This book is just simply wonderful! Almost as funny are the “1 star” reviews written by others who clearly take themselves so seriously that I can only imagine that their precious little sphincters just never get to relax. (My personal favorite referenced misogynistic tendencies, and let’s face it... you simply can’t argue with that many syllables!) If you own a sense of humor, treat yourself to this or any other book by Jill Conner Brown and revel in being a real woman!

Not a new book...but if you missed it, buy it!Now...I am Southern, female, and can identify with these crazy, fun-loving women. My age may be up there now, but the heart doesn't grow old. This book was given to me to make me laugh while recovering from a serious illness. It did its job well! I even ended up using part of it in my daughter's toast at her wedding reception. So, only if you love to laugh and do not take life too seriously, go out and read this book! There are the real deal...Southern Belles who know how to live life large while laughing at themselves.

I think it helps one's appreciation of this book to either be from the South or familiar with Southern culture. I happen to be from the North but visit my parents who now live in Alabama, and I have visited other parts of the South either to attend conferences or for vacation. Certain aspects of this book are so very funny that I could hardly believe someone could be so funny. I would laugh out loud and then phone someone, eager to share the ribald humor. It is as if the author got into my brain and wrote about certain topics, intimate topics! We read this for book club, and it certainly brought about interesting discussion from a group of gals who normally are not into sharing so openly.Though the humor is edgy, it is at no one's expense.Very, very funny!!!

If you are a Southern woman with a sense of humor, you MUST read this book! I laughed until it hurt. I was utterly COMPELLED to read several parts out loud to my husband so he'd stop giving me strange looks! LOLPart of what made it so funny is because it was so TRUE!Plus, this is not a fictional work. It is a humor book, so if you are in the mood for a 'pick-me-up' this is the book for you.Full of authentic Southern colloquialisms (sp?) that will "tickle you pink". Where else do you find books in print that use the words "fixin' to"??? For you Northerners that is a Southern term meaning "about to", as in "I'm fixin' to go to the store." And you'll even get the "southernisms" as I like to call them spelled out for you exactly the way we say them. :)Have fun reading this book and its sequel, "God Save the Sweet Potato Queens".

Jill Conner Browne and the Sweet Potato Queens will pull you out of whatever doldrums you may fall prey to, and lift your spirits with this hoot-on-every-page "book of love". You'll recognize yourselves and your friends, warts, foibles and all, in Jill's tales of the SWQs. As for the men in your life, well, check out the chapter about the essential five men every woman must have in her life. If you're one of the very few lucky ones who manages to find all five in just one guy, count your blessings and hold on to him for dear life! Jill's mama's recipe for "Chocolate Stuff" is a sure-fire cure for everything from extreme lovelornness to extreme summertime boredom. Give yourself a break from the "life is real, life is earnest" mindset and don your wig and sequinned outfit, honey. Life is frothy and life is fun, too! Highly recommended.

A funny and entertaining book for easy light reading. This was our book club read for fun and it fit the bill. Also, enjoyed a lengthy phone discussion with the author when our club met to review the book. Jill Browne was funny and informative about her experience within the Sweet Potato Queen's and what a great cause they raise money for while having a fun St Patrick's Day. Highly recommend

Although I myself am a southern belle, born and raised in Atlanta, Ga. I had never heard about the elusive Sweet Potato Queens until I happened upon this book. What a find it was! I can't remember the last time I giggled/laughed out loud so much at a book. The life, love, and food advice given by the leader of the Mississippi Sweet Potato Queens in this tell all book are hilarious if not dead on. I kept imagining the queens walking around in trashy lingerie and cooking up a storm, all the while being intelligent, happy, and well, Queenly. You get the sense that the author truly knows how to live life to the fullest & she's trying to pass that on through her excellent writing skills. This tome will make you want to liven up your life; or at least whip up one of the heavenly recipes provided. The Sweet Potato Queens Book of Love is truly a joy to read. Pick one up today; you won't be sorry :)

