A few of the parables are indeed "zingy," especially those addressing age-old problems such as racism or more contemporary issues, including movie violence and Christianity's uniqueness among other religions. One of the gems worth digging for is the "Parable of the Self-Righteous Man," in which Girzone tackles our culture's predilection for do-it-yourself religion and insists, "You cannot become truly holy all by yourself. Holiness is love. It is knowing and loving God and his creatures." Other parables fall flat. For example, in the "Parable of the Ark," the Church is rather blandly compared to Noah's Ark--it is often unpleasant, but still the only way out of the storm. Fans of Girzone will be delighted with another Joshua read, although it's not quite up to par. Those who are unfamiliar with the series would be better off reading an earlier installment. Girzone's simple tales of Joshua, or Jesus in a modern-day setting, have a certain spare charm, though to many readers they are too simplistic to be effective. In any case, Joshua is back, this time not in a story but in a reinvention of Jesus' New Testament parables. "The Parable of the Beautiful Garden" tells us that pollution is bad, while "The Parable of the Precious Seed" shows the folly of abortion. "The Parable of the Criminal and the Righteous Politician" is an appeal to ban executions. Many of Girzone's parables treat hypocrisy: "The Parable of the Unworthy Shepherd" and "The Terrorist and the Unwed Mother." Some of Girzone's parables make allusion to the originals, which Girzone feels are seen by contemporary readers as archaic and no longer relevant. But is this really so? Don't even the irreligious feel that the stories of the prodigal son or of the rich man are great life-lessons? Perhaps Girzone's feeble imitations, which are sure to draw a wide audience, will send contemporary readers back to the New Testament; they would be better served if they did so. I really enjoy the Joshua Series...looking forward to each new book in the series. Never a disappointment!

Not as good as his other books but it might take a few reads to get all of the meanings straight

I like these. I was expecting the parables I was familiar with from the Bible to be rewritten for modern day. Even though these were unrelated, they were still very good.

That time in Bogles takes you into the life of Grenadian Daniel as he spends the Easter holidays with his Kayak cousins. D E Ambrose does a wonderful job capturing the vernacular in an easy to understand yet well developed manner. Even to mainland Grenadians it is a history and cultural treasure chest as it captures the customs, activities and every day life that makes Carriacou such a unique place. Well done Mr Ambrose.

Like a guava cheese, boiled down to a morsel of sweet goodness, Ambrose manages, with great skill, to condense within sixty-six pages, a tasty account of Kayak life in the 80s, through his main characters Daniel and Elijah, in That Time in Bogles. Ambrose encapsulates the way of life in Carriacou, with a little sample of every aspect of the culture, through its festivals, music, ceremonies, food, characters- everything of significance gets a little mention: from taytay plums to headless chicken to very brief encounters with Bamboo, the old headmaster and Ras- with his “ imprisoned locks”. Ambrose reminds us of the easy pace and simplicity of the good old days- when people used to exchange Sunday meals, and pay respects to ancestral spirits- with libations. He makes me want to create memories of my own Time in Bogles. I could however do without having to “hit the pit”!And now I have eaten my guava cheese, I am ready for the rest of Sunday food, which Ambrose left back for later, because I am still hungry and so thirsty for some of Tanty’s gospo juice.A beautiful, atmospheric tale of life on the sister isle of Carriacou. Great work Ambrose!

Any one wanting a sense of what it felt like growing up before the emergence of cellphones, laptops, i pads and the internet should pick up a copy of this book. This book is honest, thought provoking, riveting. The deep traditions of Bogles, Carriacou is exposed before the reader taking us back in time to our own experiences growing up in any part of Grenada. The use of the local vernacular adds more flavor to the book making the reader anxious for more of Daniel's experiences. With the emergence of Facebook, Wats App, Face Time and other social media, the question that begs itself is are we losing those occasions that are near and dear to us that usually bring us together as families? Well done Mr. Ambrose on your publication.

