Wow. I’m adding this to my list of ‘books to re-read’. I really liked this book. It covers the lives of two women at a point in time where the concepts of feminism are starting to get traction. The author covers feminists, both male and female, in the book, and it’s fascinating to read about the different options to open to women of the time. I recommend this very highly.

Elizabeth Goldsmith's The King's Mistresses is a fast-paced yet serious, empathetic yet solidly researched, close look at the lives of the Mancini sisters, nieces of the famous Cardinal Mazarin who more or less ruled France for a generation during the minority of King Louis XIV. Both were richly but unhappily married and fled their husbands in a time when society simply did not recognize the right of wives to leave even the most bizarre of male-owned households.Their story is told with grace and erudition in an enthralling tale of two arranged marriages gone bad, narrow escapes from domineering and brutal, borderline crazy husbands, a Europe-wide cry for understanding their plight, and the life-long bond of sisterhood in both wealth and misery. Readers will be frustrated at the extent to which a husband's authority over his wife was protected even by those who, like Louis XIV himself, had every sympathy for the unhappy sisters trapped in unholy matrimony. Kings appear (including Louis XIV of France, Charles II of England, and Carlos II of Spain) not to mention queens, regents, cardinals, dukes and counts galore, yet by analyzing and quoting the hard-to-find letters of the sisters themselves and their friends in depth, Goldsmith brings us so directly and so closely into the personal lives of these three-centuries-dead noblewomen that it seems at times as if she were writing the biography of two infamous women who just died in this last decade. The Mancinis will enter your mind easily, but they will linger there long after the book's last pages have been turned...

The book reads almost like a soap opera script, for one can't believe the ups and downs of these two women, sisters, and their lives. Although born into the aristocracy, neither woman had it easy, for women had so few rights back then. They are bartered by family members for power, and their marriages aren't for love but for social--political connections. You couldn't pay me enough money to want to live as a woman of the aristocracy in the 18th century. Their lives were not their own as this books shows quite well. I felt sorry for Marie and Hortense, yet I also got tired of them too for they seemed to make the same mistakes throughout their lives.I was drawn in by their story, so good writing here.

This is an intriguing book and the result of some excellent research. As the other reviewers have well explained, these two sisters defied all the rules of the day to fight for their independence, particularly from their obnoxious and cruel husbands. In the process they somehow managed to become mistresses of the two great kings of the period: The Sun King, Louis XIV of France and the famous/infamous but always delightful Charles II of England. They fled across Europe to evade control of their possessing husbands. You will be both amazed by their stories (they were always brave but not always wise) and learn a great deal about those interesting times. If you have any interest in English/French/Italian/Spanish history of the period, don't miss this book.

I liked that it gave the reader a different view of how women managed in days past.

Genuinely modern women. On a historical note, I was surprised to read just how Italian Cardinal Mazarin was.

Ms. Goldsmith does true justice in bringing to life the stories of two women who had the courage to pursue their own independence and freedom at a time when wives were considered property of their husbands. She helps the reader to understand the historical, political and social context of the day so that the reader gains full appreciation for the sacrifices and obstacles these women overcame. We come to admire their sheer guts and willingness to go against social norms of the day, and they do so with vitality, cunning and no shame. These two were true pioneers of the feminist movement - kudos to Ms. Goldsmith for not letting these incredible women become minor footnotes in history!It is important to note that this is not a historical novel, but rather a well-organized dissertation of Marie and Hortense Mancini as might be expected of a university professor author.

Two sisters, friends of King George XIV, made their contributions to the modern day woman. They left their husbands and children in order to "live, make their own decisions, own art, have their own money. Intriguing.

This book traces Freemasonry back to misty beginnings before the Norman Conquest, and it outlines the ins and outs of Masons in all the countries of Europe, some of Asia, and the rest of the British Empire, and of course the U.S. We become aware that Masons have been involved in affairs both noble and tawdry, everywhere they lived; that they were sometimes embroiled in political nastiness and royal squabbles; that they participated in major political movements across centuries. All of this is interesting enough. What we don't find out about is what Masons believe, what informs their not so secret rituals, and why they have persisted so long.The book was thus interesting enough, if sometimes tedious; but it never told me what I wanted to know. Why did my grandfather belong?

A well researched and balanced synopsis of the history of Freemasonry with details of individuals who belonged and some who didn't though they were accused of belonging. Doesn't reveal a lot of details of the internal workings and secrets, but enuouhg to give one a sense of the mystery. Leans more toward defending the society from the maligners, without whitewashing the bad parts.Very interesting historical background and biographical context included to help the reader understand the circumstances of both the good and bad events.

Jumps around too much without anything like a real, events timeline. I tend to enjoy reading history but i can't recommend this one to anybody. I quit reading before the 60% read point, which is totally unusual for me since, I'm prone to stick in there until the bitter end. The book is sort of amazing in how it describes all the many conflicts that raged in various places during the 1700s and 1800s. It's sort of amazing people still exist!

The author is quite thorough and covering the Masons in history including how the original guild transforms to the think group of their latter existence. The author covers all the way from the middle ages to today He does so with much the same method used by the Chroniclers of the Hebrew kings in the Old Testament. Showing how the exclusive trade of masons building castles etc. made for an elite class of wealthier tradesmen. The mobility required in this trade opened the door for international experience and thinking for when the group transformed to a discussion club. A person not acquainted with world history may have trouble following the story as the author goes to one country to tell a story and then jumps back in time to another country to pick up the story from where he left off there. From reading this I have come to the conclusion that the Masons are as much a result of thinking that had become prevalent as they are and have been influencers of thinking. It is nonetheless amazing how many and how different the prominent people that were masons stand out in history.

a little long in the tooth, and coulda been 150 pages less and would have been more interesting.