Pick this book up when you need a good laugh. I started reading about these outrageous women and their antics and almost fell off the couch several times because I was laughing so hard. The narrator appoints herself "Sweet Potato Queen" at a St. Patrick's Day Parade in Jackson, Mississippi. Her friends agree that such a fabulous idea should be shared and they too become self-appointed queens. The gals all wear unbelieavably proportioned green dresses and white majorette boots. Of course, being a queen is more than looking good, it is a way of life and readers are let in on important secrets such as how to get a man to do whatever you want. I have loaned my copy to a friend and have four more friends waiting in line to read it.

Okay Neal, what the hell were you thinking? HOW could you do this to me? Ima good person! I open doors for people, I smile at random people in the store, I always say please and thank you and I even make small talk with the weird over bearing cashier at the store I’m a damn good person and you throw THIS at me?!?!? How do you expect me to live with myself till book 3 comes out? Did you think about that? Did you think about ME!!! No!!! You didn’t! You only thought about yourself! You selfishly know everything that is going to happen in this series and what do I know? Not a fricken lot!!! You are just sitting happily in your comfy chair in your big posh office while I am laying on my love seat wrapped in a blanket rocking myself to sleep cause of that ending... THAT FRICKEN ENDING!!!! Well I sure hope you’re happy Neal!!!!! Cause I’m not!!! I won’t be happy again until book 3 comes out and that is on you! THAT IS ON YOU!!!!

To be honest, it took a bit for "Thunderhead" to click with me, but my son kept saying, "wait for it, just wait, you'll know when it happens." Well, it just happened and now I'm looking at the clock because there is no way I'm putting this down now. It's going to be a long night!4 HOURS LATER: For me, "Scythe" felt very much like Citra's story, so for "Thunderhead" I kept waiting for development for Rowan. We see a little of him as Scythe Lucifer, but supporting characters got a lot more time. And Rowan's plot certainly happens but it's far later in the book than I was expecting. Instead, we are introduced to another character, Grayson Tolliver, who serves some greater purpose. So his chapters, and another side plot, just felt like they derailed the momentum at times and it would take several chapters before we were back with Rowan. So the pacing was just slightly off, but not too much to take away an entire star. But the ending more than made up for the slower start...WOW!!! I agree with my son that this was an excellent read, maybe not my best read of the year as he's declaring, but Arc of a Scythe and Neal Shusterman are one of my best discoveries of 2018. Now both he and I are sitting here processing the novel, that ending, and agonizing over how long we'll have to wait for the finale.P.S. I would like to start the campaign for a prequel about Scythe Curie's early days.

I liked book 1. I LOVED book 2. I can’t say enough good things about this book. The world building continues as questions that you might have had in book one get answers or at least addressed. Like what about people who just like rebelling? Who is the Thunderhead? Is it a god? What does ultimate power or eve lack there of do to people?A new character named Greyson is introduced. He’s really cool as well despite me usually getting annoyed in sequels that suddenly seem to vary off into too many other directions with too many new characters. Greyson just works somehow. The end...I won’t spoil it but wow. I was not expecting that. Not at all. How soon is book 3 out?? Also the narrator, Greg Trembly for the audio of this book is one of the best. I alternated back and forth between the print and the audio, but usually wanted to hear him because he made the characters come alive.