I read this book without ever putting it down and thoroughly enjoyed it. That Time in Bogles is a page turner; no joke. All the treasured memories of growing up, or even living as an adult on the island, come flooding back, and if you weren't lucky enough to actually have had the experience, the author's deft skill at truly descriptive writing paints the pictures and creates the sounds that'll take you there. It's funny, too, and gave me many instances to laugh out loud. It's a Super Read!

In the summer of 1959, folklorist Lomax traveled to the South to collect the music distinctive of the region that contributed greatly to broader American culture. This was ground he’d covered in the 1930s with his father, also a folklore collector, as they lugged around a 300-pound recorder. This time, Lomax was hoping to capture American folklore as embodied in music before it was commercialized beyond recognition. His earlier efforts had made famous such artists as Huddie Ledbetter (Leadbelly) and the Georgia Sea Island Singers. Lomax took his camera along to record the lives as well as the music of those in work camps, prisons, and communities throughout the South. For those who are familiar with Alan Lomax's (and his folklorist father John Lomax's) pilgrimage's to the South to record the music found there, this book will be of valuable interest. Lomax's work has been documented in works like "The Land Where The Blues Began", "Alan Lomax The Man Who Recorded The World", "Alan Lomax Assistant In Charge-The Library Of Congress Letters 1935-1945" (a personal favorite), and also in a book of his selected writings.His work has (sometimes) been refuted in "Lost Delta Found", an interesting and informative look at Lomax and his research, which was named "The Fisk University-Library of Congress Coahoma County Study". It gives a slightly different account of the work these researchers (not just Lomax) did during that period. All armchair followers of Lomax should check into this book.This book is published by the Library of Congress, through Norton Publishers, hence the high jacket price for such a slim volume. Also included is a 36 minute CD of music Lomax recorded in (mostly) 1959-two tracks are from 1960. There's various genres of music included, plus track by track recording information, and a short, yet informative, background essay on the performers.This is the first book that shines the spotlight on Lomax's photographs he made while roaming throughout the South. The areas covered include Alabama, Georgia, Virginia, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Tennessee. The straightforward text is a good companion to the photos, but it's the many pictures (a few in color) of performers that Lomax came across in his travels that give this book meaning. And the long, informative captions alongside the images is one of the book's high points. This isn't a strictly photographic record of his travels, but it does shed light on a number of artists he did record.The photos include both well known and lesser known performers, which gives this book more weight and interest. Also included are photos of day to day life in the region-a farm auction, the town of Saltville, Va., a river Baptism in Mineola, Tx., and great candid portraits-like John Bray-a 6'7" singer, a photo of Wade Ward's wife at home-happily listening to a recording of her husband, and a photo of Lomax and Wade Ward listening to a playback of his music. But I could go on-there's several photos of chain gangs at work (wearing wide striped prison uniforms) that Lomax recorded, an unidentified homestead in Va., a beautiful color portrait of the blind singer Horton Barker, standing on his farm with a bucket in one hand and his cane crooked over his other arm. Or an equally beautiful b&w photograph of Ada Combs, playing her banjo on her front porch, with small children sitting at her feet. She lived in a shack (another photo) several miles from any road in Kentucky. But I think you get the idea of what's here.Is this where you should start investigating Lomax and his journeys? Possibly not. This book works best in conjunction with some of the titles mentioned above. While it's a stand alone work, the more knowledge you have concerning Lomax, the era, the music and the performers he recorded, the better foundation you'll have for viewing these photographs. It's about time someone has published a book featuring Lomax's many photos (well over 700 on this trip) he took on his discoveries in the Southern region of the U.S.And this nice little book, with a well written text that puts things in proper perspective, is a good introduction to what Alan Lomax was recording on his travels. Included is a Forward by noted author William Ferris, "Alan Lomax: The Long Journey", and the main text written by Tom Piazza that gives the photographs and the era some foundation. Hopefully, someday soon the balance of Lomax's photographic work will be published. Visually, it's as important as the great music he recorded for posterity. And that's another point-if you're not familiar with the music Lomax recorded-check out some of the albums from this era and the various regions. It's real "American music" from a time long since gone. But thanks to Alan Lomax (and others like him) we have both a photographic/written record, and all this wonderful music.

