This is THE HIKING BOOK for San Diego county-- it is absolutely incredible! I have other hiking books for places in the area, but none of them are so thorough and detailed. There are 39 different chapters, organized according to areas, for example, there are more than a dozen chapters devoted to the massive Anza Borrego desert, one of my favorite places to explore. In addition to great parks like Anza, there are hike descriptions for all the coastal areas, like bays and beaches, and lots of chapters on mountain hikes like Palomar and the Laguna mountains. The hikes range from easy day hikes suitable for kids to long backpacking treks into the wilderness-- there are hikes for all different levels and interests. Every hike (and there are 282 in the book!) contains all the stats like mileage and hiking time and trail difficulty, but the best aspect of the book, in my opinion, is how well written and descriptive all of the hikes are! Scott Turner does an amazing job, throughout the book, of writing engaging and beautiful descriptions, complete with photos, of the lovely landscapes and wildlife that you will encounter on your hikes. As soon as I got my copy, I began poring over the chapters and totally lost track of time because the book is so engaging and fun to read-- hours later, and many post-its later, I have a long list of new adventures-- many of them are places right here in my backyard that I never even knew existed! There are also helpful charts in the beginning of the book that break down the hikes by difficulty, elevation gain, etc. and let readers know if dogs or mountain bikes are allowed on the trails-- this is excellent, as I have a new bike and am excited to find some good spots to ride. I brought the book with me to Anza Borrego this week, during the wildflower season, and discovered some new places and hikes that are now some of my favorites (Coyote Canyon-- never seen so many flowers in my life!). It will take me YEARS to get through even a small portion of the many beautiful hikes included in this book. Jerry Schad, who produced the original version of this book, would be so thrilled and impressed with this revised edition-- no one could have done it better than Scott Turner! This is, as the Los Angeles Times has called it, the Bible of San Diego hiking. If you live here or are taking a trip to explore the outdoors in San Diego county, you definitely want this one in your backpack!

My SO is very outdoorsy, and I'm... kind of outdoorsy? I got this as an anniversary gift for him to use when we go on hiking dates.There is plenty of information in here, I love that there are directions to the hikes, helpful tips, elevations, "good for kids/pets" etc.My only complaint is that it doesn't list if there are restroom facilities available. You're probably thinking "but, you're out in nature! Pop a squat behind a bush!"... well, some places are very crowded, and some don't have vegetation to hide behind... I have a digestive disorder and it would be really helpful if I knew there was a bathroom where I'm going beforehand so I can try to plan and pack accordingly.

An incredible update to an incredible book. It's clear a ton of time and energy went into re-hiking every trail. Love the variety of photos, as well as the specific details provided about each hike. Even though people think the weather in San Diego is perfect year round, this book gives great guidance for what time of year is optimal for any given hike... and when it might be too hot or dangerous. Love that options are given for the hard core hikers, as well as those of us who are more casual enthusiasts. A true asset for anyone living in San Diego.

Fantastic addition to my collection of "things to do in San Diego." This book is THOROUGH, and I can't imagine even one trail was left out. The assessment of skill level and terrain is right on the money. I often bring my dog along, so I appreciate the guides suggestions about which hikes work for our canine friends as well. I look forward to enjoying trails around my world for years to come.

There are plenty of hiking books and websites that focus on San Diego, but this is by far the most comprehensive and user friendly. I love the detailed information about how to reach the trailhead, what to expect during the hike, and what the payoff is. If you’re new to hiking or just new to San Diego, this is the best resource you can pick up!

It's nice to get an updated edition of this major trail reference. Generally the in-text maps contained in Wilderness Press books are very good. Unfortunately I was very disappointed with the map quality in the 2017 edition. Poor choices were made for the line symbols; paved roads and trails are both depicted as solid gray lines, making it difficult for the user to differentiate between the two types.

Alcoholic Pass trail, 2 AM on a clear moonless night, miles from any other person, where you can see the light of the Milky Way reflected on snow capped Peaks, howl with Coyotes, beat your Shaman's drum and journey through time as the Space Station passes overhead through silver streaks of "falling stars." What is there not to like. Thanks You Jerry Shad. I would have missed this hike if not for you.

It's a concise book that is a great reminder of things you may have been taught long ago, or perhaps were doing unconsciously- if you're lucky. Some tips I definitely feel like most people do not know, including answering questions with information that leads to a dead end. If you're socially awkward, you definitely want to read this, it breaks down what to do (AND not do, which I appreciated) very specifically. I'm outgoing and feel comfortable navigating a party of strangers, but this has explained how to skip some awkward conversations that I definitely have had and do not want to have again!

This review is just for the Kindle book. It was scanned in badly and has so many spelling errors in it that it's completely unreadable. It has at least one spelling error per sentence. I'm stuck with it since there's no possibility of a refund, but learn from my mistake!

I struggle with talking to others; specifically: talking to those who don't know me well, or share my interests. (Which is most of whom I find myself speaking to) To me, many of the tips in the book feel like common sense, but are things I fail to do nonetheless. They are things I have to see in writing, usually provided with subtleties that I didn't consider. The most valuable tips for somebody like myself are those in the first half of the book. Later on, they begin to be more business related, but I can still see their value, despite currently being in college.The book gets five stars from me because it provides tons of valuable advice; in addition, Leil keeps it interesting by giving personal examples and stories alongside her tricks. I fully intend to come back to this book to help make these tricks habit. After a full read, it becomes a guide, you'll look back at conversations and realize what tricks you used, or failed to use.

