My Own Country: A Doctor's Story of a Town and Its People in the Age of Aids

From Publishers Weekly

When infectious-disease specialist Verghese, the Ethiopian-born son of Indian schoolteachers, emigrated to the U.S. and settled in Johnson City, Tenn., in the mid-1980s, he finally felt at peace "in my own country" at last. But his work at the Johnson City Medical Center soon led him into a shadow world of Bible-belt AIDS, often without the support of his colleagues. Verghese discovered a local gay community that was then untested for the HIV virus. If revealed, these people's closeted relationships would have, writes Verghese, made them stand out "like Martians." The author tells the stories of several patients, including the gay man who must reconcile with his father and the "innocent" man who has contracted AIDS through a contaminated blood transfusion but who, concerned about society's response to his plight, keeps his disease a secret even though he believes that "this thing, this virus, is from hell, from the devil himself." Verghese reveals his own confusions about homosexuality, immigrant identity and his wife's fears about his health. Writing with an outsider's empathy and insight, casting his chronicle in graceful prose, he offers a memorable tale that both captures and transcends time and place. From Library Journal

In fall 1985 Verghese--who was born in Ethiopia of Indian parents--returned with his wife and newborn son to Johnson City, Tennessee, where he had done his internship and residence. As he watched AIDS infect the small town, he and the community learned many things from one another, including the power of compassion. An AIDS expert who initially had no patients, Verghese describes meeting gay men and then eventually others struggling with this new disease. Verghese's patients include a factory worker confronting her husband's AIDS, bisexuality, and her own HIV status and a religious couple infected via a blood transfusion attempting to keep their disease secret from their church and their children. This novelistic account, occasionally overly detailed, provides a heartfelt perspective on the American response to the spread of AIDS. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 1/94.- James E. Abraham Verghese is a physician, a specialist in internal medicine and infectious diseases. His medical training was in Ethiopia and India. He came to the United States as an FMG (foreign medical graduate). After finishing his residency and a fellowship, he settled in Johnson City, Tennessee in 1985. Because of his work in Boston, he was the most knowledgeable doctor in the Johnson City area about AIDS, but AIDS was not yet present when he arrived. Four years later, when he left Johnson City, there had been dozens of deaths from AIDS and he had over eighty HIV-infected persons under his care. Johnson City, with its 50,000 residents, had a hundred-fold more cases than the CDC would have predicted for it. MY OWN COUNTRY is Verghese's account of his four years in Johnson City, Tennessee, fighting an ever-mushrooming battle with AIDS and coming to love a corner of Appalachia. Two subjects predominate. One, of course, is AIDS. The book is studded with case studies, as Verghese sees a wide array of the insidious ways in which AIDS manifests itself and kills. Most of his patients had obtained HIV elsewhere and had moved back to the Johnson City area once they became ill. Acquisition for most was via unprotected homosexual contact, but for a few it was through tainted blood or plasma or via heterosexual intercourse. The disease was hellish in and of itself, but often the social ripple effects were also dreadful -- from contempt and rejection on the part of family members and community, to refusals to treat by doctors and dentists, to boycotting by undertakers. As Verghese writes, "I was improvising constantly to deal with the moral, ethical and social subtleties that were so much a part of this disease."The second principal subject involves medical practice in general in this country. When Verghese chose to specialize in infectious diseases, he relegated himself to second-tier status among his physician colleagues, especially financially. Medicine was transforming itself into a get-rich business, and the big money was in conducting processes and performing procedures, as opposed to diagnosing patients and being their primary care physician. As Verghese came to realize, proper treatment often required a holistic approach, which in turn required an understanding of the dynamics of the patient's relationships with family, friends, and community. In the thirty years since, the economics of medicine has gotten more out-of-control, and the quality of medical care has decreased. Even in 1985, many of the doctors and medical staff in rural hospitals and in urban public hospitals were foreign-trained, working in the U.S. with visas. If the U.S. continues to insulate itself from the world at large, how will these roles be filled in the future?Verghese, however, does not harp on these and other social/medical policy issues or become preachy. Foremost, MY OWN COUNTRY contains umpteen different tales of human suffering and endurance, surprisingly often heroic and dignified in nature. For every incident of contempt and rejection, there is one of care and compassion. Two heroes in particular stand out -- Essie Vines, who cared and advocated for her brother Gordon, and Fred Goodson, who did likewise for his partner Otis Jackson and also was the principal organizer and force behind the local AIDS-support group. Anecdotally, there are a handful of intriguing "human interest" stories, such as "John Doe", a debilitated old man with a stroke, diabetes and pneumonia who had been left at the emergency room entrance while the family went to "park the car" and were never seen again; or Vickie McCray, who got HIV from her husband, who unbeknownst to her often had had sex with a male friend from his youth and then went on to give the virus to Vickie's sister as well (Vickie told Verghese that "ever since I found out he has AIDS, I've been feeling too sorry for him to be angry with him. No one deserves to be sick lik'at. No one deserves to lose their mind lik'at.").MY OWN COUNTRY is not a perfect book. At times, Verghese goes too far down rabbit trails of marginal relevancy (especially when he describes geography and the routes from one place to another); the book is a tad manipulative; occasionally Verghese, although a truly remarkable person, comes across as a little holier-than-thou; and the sentimental reference to "my own country" seems a wee bit hypocritical given that Verghese left the Johnson City area after four years, never to live there again. That said, and even though the book now is over twenty years old, MY OWN COUNTRY deserves to be read. It is interesting throughout, it is very readable, and reading it will surely broaden almost everyone's horizons of humanity.