Art of the Schthe seriesScytheThunderheadThis series is about the future on a whole "nother" level. Scythes were created to prevent over population since the world figured out how to conquer death. Now that you can reset your age to 21 and up, they needed to create a way from over population and that's where the scythes came in. Not just anyone could be a Scythe. Matter of fact, they tried to choose people who didn't want to be one, people that were against gleaning (killing), and those with compassion and empathy. While the Thunderhead controls and handles much of everything, they have no emotions or feelings so the Scythedom was created.Citra and Rowan was totally against gleaning which is why Scyth Faraday choose them to be his apprentices. Both will have to go through extensive training and many test to decide who will end up being the best scythe. Knowing how much they will lose if they fail, they both put all they had into it. Who will come out on top when a stipulation has been thrown in the mix? When one is given too much lead way, is it possible to do what is right? To do what you want, knowing it's wrong, will you do wrong anyway, knowing you may not be penalized?Thunder heads who punish the "unsavories" (people who committed crimes) and set the rules to abide by, and sees and know everything has no jurisdiction when it comes to Scythes. But like anything else, there are always loopholes and the Thunderhead is one slick dude, or should I say thing? In a world that started out perfect; one that conquered death and controls over population, is it too good to be true? Will the people of this world abide by the rules? Do they have a punishment in place for those who don't? How successful can it be if The Thunderhead controls some aspects and The Scythes control others, yet they can not communicate with other for beneficiary info? Will the new fierce Scythe be able to get them where there need to be? Will the vilgilante of The Scythes scare them to be exactly what they are called to be?Anastasia and Lucifer knows it's some wrong doing among them and they will stop at nothing to bring everyone to justice. Two newbies brought into The Scythes lives that were trained by some of the best is now a force to be reckoned with!I know a book 3 has to be in the making and I am so ready for it!5*

The State and the Stork: The Population Debate and Policy Making in US History, by Derek S. Hoff

Review

“After decades of failed efforts by the scientific community to alert the public to the environmental dangers of population growth and overpopulation, a first-rate historian has finally detailed both the arguments and their policy implications. Derek S. Hoff has taken a comprehensive look at the debates in the United States between those who realize as Malthus did that the growing population will sooner or later outstrip Earth's capacity to support people and those who imagine that there are no limits to that growth. Everyone interested in population should read The State and the Stork. This is an incredibly timely book.” (Paul R. Ehrlich Author of The Population Bomb and The Dominant Animal ) “Derek Hoff has taken an important, complicated topic and traced it over the whole of American history. The research on display here is striking in its breadth and depth, Hoff’s insights are penetrating, and his interpretation is original. The State and the Stork is a solid piece of scholarship.” (Robert Collins University of Missouri ) “The State and the Stork takes up an enduring but often ignored question in modern American political history. How precisely have debates concerning the dynamics of population expansion affected the development of modern public policy and statecraft in the American experience? Strangely enough, there has been little in the way of recent scholarship that directly addresses this query—nor has there been a genuine effort to construct a narrative that spans the entirety of American history and squarely confronts it. It is this gap in the literature that Derek S. Hoff fills in a significant and original fashion (Michael A. Bernstein Tulane University )"Derek Hoff writes with subtlety and nuance and he makes a major contribution to our understanding of the public policies of the Great Society and Richard M. Nixon years by introducing the variable of population into the discussion. . . . A careful reading of this book will reward readers with many new insights into the course of modern American history. It demonstrates the author's considerable talents in the fields of intellectual, policy, and political history."(Edward D. Berkowitz Journal of American History)In his excellent book The State and the Stork, Derek Hoff examines the ways in which economists, demographers, social scientists and politicians in the US have traced patterns in Malthus’ domain. Hoff’s is an elegant clarion call to demographic arms, and . . . an assured guide through two centuries of Malthusian wrangling."(Robert J. Mayhew Times Higher Education)[Hoff's] meticulous archival research adds considerably to our knowledge of the machinations that lay behind President Richard Nixon's decision to establish a Presidential Commission on Population and America's Future and his subsequent disavowal of its findings. He does a similarly excellent job tracing the economic and environmental thought that led to the rise of Zero Population Growth as a significant policy movement and the subsequent changes in that thinking which led to its declining policy relevance . . . Hoff has done a real service by bringing to the foreground the economic dimension of US debates over population size and growth, a topic that has been relegated to the shadows for too long."(Population and Development Review)[Hoff's] survey has remarkable breadth, relating hundreds of thinkers' ideas to the shifting center of opinion and terms of the debate about whether rising population will lead to a declining standard of living (pessimistic Malthusianim) or spur improvements. . . . Highly Recommended [three stars]."(Choice)