I had just become familiar with Mo Willems' Pigeon books when my son's preschool teacher recommended the Knuffle Bunny books to me. I read them all, and this one actually brought me to tears at the end. Not only because of the sweetness of the story, but because of the note to his daughter at the conclusion of the book. I had my own Knuffle Bunny in my Brown Bear, that I've had since I was a baby. When my son was born, I passed Brown Bear down to him, and at 7, he continues to sleep with him every night. I think reading about a child's love for her stuffed animal, and her decision at the end, was so touching, and so relatable to anyone who has really loved a toy or a stuffed animal. I am so glad I learned about these books, and imagine they are ones that will be passed down among the generations - hopefully with Brown bear.

What does it mean when you are the adult reading the book to your child and eventually end up dreaming about Mo Willems showing up at your child's school so you (yes, you the parent/adult) scream out, "Knuffle Bunny!" with such excitement like he's a rockstar, and then you get scolded by Mo himself because even though he wrote and illustrated the books, "I am not knuffle bunny!" Like seriously, get a hold of yourself, woman!Oh, Trixie and family- how I love this trilogy of your life with Knuffle Bunny. Yes, I know these are meant for children, but really- this is also made for parents who can appreciate the humor in the details of a child's life with a favorite stuffed animal. Isn't there something in your child's life that has "traveled" with them through the baby years, toddlerhood, and then on to the big kid school days? Did you ever wonder when that attachment or focus would move on, thinking, "Aren't they getting too big for this?" And then one day, inexplicably, they do in such a way that you wonder where the hell you stuck your head in while your child went and got all mature about it?This happens to Trixie and Knuffle Bunny in the last of the trilogy. Knuffle Bunny is set free, and he couldn't have ended up in a better way. But what is really weird about the epilogue in this book is that somehow Mo Willems ends up hiding secretly cut onions into the pages, because suddenly there are tears coming from your eyes, and you can't imagine why you are weeping over a children's book.Well done, Mr. Willems. You made a grown woman cry.

Mo Willems is fantastic. My daughter loves the Knuffle Bunny books. The library did not have Knuffle Bunny Free so I took a change in ordering without reading first and we were not disappointed. This book is so sweet and offers similar humor to the first book. My husband and I both teared up when we read the ending. My daughter (2.5) absolutely loves the book.

I would love to read this trilogy aloud to my kids' classes but I have yet to get through the epilogue without crying. My kids do not sleep with stuffed animals but we all love this series over the pigeon or Piggie & Gerold series (who make cameos for sure). The Knuffle series is the most realist Willems work in my opinion and the stories and illustrations are genuine. I may be biased since the series show a strong root in New York City, where I have roots, but I think the stories are universal. Sad that this is the end of a wonderful trilogy.

This was by far the best one in the series very touching wonderful ending I know it might be hard for some younger kids but my daughters nine now and has loved the books for years so she's really at a great age for understanding the ending of the book my only complaint was this book shows as being eligible for the free 2 day prime shipping and after I ordered it it took over 12 days to get to me so be careful if you need it quick

By far my favorite of the trilogy. Brings the knuffle bunny series to a close in such a heartfelt way. I won't give away the ending but I think the title does to some extent anyways. Brought tears to my eyes when Trixie was in the bath and she knew she was getting bigger, "even if she wished she wasn't." Ok, maybe my postpartum hormones have a part to play in that but still, this will tug at the heart strings of any parent. My son loves all of his Mo Willems books and this is no exception. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

I bought the Knuffle Bunny series for my own children, and have now started buying them as gifts for others as well. The stories are adorable, and who CAN'T relate to having their own beat-up, much-loved, Knuffle-Bunny-like stuffed animal? This last book, about "outgrowing," yet still loving, your own Knuffle Bunny, makes me tear up every time -- in a good way!

My son is a HUGE fan of the Knuffle Bunny series. I've been reading them to him since he was born. We ordered a Knuffle Bunny stuffed animal to go with this book and he squealed when he opened them. Although the first one is still his favorite, he really liked this one too. He thought Trixie was very brave to - *spoiler alert* - let her precious bunny go. I gotta be honest. We cried a little at the end.