The thought of me reading and being transfixed by a book about the Aids Epidemic in rural Kentucky in the 1980's as told by a transplanted Indian doctor seemed pretty remote. But as I heard each of these patient's heartbreaking stories and how this internist tries to humanly treat their health concerns with compassion and love, I couldn't stop reading. Abraham Verghese paints a vivid literal picture of life in rural Kentucky and the personal struggles of the patients and the doctor who feels compelled to treat them when other medical professionals shun them. These deeply personal tragic stories will bring you to tears and touch your heart. I highly recommend this book and Verghese's other best seller "Cutting for Stone".

In My Own Country is an autobiographical narrative of Dr. Abraham Verghese and his work as an infectious disease physician in rural Tennessee during the early years of the HIV pandemic. Verghese is a powerful writer, and his rendering of the AIDS crisis immortalizes the victims of the AIDS crisis in Johnson City. More than that, Verghese offers a rare perspective of the time—he starts out his story as little more than an outsider stumbling into an interesting medical phenomenon. He was not gay, had little connection with gay community, and was neither an advocate nor an enemy of gay men. Yet, over the course of the novel we see how their stories begin to envelope him. At first Verghese seems like an interested outsider, and we wonder if his fascination is purely medical. But when the young men come to him he learns their names, and he asks for their stories. Perhaps because he is a real foreigner in a place that has made them to feel foreign too, they open up to him. Giving his patients the opportunity to speak is one of the few medicines Verghese has. Medically speaking, he offers little in terms of real therapy. He becomes a doctor specializing in palliative care.Over the course of the novel, Dr. Verghese shows his readers the immense role a physician can play in the lives of patients. His patients are dying. They are afraid. There is little he can do to ease these physical pains. But he is there for them. And it is clear that many of them feel a true patient-physician bond with him as he helps them navigate their journey from life to death. This isn’t an easy process for the patients dying of AIDS, or for Dr. Verghese. As we see a community form around his perseverance to treat his patients with dignity, we also see how his job begins to overtake his life. As Verghese becomes indispensible to his patients, his relationship with his wife and family deteriorates. We feel for the doctor as he misses important moments in his personal life. We can feel how he is pulled in different directions. He needs to choose between his patients and his family. We see how he chooses his patients. By the end of the novel, it is clear that Dr. Verghese is burned out. His marriage is strained and he has nightmares about the infection that consumes his working hours. We end the book with the same uncertainty that he feels. It turns out that the doctor’s calling has drained his spirit. The book ends with Dr. Verghese making an important discovery about the pattern of AIDS in rural areas, and deciding to leave Johnson city for somewhere new and more detached. It is a conclusion that fits the topic. This book is not just about a viral pandemic. It does a good job of detailing HIV before treatments, but it’s mostly about the evolution of an idealistic physician. Read this book if you’d like to understand how incurable diseases affect both patients and their healthcare providers. You’ll get a glimpse into the hidden and sometimes heart-wrenching world of doctor-patient relationships.