America has needed a book like this for a long time. Hoff's injects the grim reality of natural limits to population growth into the prevailing American exceptionalists' vision of unlimited abundance, eternal economic and population expansion, and faith in technological solutions to the resulting environmental damages. As he notes, both strands -- Malthusian limits and American exceptionalism -- have long competed in American social thought and political economy. At this stage, and for the last four decades, what he calls "Market Knows Best Demography," a neoliberal faith rooted in conservative laissez faire economics remains the offcial secular religion. But enduring recession in the western world, climate change, peak oil and world food shortages are mounting a challenge to that faith as never before. Hoff is at his best in describing how the triumph of conservative culture with laissez faire economic thought embodied in the Nixon administration overcame neo-malthusians' effort to officially commit the U.S. to population stability in the 1970-72 Rockefeller Commission on "Population and the American Future."Americans, without government direction, have brought their fertility down below replacement. But births forgone have been nulified by high and rising immigration, which could account for as much as 80 percent U. S. population growth (if immigrants' children are considered) betweeb 2000 and mid-century. Hoff's otherwise exhaustive work gives insufficient analysis and recognition to the immigration factor, at times suggesting that those who raise the immigration issue at all are suspected as crypto eugenecists or racists. Those recognizing limits to growth need his guidance and wisdom as to how our greatest population growth factor can be raised and debated with acceptable politcal correctness.Even so he has performed a major public service in detailing the ideologies in competion in determining how we got where we are, growing from a quarter million in 1700 to over 300 million now, to over 425 million by 2050, and to -- who knows? -- to nearly 600 million by the beginning of the next century. As it now stands, somehow the mysterious "market" will be left to decide that fateful outcome.

Excellent and balanced account of a host of critical issues, from family planning to immigration, that will play a large role in determining how bloody the 21s century will be.

As a person who spent many hours writing what was probably the first chronological history of the population movement in the U.S. ([...] I was delighted to find out this much more detailed book had recently been written. Having spent many hours researching and compiling that simple history it is hard for me to imagine how much time Derek must have spent writing this book. It is really amazing.I was kind of disappointed that the book kind of ends in the seventies when the population movement peaked but a lot has also happened since then and I hope that some time, if he still has the energy left, he'll do the last few decades. It is always extremely important to know where we have been to know why we are at the place we are today.Unfortunately younger people today don't know how active the movement was in the 60's and 70's nor can they appreciate how much the environment has been trashed because they don't know what they missed. As just one example of the activism then, the Chittenden County, Vermont, Chapter of ZPG organized a dramatic action to take over 300 people to the tiny Sloop Island in Lake Champlain to demonstrate how crowded the earth would become if the population kept on growing. A remarkable photo of that is also in the history section of Vermonters for Sustainable Population web site. Their prediction certainly proved true.Thank you Derek as a younger man for your great effort in getting this important book published.

While this book contains a wealth of information, it falls well short of a good recommendation. Let's cite some of the ways. It inexcusably fails to discuss the Nixon/Ford administration's important 1975 National Security Memorandum 200 report, except in a tiny obscure footnote. It fails to even mention the Helms and Hyde amendments that block serious efforts to implement the recommendations of the NSSM 200 report and help reduce the threat of world overpopulation. It fails to adequately deal with women's rights of conscience and religious liberty on abortion. It fails to deal at all adequately with what we know about anthropogenic climate change and such concomitants as atmospheric CO2 and methane buildup, rising sea levels, melting glaciers and Greenland and Antarctic ice, deforestation, desertification, overuse of both renewable and nonrenewable resources, soil erosion and nutrient loss, toxic waste accumulation, shrinking biodiversity, and the relationship of all that to human overpopulation. It fails to even mention Al Gore's important bestselling book on overpopulation. It fails to discuss the effective and fanatic opposition to contraception and abortion by religious leaders (Catholic, evangelical, Orthodox Jewish, Muslim, etc.). It fails to discuss the climate change denial movement. It fails to mention the controversy over use of quinocrin for non-surgical sterilization to help contain overpopulation. These deficiences are inexcusable. -- Edd Doerr

