The book One You Cannot Have by Preeti Shenoy is neither interesting nor informative. It is perhaps an improvised version of her blog! She just has her undeveloped, unrealistic and out-of-place characters drifting throughout the book. The story does not have flow. There does not seem to be any logic about why her characters behave the way they do except because the author wants them to do it! The clothes they wear, places they go, the way they think is totally out of place for Indian setting - whether elite or middle class. I think she herself wasn't sure where she wanted to place them. They wear designer clothes, think like elite and travel in an autorikshaw!Although her Shruti has done nothing spectacular, she is remembered by the chief guest who later helps her. Her behavior in every situation is so strange that one really wonders what makes her tick! Deepika, her husband and their daughters - why do they do what they do?The only good thing about the book is that it is short.

I enjoyed reading this book because it lets you get into the thoughts of the main characters and therefore understand their attitudes towards certain situations. I also like reading books of different cultures. So far the stories that I've read that are based in India and other countries I have found to be very interesting. This book was very easy to read. I would certainly recommend it.

Finished it! In four hours! It's a short book, and a good read. My rating 3/5. And here's the review of Preeti Shenoy's book 'The one you cannot have' :The main theme of the book is 'Everyone will always have the one you cannot have.' The author conveyed her point well. The book talks about acceptance of your past and moving on. The plot is a no-brainer. Anyone can guess it from the title. Aman, a north indian, and Shruthi, a south indian, are star-crossed lovers. After four years of togetherness, they believe that nothing is going to stop them from getting married. However, fate interferes in a cruel way and Shruti is married to a another guy, Rishabh, from her own community. Even after two years, Aman and Shruti struggle with the ghosts of their pasts. It affects Shruti's marital life and Aman finds it difficult to commit himself into another relationship. How they found acceptance of their past and moved on is the rest of the story. The story moves at a brisk pace. The shifting of perspectives at the beginning of each chapter, a technique every author is employing these days, helped me understand them well. The characters of Shruti and Aman are excellently developed. Their love truly appeared magical. Until the last page, I hoped they would get together again, and once again the magic would happen. I particularly like Shruti's narration. I would often find myself skipping Anjali's part. It's not that her part was boring, but Shruti's was interesting.Moving on, there are loose ends in the story. Like the story of Vikram and Dipika. What happened to them? And why did the author introduce the subplot in the story when she didn't want to give it a proper closure? Is Dipika's character introduced to show us how bitter marriages can become and how it would drive the women to extremes? The other complaint I have is that the author drilled into reader's mind that marriages become boring after some years. She should have shown atleast one happy couple. It's a pretty depressing thought.I felt that the ending was abrupt. How did Shruti and Rishabh reconcile? I know she wrote an epilogue, but I felt it was insufficient since we invested so much time on them. The major complaint I have is why are mothers always shown as pestering? About baby, marriage or otherwise? The author tried to show it as affection, but frankly it was repetitive.Well, those are some of my thoughts. If you want to read a good story of acceptance and moving on, without worrying about the fate of other characters, then this is the book. I would have given it 4 stars if the story was a bit more well developed without loose ends.Divya,http://divyalavanya.blogspot.in

I have read most of Preeti Shenoy's novels and this one is probably one of the worst. Reading her novels, one gets the impression that relationship between man and woman is all about sex, and there is high probability of having sex every time every other man or woman meets. Plot in all her novels are the same - two characters in love, then break-up, then add few more characters, there will be love and sex between characters in all permutations and combinations, and finally a happy ending. I have given one star rating since a lot of time is spent in writing this, and a lot of time spent on reading this as well.

It is a typical Preeti Shenoy story with a little twist in the end. However it appears pretty straightforward with nothing very outstanding like in some of her other novels.

“For words once uttered find their way into hearts and later spill over to paper in the form of poetry. Immortalized forever. Perhaps this is what they call love.”I have to say that this book is an unconventional pick for me. I normally don’t read a lot in this genre, outside of the occasional Chetan Bhagat book, which is also rare these days. But I was out of books, and a trip to the bookstore or library meant battling snow, so I settled in with this one. I was looking for a light, quick read over the weekend, and this book fit the bill. This is the very first Preeti Shenoy book that I have read, so, went in with no expectations. This story reminds me of the following quote: “There are things that we don’t want to happen but have to accept, things we don’t want to know but have to learn and people we can’t live without but have to let go.”The book is a total page-turner. I liked the shifting of perspectives at the beginning of every chapter, and the characters, the life situations, and their decisions are very real and relatable. In-spite of the alternating narration, the author does not deviate from the plot. A large part of my enjoyment came from not being able to tell for sure how it would all end (yes, in-spite of the title).Read the full review @ http://shanayatales.com/the-one-you-cannot-have-by-preeti-shenoy-book-review/

Almost $35 for a book smaller than a novel. No wonder education is so expensive. Those who make so called educational books overcharge students. Greed!

Bought this book for a class I'm taking - excellent content, easy to read and follow.

I get a lot of great information from this book.