A unique picture of the AIDS epidemic in the rural south. Intimate and detailed portraits of each person, their different circumstances and how it affected their family and friends. Poignant and personal. Verghese brings the reader with him as he becomes immersed in the lives and personal devastation unleashed by this terminal and vicious disease. Finally, he lets us see the problems and frustrations in his own family by his overwhelming emotional ties with his patients and the hours upon hours required of him to adequately care for them as well as the affects on his family.

Yellow Star, by Jennifer Roy

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Grade 5-9–In thoughtful, vividly descriptive, almost poetic prose, Roy retells the true story of her Aunt Syvia's experiences in the Lodz Ghetto during the Nazi occupation of Poland. The slightly fictionalized story, re-created from her aunt's taped narrative, is related by Syvia herself as a series of titled vignettes that cover the period from fall, 1939, when she is four years old, until January 1945–each one recounting a particular detail-filled memory in the child's life (a happy-colored yellow star sewn on her favorite orange coat; a hole in the cemetery where she hides overnight with her Papa). The book is divided into five chronological sections–each with a short factual introduction to the period covered. An appended author's note tells what happened to Syvia's family after the war. A time line of World War II, beginning with the German invasion of Poland, is also included. This gripping and very readable narrative, filled with the astute observations of a young child, brings to life the Jewish ghetto experience in a unique and memorable way. This book is a standout in the genre of Holocaust literature.–Susan Scheps, Shaker Heights Public Library, OH Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

*Starred Review* Only 12 children survived the Lodz ghetto, and Roy's aunt Syvia was one of them. But for more than 50 years, Syvia kept her experience to herself: "It was something nobody talked about." Roy didn't know, and she admits that she didn't want to know. She always avoided Holocaust history. She was afraid of it; when she was growing up, there was no Holocaust curriculum, no discussion-just those images of atrocity, piles of bones, and skeletal survivors being liberated. Her father, too, was a survivor, but he seldom spoke of those years, and with his death, his story was lost. But a few years ago, Roy's aunt began to talk about Lodz, and based on taped phone interviews, Roy wrote her story, presenting it from the first-person viewpoint of a child, Syvia, in simple, urgent free verse in the present tense. Each section begins with a brief historical introduction, and there is a detailed time line at the end of the book.Syvia is four years old in 1939, when the Germans invade Poland and start World War II. A few months later, her family is forced into the crowded Lodz ghetto, with more than a quarter of a million other Jews. At the end of the war, when Syvia is 10, only about 800 Jews remain-only 12 of them are children. Syvia remembers daily life: yellow stars, illness, starvation, freezing cold, and brutal abuse, with puddles of red blood everywhere, and the terrifying arbitrariness of events ("like the story of a boy / who went out for bread / and was shot by a guard / who didn't like the way the boy / looked at him"). When the soldiers first go from door to door, "ripping children from their parents' arms" and dragging them away, her father hides her in the cemetery. For years thereafter, she's not allowed to go outside. In 1944 the ghetto is emptied, except for a few Jews kept back to clean up, including Syvia's father, who keeps his family with him through courage, cunning, and luck. As the Nazis face defeat, Syvia discovers a few others hidden like her, "children of the cellar." When the Russians liberate the ghetto, she hears one soldier speak Yiddish, and the family hears of the genocide, the trains that went to death camps. At last they learn of the enormity of the tragedy: neighbors, friends, and cousins-all dead. There's much to think t and talk about as the words bring the history right into the present. I am a pretty slow reader and I bought this and downloaded it and read it while at work and was almost finished with itin 3 hours, finished it the next day!! I have read a few book on the Holocaust and this one was by far the easiest to read. I can not wrap my brain around what these people endured back then it is just inhumane to think that anyone could be so cruel and sinister! I have a friend and his mother is French and father Belgian and she has told us story of them having to escape France with their children so as not to get caught up in WW2 even though they were not Jewish. I think Hitler wanted to wipe out every race but his own!! So horrific! I hope we don't wipe the stories of the Holocaust out they way we seem to be wiping out all of the other History because it offends someone!!! It would be a tragedy for these truths to go untold!!! WE NEED TO LEARN FROM OUR HISTORY AND MOVE FORWARD WITH THAT KNOWLEDGE AND NEVER REPEAT IT!!!!

