This story is compelling and at times the narative and descriptions are entertaining, but there are some jolts such as when the reader learns Nikki's parents were killed when she was a child and left her with so much guilt. Gag me. I groaned again when Nikki surrendered to bad guys rather than shoot them when she had them out gunned, simply because they showed a picture of her brother. The dialogue in the fight scenes was sometimes unrealistic. The quality is not up to the $14.99 price of a Kindle edition if compared to Lee Child, John Sanford or Michael Connelly.
Every once in a while, I encounter a book that I want to digest slowly. Not skimming, not racing through - just absorbing and enjoying every word and sentence.This is one of those books! The writing is impeccable and enveloping.It is action-packed, exciting, and engrossing. I really felt invited into Nikki’s interesting world and was so happy to finally read a novel with a strong and courageous female protagonist.As a woman, I have been disappointed with the dearth of powerful “I don’t give a dang†female characters. All we have is literature like “Sex and the City†and “Eat, Pray, Love,†where the main characters need to rely on constant male validation for success.This is NOT one of those familiar tales! Nikki Griffin is a worldly, smart, and physically tough woman who is fighting injustice and unraveling conspiracies at the highest level.I look forward to the next installment in the Nikki Griffin saga!
I read the whole thing in two days and found myself gasping out loud at certain points. Such a page turner! I also love that it’s set in the Bay Area. So many cool descriptions of Berkeley, Oakland, Mendocino and Silicon Valley.I’m already looking forward to the sequel.

I honestly don't know what I liked best about Nikki Griffin- her investigative skills, her smarts, her work on behalf of abused women, her love for her brother, or her deep knowledge of and love for books. Nikki is hired by a tech guy to find out who one of his employees, Karen Li, is selling info to. Frankly, the answer (and its outcome) was less interesting to me than how Nikki worked out what was happening to Karen and then to herself. The novel is interspersed with Nikki's sessions with an unnamed therapist; the reasons for this mandatory treatment doesn't come out for a long time and not in the doctor's office. Nikki's a tough, determined woman who has no fear of physical violence, which she is very good at dishing out. Her love interest, Ethan, is nicely drawn (I admit I wasn't certain about him for a while). How can a reader not love a book where the protagonist recommends books to others? She picked out one for a customer that I want to read. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. She's tough, she's seeking justice, and she's a darn cool new heroine- and I'm really looking foward to the next one.
A great story with a no-nonsense lead character. Nikki's toughness is proven to the reader within the first few pages. Not being sure where the book is headed from here, I was almost hesitant to continue... DO NOT hesitate! This is an absolutely excellent read. And, yes, Nikki is tough - however she solidly believes in the old adage. "an eye for an eye". Strong characters (a few unlikeable. of course!) help to lead the way in this story Yes, we find that Nikki has a heart but is tough when need be. As the story moves on, we find out about Nikki and her brother's parents and the problems they faced when they were very young.I hope that S. A. Lelchuk has a sequel, soon - I will be thrilled to read it!Hats off to a brilliant writer and a superb read!!!Many thanks to Flatiron Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this winner!