Why does it seem like every time I turn the page, the author is invited to another "exclusive" dinner or party? Why is this always the tone you use to set the stage? How is this going to allow us as readers to find her relatable? Also, the subtle name dropping of "my very successful friend who works on Wall Street for a very successful investment firm who does charity work for blah blah blah" detracts from the main messages of the book: learning how to talk to people. I don't care about who you're friends with, Leil.These messages (which are quite useful! and I've employed several with great success!) are the main point of the book, and would be more effectively conveyed if the author had stopped trying to impress us with everyone she supposedly is bffs with. If you ask me, she needs to do some research on how to become more approachable/likeable, for which her current skills are bland at best.

What an awesome book!!! It should be a must-read for every High-school graduating person. In addition, I believe every businessman can benefit from it. I did, and I am an experienced Entrepreneur. A bit difficult to rate.In one side Leil writing is witty and filled with anecdotes to deliver her pointsOn the other side the tricks offered feel like too much. Some of then would drive people crazy overthinking, and her funny stories get annoying when she involves stereotypes and genders. And that leads to a boring book. Moreover many of her chapters are about how to MAKE people think believe or act in certain ways and that is merely manipulative.

I was desperate, but skeptical when I ordered this book. Ever since becoming a member of an editorial team at my high school, I've encountered countless moments when I JUST can't seem to communicate on a personal level with the rest of the staff members, who were all a grade above me.Yes. I felt timid every time I spoke to the editors, and despite how much I wanted to talk to them, I couldn't even make it past a thirty second conversation. And after I accidentally goofed on our FIRST release? Oh god none of them even bothered to talk to me after that... And I felt way too threatened to try to start a conversation. So the result was this: I suffered from becoming the social outcast because of a pretty bad first impression.....After reading the book, I understood why.1) I abused the Quick-smiles that were mentioned as shallow in the first chapter. I would flash a smile that immediately disappear after three seconds (or less). I'm now working on the "flowing smile" technique :D :)2) I simply had 0 skills in making small conversations. Usually the small talks end with me or the listener just running off with a "Oh I've gotta go now"3) It was my specialty to ask overly obvious questions and make the most awkward comments at the worst times.....4) The "instant history" technique was something I never used despite the various circumstances I catch myself in.5) I fidgeted a lot and gave embarrassed smiles when I wasn't feeling embarrassed.6) technique #88, "my goof your gain" was something I really should have used to ease the tension.....well darn it. I'll just keep trying with this book's help. :D

Rivers spent two decades gathering information about the Spanish treatment of blacks, and because of his research, he differentiates slavery in Florida from slavery in the other southern states. He traces the presence of Africans in Florida from Spain's early attempts to build an American empire, long before the institution of slavery was introduced. The impact of Spanish treatment was such that blacks, even under slavery, enjoyed more freedom, more interracial mixing, and broader acceptance of that mixing than they did under the hands of the British and southern Anglo culture. Rivers also examines the Seminole wars' effects on slavery in Florida and the presence in Florida of armed black slaves and ex-slaves, because the state was a haven for runaway slaves from Georgia and the Carolinas. The greater social and economic freedom born of Spanish influence and close relationships between rebellious blacks and Seminoles set the stage for the largest slave rebellion in U.S. history. An excellent study of slavery in Florida, from the early days of the colonies to the 1865 Emancipation. If you are a living historian in Florida for that period, as I am, you should read this book to enhance your first and third person historical impressions.If your interest is slavery in general in America during that period, this book details how slavery in Florida was the same as, and also very different, from other states.I would elaborate, but other reviews on Amazon better state the excellence of this study.

I found this book, Slavery In Florida: Territorial Days To Emancipation, to be a deeply researched, beautifully written, and well grounded book on the peculiar institution in Florida from 1821 to 1865. This study presents the story of slavery from both the perspective of the bond servant and the master. The book covers every aspect of slavery in Florida. Among the chapters are those that focus on the slave family, religion and community, physical treatment of bond servants, slave resistance, and the participation of enslaved blacks in the Civil War. Rivers presents an engaging analysis of race relations during the territorial and statehood periods in Florida. Particulary, he discusses the relationship between enslaved blacks, Native Americans, and whites in an even-handed yet critical manner.Readers will find the voices of slave men, women, and children throughout this study. Rivers used the Federal Writers Project WPA interviews of former slaves as well as other newspaper interviews with former bond servants to described "what slavery was like" in Florida from the viewpoint of the enslaved black. From the extensive endnotes, the author apparently used hundreds if not thousands of probate records, appraisals, and inventories to describe the slave family. Given the cruelty of slavery, Rivers argues that enslaved blacks were still able to carve out some semblance of family, connected with generations of kinfolk. Rivers presents convincing evidence that bond servants were far from being passive victims. They were sometimes successful in getting concessions from masters concerning family matters, work routines, and religious worship.Some readers might find insightful Rivers' suggestion that the largest slave rebellion in the antebellum South was not the Nat Turner insurrection, but the Second Seminole War (1835-1842), where the majority of the warriors consisted of runaway slaves from Florida and state to the north. I found this refreshing since most studies paint all whites as the bad guys and all blacks without a blemish.Anyone knowledgeable of the historiography of the antebellum South will quickly notice that Rivers includes the latest scholarship on slavery. As an avid reader of books on slavery, this is, in fact, one of the best books I have read on the topic in years. It should serve as a model for other state studies. I hope someone will read Rivers' book and use it as a guide to do a study of antebellum slavery in my state of Delaware (which has yet to be done). Slavery In Florida is a gripping read, and I give it five stars.