Over 6 million people of Jewish descent were killed during what is now known as the Holocaust at the time of World War II. Of those 6 million, 1 million were children. In the Lodz ghetto of Poland, thousands of Jewish people were forced to live in an already burgeoning area. Of all the people sent there only 800 adults and 12 children survived.Author Jennifer Roy, who wrote the book, Yellow Star, tells life in the Lodz ghetto in first person narrative. Her aunt, Syvia Perlmutter (Rozines) now know as Sylvia was one of the 12 children to survive. She was 10 years old when the Russians liberated the area. This is her story told through her eyes as a young child. The book begins all chapters with a bit of history timeline for the area. The first chapters open the book as Syvia is just 4 year old and must move from their home to the Lodz ghetto. She speaks about her older sister, Dora and her parents. She adores all of them as they do her.The story moves along with each year of Syvia getting older and each year a hardship on her family. Syvia is too young to work and often is left alone or in hiding so as not to be captured and shipped off by the Nazi's.She speaks of people missing including her best friends to never return. She laments about her favorite doll being 'misplaced' knowing full well that the doll was sold in order for her family to eat. She never complains. In more than a harrowing time, she is forced to hide with her father in a dug out ditch in a graveyard to save herself from being killed. Another time, she is hidden in a cellar, right under the noses of the Nazi's, with the 11 other remaining children in the ghetto, which includes her baby cousin. There she faces illness and always near starvation. At a mere one day shy of her 10th birthday, Syvia had a brave streak and managed to wake her father who in turn awakened the entire community in order to save them from a mass bombing that the allies had begun on the ghetto. What saved them most? Their will to live, their tenacity and yes, believe it or not, their sewn yellow stars.-----------------This book I read in two hours. I simply could not put it down. Syvia's story must be told!It took her 50 years after the events to tell her niece, the author, her story but tell it she did.I applaud Mrs. Rozines' bravery once again to tell her painful story. Without these stories of those who survived such an atrocity of history, their names and legends would never be remembered. Worse yet, the history would be long forgotten and it should not be.This book well deserves the 5 stars I am giving it. In fact, it deserves much more. I encourage you to visit a Holocaust Museum in your area if there is one or if you are in the Washington DC area visit the National Holocaust Museum. You might even find Sylvia Rozine there.~Naila MoonDisclosure: I downloaded a free copy of this book on my Kindle. The views expressed here are 100% my own.

I was fortunate to hear Sylvia Rozines speak at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum First Person 2015 Series. I was very moved by the experience and anxious to delve further into her story and read this book. I wasn't disappointed. The book is an easy read, as it is written in her voice as a child living these atrocities. It is not gory or graphic, but still well told and takes you through this dark, tragic piece of history. Mrs. Rozines made a point that stuck with me and made me feel all the more honored to get to see her and hear her speak - although she was a young girl when this happened to her, she was old enough to remember her story. Those younger can tell their family stories, but these are her own memories.

This book is full of information about the war and how the Jewish were treated. It is a very interesting, but harsh, story through a young girl`s eyes and feelings. It is short and easy to read.

What a moving story! When I first downloaded this book, I hadn't noticed it's on the middle grade level, but you know what? It didn't matter. The simplicity of the phrasing made it all the more powerful. What the author did by turning her aunt's real life story into a book that both records family history and educates children is just a gift all the way around. This book relives the horrors of the Holocaust as seen through the eyes of a child who suffered through it in the Lodz ghetto. Told in the first person, the reader can't help but feel what Syvia feels. It's a brilliant method of storytelling, and I think this book should be taught in schools alongside the Diary of Anne Frank. It's that powerful and that important. Never forget!

Good beginner/intermediate book. Generally good information on basics but some topics leave something to be desired in that she refers the reader to go to a professional to figure things out.

The book is a good basic introduction, but it is almost a clone of another book by the same authors

I just started with archery. This is a great book for beginners that cover all the basics. It is written in terms you can understand.

As a new student of archery, I was looking for an introductory book that provided a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of the sport from equipment to technique. This book provides that and more. I recommend it for any beginner or intermediate archer.

Definitely for a beginner. Not a lot of technical info. Not organized well.

Great fundamental book - perfect for a beginner

Great book for the beginner

Great book. Step by step advice. Even had a section on traditional archery which I have been interested in. This book whets your appetite for more. Probably not suited for experienced archer. But as a beginner, it was perfect.