What a waste of paper. Everything in this book is either common sense or available more easily, quickly and in a more up-to-date state than in this format. If your professor assigns this as required reading, don't bother. You will learn nothing new from this book.

Muy buen libro!

This people did a good job!!!

excellent piece of journalism literature. Just practical and timely!

Weber quips that a journalist is a writer looking for a story and that is never more evident than here. I loved his book on baseball umpires. It had what this book lacks, a real sense of risk, of doing something completely out of the ordinary, of throwing oneself into a strange new world. This book is an account of Weber's second transcontinental crossing and along the way he compares his present journey to that of his past, as well as an extended bicycle trip across Vietnam two decades prior. (He also spends far too many pages recalling his childhood, analyzing his current romantic relationship, and generally telling us more about his personal life than I'd care to know.) On this trip he stays in hotels, eats in restaurants, and in his off hours blogs about his trip. He meets a handful of friends along the way who put him up and take him out. He even leaves the road for a funeral and later a wedding. It never feels like anything is at stake on this journey, that it's simply a book idea and a way to pass the time. More interesting challenges might have been to camp the entire route, or to have cycled across China or India or South America, or to have ridden for a time record (for his age), or to have traveled with no credit card or phone and depended entirely on the information and good will of those he met along the way. What we get instead is an account of a three-month lark on a bicycle. Weber is a great writer, but this is unfortunately not a great story.

You never quite know what to expect when you open up a book about touring the U.S. on a bike. Some spend most of their time describing the details of the ride, which we bikers enjoy. Others inject a good bit of humor. My favorite part of the book were Weber's descriptions of traveling through eastern Washington and Montana. Having lived near Missoula, MT, for a number of years, I enjoyed following his trip up the Going to the Sun Road and the sameness of eastern Montana. I confess to skimming certain portions--his descriptions of his relationship with Catherine; his mother's eulogy; crying the night before his heart surgery--but 90% of the book was a real pleasure. I enjoy his writing so much, and share his love of baseball, so I've ordered his "As They See 'Em." Looking forward to it.

Bruce Weber keeps the narrative spinning with his insights and events on his cross country bike ride. I was engrossed all the way -- and found especially interesting the comparison between this ride and his previous bike odyssey two decades before - the differences in the country and his own perspective. If this is a mid-life crisis, it is such a positive one -- as the author falls in love and has epiphanies along the way. Especially poignant is his farewell to a good friend whose death propels him to store the bike for a day to attend the funeral and give a moving eulogy. I found the rides through the barren and industrial sections just as engrossing as his tour of scenic wonders. I am in awe as the author catches up and overtakes the challenges of approaching 60. Recommended reading - and riding. His journey made me want to dust off my bike, brave all difficulties to face my own possibilities for adventure and reflection.

What a great read. I felt I was riding along with Weber, especially in the first half of the book. (Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana are so familiar to me that I knew every road and town on his route until he entered North Dakota). I applaud his motives, his effort and his writing. I loved his view of the terrain, the changing weather and the people he encountered, his passing thoughts on life, death, friendship and love. He has a journalist's eye, coupled with a memoirist's introspective point of view--at times self-deprecating (or at least very honest and modest), and always a bit humorous-engaging. This is a travel story, an interior meditation, a reminiscence, an adventure of a very personal sort that will take you along for the ride.

When the book arrived in the mail I had forgotten why I had ordered it. I am not a cyclist or even a sports enthusiast. Maybe it was because the author was an obituary writer. In any event, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and in particular his discussions about what motivated him at age 57 to take another cross-country bike trip. I am terribly curious about why anybody takes on such challenges, and especially where, as in the case of Mr. Weber, the actor has nothing to prove -- he had already done it once in addition to numerous other long-distance rides. Well written and easy to read. It has made me think about my own life's narrative as well as inspiring me to consider tackling some of my own challenges I have tended to deny.

Bruce is a good story teller and gives a great description of the real America hidden behind the headlines in "fly over country". as a fellow bicyclist of advancing years I feel both his pain and adulation as he crests forbidding hills and avoids the pot holes and fumes of today's motorized society. As a city dweller he knows how to ask the questions we all have of the folk who till the soil and harvest our food. He readily accepts the advice and hospitality from strangers (not that common among urban folk).I shall be sorry when he reaches his final stop and trades his bike and spandex for a suit and tie.

I really, really enjoyed this book and I always looked forward to reading the next chapter. Weber is a terrific writer, and brings a lot of American characters he met to life (the forlorn McDonald's manager who gave him a free apple pie when he learned Weber was cycling across the country). He also does a great job of describing the country he sees (two weeks to bike across Montana!). He also contrasts his political positions and life experiences with people he meets along the way. A really fine book.

I picked up this book and was not sure what to think having read nothing about it in advance. It's a great book. I like the author's writing style. He gives lots of background; and is not afraid to be honest about himself and his feelings. He wasn't trying to break a record or prove anything. It was just a goal and he did it; his way and I think he had a lot of fun doing it. Mahalo for taking the time to write about your experience is what I would say to Mr. Weber if I ever meet him.