More historically complete than other books I have reqad on this topic.

This book was very relevant to the times we are in. As the Head of HR for a rapidly growing start up, I could not find this book more appropriate for the challenges that we are facing. It is something that we are asking our new hires to read as part of their onboarding process to keep them motivated. Everyone should read this, but it would also be perfect for those pursuing MBAs. It has the perfect blend of old and new examples, and it was so easy to read.

What a great book! Although written for managers, it's a great read for anyone looking to learn about past and present competitive markets. It's full of interesting case studies and stories on how the world’s most recognizable and beloved brands had to fight their way to make it where they are today. Certainly an eye-opener, and a fun and informative title!

The book keeps on sharing history and tried to proof about the Leap is possible for mass production and automation ....

Howard Yu quotes one of the most important passages in Joseph Schumpeter's classic, Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy (1942): "The opening up of new markets, foreign or domestic...illustrate the same process of industrial mutation that incessantly revolutionizes the economic structure from within, incessantly destroying destroying the old one, incessantly creating a new one. The process of Creative Destruction is the essential fact about capitalism."I am among those who are convinced that the global marketplace today is more volatile, more uncertain, more complex, and more Ambiguous that any prior time that we can remember. "The only way to prosper under such conditions over long periods of time is to [begin italics] leap: Pioneers must move across knowledge disciplines, to leverage or create new knowledge on how a product is made or delivered. Absent such efforts, latecomers will always catch up."Yu suggests that getting ready to leap requires a different way of thinking about and leading the business. The preparation process should be guided and informed by these five fundamental principles:1. Understand your firm's foundational knowledge and its trajectory.2. Acquire and cultivate new knowledge disciplines.3. Leverage seismic shifts.4. Experiment to gain evidence.5. Dive deep into execution.I commend Yu on his brilliant use of mini-case studies that examine effective initiatives that bring these principles to life. More specifically, he focuses on exemplars that include Community Ground/Breaking Group (154-161), DARPA (Pages 104-118), John Deere (212-217), Novartis (66-78), Procter & Gamble (51-61 and 66-67), and Steinway & Sons (17-39). When to leap?"Listening to the right signals [while ignoring the noise] requires patience and discipline. Seizing a window of opportunity, which means not necessarily being the first mover but the first to get it right, takes courage and determination. To leap successfully is to master these two seemingly contradictory abilities. The discipline to wait and the determination to drive, in balanced combination, often pay off handsomely. Cultivating this paradoxical ability at the individual and organizational levels" is an ongoing process, not an isolated achievement.As I worked my way through Howard Yu's final chapter, I was again reminded of three observations. First, from Helen Keller: "Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing." The next from Steven Wright: "The early bird may get the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese." And the third from the Gambler: "You gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em," etc. All are sensible but not all leaps are sensible. Some are impulsive, others are retaliatory, and still others are dumb as a 100 chickens.Howard Yu is a staunch and eloquent, indeed compelling advocate of leaps that have a degree of risk, yes, but are rigorously considered to the extent a given situation allows. The key point is that some decisions -- albeit less than perfect -- must be made in rapid response to an unexpected development. Organizations are only as resilient as their leaders are.This book is timely and, in my opinion, will prove timeless in a global marketplace in which change really is the only constant. Bravo!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I didn’t want to skip a thought. I really appreciated the depth of the case studies as they provided me with so many examples; from different periods of time, different geographic locations and different industries in different environments. I appreciated the skill with which Mr Yu crafted his perspective, based on in-depth research, and linked it to the case studies. He created tension in some places and then released it, by detailing what today’s leaders need to do in order not to sink into obscurity. The read was challenging and inspiring.He outlines how, "These principles both explain and predict how companies can prosper when labour, information and money move easily, cheaply and almost instantaneously.” and argues, “ The only way to prosper under these conditions over long periods is to leap.”Leaping requires we move out of our comfort zones, it requires that we get our heads around the fact that what we will be doing in the future is going to look very different to what we are doing now, and that leaders of organisations have very specific, very active roles in driving this change. “They have to personally intervene at critical junctures, wielding the power to overcome specific barriers.” It requires leaders to do, not just think.Mr Hu is clear that this is the way to stay ahead of copycats, to “forge ahead’ rather than ‘refining what has already been.” We must ‘leverage the seismic shifts”There are some hard truths for the reader to swallow, including detailed accounts of where world-class businesses have tripped and fallen, eg: assuming the present health of your company will continue indefinitely, or, that what made us successful in our early days will guide us to create the capabilities we will need going forward.He also quotes research from experts such as Professor Amar Bhide, ‘Most of the startups failed, as expected, but an overwhelming 93% of those that succeed had to abandon their original strategies because they were proven unviable. ...successful startups almost always have to do something different than what they promised their investors.”So we need to learn from failures and recognise the importance of doing something different, significantly different, from where we start (or where we are right now) is it is more than likely going to be the key to our future successIn the end, I did feel upbeat and that I can do this, I can leap! No wait, let me rephrase that; to succeed for any length of time, in a turbulent business environment, I WILL HAVE to leap.
