-anchor was interviewed and offered a unique perspective about their tenure there or the atmosphere there during their time there. An interesting book that mainly deals with the beginning of the network and gradually moves into the present day. I recommend it to anyone interested in ESPN or network television.

There are some great tidbits in between lots of rambling uninteresting sections. It took me a few years to finish this because it was somewhat disjointed and boring at parts. I haven't read my oral histories, so maybe that is par for the course. Personally, I would have preferred to read more about the business challenges and their approach to innovation/R&D, and less about internal culture dynamics and employee discipline. ESPN.com and ESPN3/360 are also only mentioned in passing, even though this book was just published in December, 2011.
