Used this to teach origins of WWI in high school. Great illustrations, very informative, allows you to critally consider the difference between a freedom fighter and a terrorist.
Great use of comic art and imagery with a compelling story and interesting characters. Based in Eastern Europe on a forgotten nationalist hero, who did the wrong thing but had the right reasons (Bosnian oppression at the hands of the Austrian Empire). Didn't think it was possible in a 1 volume comic, but great character development too. Great historical quotes from Otto Von Bismark and other historical figures at the time really put the reader in perspective of what's going on in the story. Excellent work! Could see this in a move, Howard Miller style.
Most of us know that Gavrilo Princip fired the shot that started the Great War, but the path that led him to his assassination of the Archduke is often left out of history textbooks. It can be confusing, with all the terrorist cells, the grievances against their Austrian overlords, and the failures and disappointments of a system that left millions in poverty. Henrik Rehr's graphic novel will explain Gavrillo Princip's path in a clear way with great illustration that make his story understandable. Even more, it resonates today with our own challenges of terrorism. It was thrilling for a reader to understand how this all came about, thanks to this graphic novel format. Better yet, the illustrator uses iconic photographs from World War I and turns them into art interspersed with Princip's story. Princip was not executed because of his youth, but weighed 88 pounds at his death, while a monument to his deed was placed on the spot where he did the assassination. This is a graphic history book at its best, compelling illustrations and accurate history with a myriad of characters and their viewpoints.
A graphic “novel†that tells the story of Gavrilo Princip, whose assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria would lead to World War I. The story is told in beautiful stark black and white drawings that capture the state of Princip’s young, zealous mind and eagerness for Yugoslav nationalism. The book, through Princip, wonders whether the aftermath was inevitable and if indeed one man did make a difference. An important historical story well-told.
Empire occupied Bosnia which was historically western Serbia. Language and culture is completely dofferent. Princip was freedom fighter and freedom is not free. He paid ultimate price for his principles - how ironic.