In Mark Kurlansky's wonderful book, The Big Oyster: History on the Half Shell we learn about the bivalve bounty that once existed off the shores of Manhattan. Kurlansnky writes, "By 1880, New York was the undisputed capital of history's greatest oyster boom in its golden age, which lasted until at least 1910. The oyster beds of the New York area were producing 700 million oysters a year."The first blow to oyster production was sewage. "The reality is that millions of people produce far too much sewage to co-exist with millions of oysters...A million times worse than pollution happened. The silt and sludge alone would have been enough to kill oysters, which would sink in it and suffocate. But the industrial wastes consisted of heavy metals, including seven thousand pounds of zinc, copper, lead chromium, and nickel that entered the city sewer system every day...Between the 1940's and the 1970's, General Electric dumped hundreds of thousand of pounds of polycholorinated biphenyls, PCBs, into the Hudson..Concentrations of six heavy metals were found in the 1980's in the central muddy portion of the bay (Raritan). They had entered the water from the many factories built on the Raritan Rover during World War II. With the sentiment "anything for the war effort," these industries were allowed to freely dump into the river, and the practice continued after the war. In 1978, Raritan Bay was found to have the highest concentration of hydrocarbons. Fish in the bay were found to be laced with PCBs. The fish were often misshapen by a pollution-caused disease known as "fin-erosion disease." The Big Oyster.World War II was the most destructive war in the history of mankind claiming the lives of around 60 to 70 million casualties worldwide; another casualty was the oyster beds of New York. America's Military Industrial Complex may have knocked off Hitler and Tojo, liberated the Nazi and Japanese concentration camps, but it also has the death of billions of oysters on its hands as well. In order to construct Freedom's Forge (Freedom's Forge: How American Business Produced Victory in World War II)and win World War II the tasty bivalves of New York had to walk the plank. This book is filled with tasty insight into the history of oysters around the New York area and much more. I loved it.If you liked The Big Oyster you will also enjoy America Invades: How We've Invaded or been Militarily Involved with almost Every Country on Earth by Kelly / Laycock and Italy Invades

Mark Kurlansky blends two great histories: New York City and NYC's Oysters. In addition to in-depth research on both the city and oysters, maps show the New York City area, verbatim diaries, journal writings, book excerpts, and authentic oyster advertisements of the day. Even recipes for "oyster pie" and oyster soup and numerous other oyster dishes from those times are included. You will learn the evolutionary strengths and the anatomy of oysters. This Kurlansky's style brings the city residents, the eaters of oysters, workers who gathered them, and the restaurants and food stands that sold them. The reader can go back in the past and relive New York back in the days when the Dutch controlled it. The laws, taverns, population, and rural aspect of then-Manhattan come to life. And you learn than oysters are not only durable but pretty intelligent, considering that they are, well, bivalves. With the popularity of oysters and the harvesting came the necessary rules of who and when they could be harvested, and territorial areas were legally assigned by the local governments then. New York and New Jersey had to co-operate on who could harvest where as certain areas were disputable.*The Bronx borough was named after a Swedish-born sea captain named Bronck.*The Battle of Brooklyn was the largest land battle of the Revolutionary War.*In 1773 there were 396 Taverns in Manhattan*In 1750 NYC was the leading American city for oyster and alcohol consumption.*Gangs such as the "Swamp Angels, Dead Rabbits, and Daybreak Boys" fought lethal and violent battles against one another, and gang fights could involve 1,000 gang members in the fights.*The 1863 anti-draft riot involved 50-70,000 rioters with killings, torture, gangs, and burning.*Oysters can live without water for days, and even longer if sprinkled with oatmeal for food.*The word "cookies" comes from the Dutch word "koeckjes"As for lifestyle, Manhattan was not as austere as the Puritan areas to the north, thanks to the first controllers, the Dutch. Captain Kidd lived in Manhattan was a celebrity there. He went up to Boston where he was arrested, sent to England, and hanged. "Boston, was never New York."Not only were oysters ubiquitous in the vast waterways of the entire New York region, but they were very affordable, provided protein and food for the poor. All classes frequently ate the oysters. The book ends at present day, and many of the oyster beds (and numerous fish species) have succumbed to the toxic chemicals and pollutants. Environmental groups in the latter 20th Century did take action against the most blatent offending companies polluting and even cited some of the oldest environmental laws on the book dating to the 17 and 1800s.A quick, upbeat, writing style supplanted with lots of research and stats. This informative, well written and enjoyable read by Mark Kulansky motivates me to read his other works.