This story is compelling and at times the narative and descriptions are entertaining, but there are some jolts such as when the reader learns Nikki's parents were killed when she was a child and left her with so much guilt. Gag me. I groaned again when Nikki surrendered to bad guys rather than shoot them when she had them out gunned, simply because they showed a picture of her brother. The dialogue in the fight scenes was sometimes unrealistic. The quality is not up to the $14.99 price of a Kindle edition if compared to Lee Child, John Sanford or Michael Connelly.

Every once in a while, I encounter a book that I want to digest slowly. Not skimming, not racing through - just absorbing and enjoying every word and sentence. This is one of those books! The writing is impeccable and enveloping. It is action-packed, exciting, and engrossing. I really felt invited into Nikki’s interesting world and was so happy to finally read a novel with a strong and courageous female protagonist. As a woman, I have been disappointed with the dearth of powerful “I don’t give a dang” female characters. All we have is literature like “Sex and the City” and “Eat, Pray, Love,” where the main characters need to rely on constant male validation for success. This is NOT one of those familiar tales! Nikki Griffin is a worldly, smart, and physically tough woman who is fighting injustice and unraveling conspiracies at the highest level.I look forward to the next installment in the Nikki Griffin saga!

I read the whole thing in two days and found myself gasping out loud at certain points. Such a page turner! I also love that it’s set in the Bay Area. So many cool descriptions of Berkeley, Oakland, Mendocino and Silicon Valley.I’m already looking forward to the sequel.

I enjoyed the female lead.Author hooked me early.I will look for book 2

Some straight Arya Stark stuff. Can definitely see in a movie.

I honestly don't know what I liked best about Nikki Griffin- her investigative skills, her smarts, her work on behalf of abused women, her love for her brother, or her deep knowledge of and love for books. Nikki is hired by a tech guy to find out who one of his employees, Karen Li, is selling info to. Frankly, the answer (and its outcome) was less interesting to me than how Nikki worked out what was happening to Karen and then to herself. The novel is interspersed with Nikki's sessions with an unnamed therapist; the reasons for this mandatory treatment doesn't come out for a long time and not in the doctor's office. Nikki's a tough, determined woman who has no fear of physical violence, which she is very good at dishing out. Her love interest, Ethan, is nicely drawn (I admit I wasn't certain about him for a while). How can a reader not love a book where the protagonist recommends books to others? She picked out one for a customer that I want to read. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. She's tough, she's seeking justice, and she's a darn cool new heroine- and I'm really looking foward to the next one.

A great story with a no-nonsense lead character. Nikki's toughness is proven to the reader within the first few pages. Not being sure where the book is headed from here, I was almost hesitant to continue... DO NOT hesitate! This is an absolutely excellent read. And, yes, Nikki is tough - however she solidly believes in the old adage. "an eye for an eye". Strong characters (a few unlikeable. of course!) help to lead the way in this story Yes, we find that Nikki has a heart but is tough when need be. As the story moves on, we find out about Nikki and her brother's parents and the problems they faced when they were very young.I hope that S. A. Lelchuk has a sequel, soon - I will be thrilled to read it!Hats off to a brilliant writer and a superb read!!!Many thanks to Flatiron Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this winner!

Nikki Griffin isn't your typical private investigator. In her office above her bookstore’s shelves and stacks, where she luxuriates in books and the comfort they provide, she also tracks certain men. Dangerous men. Men who have hurt the women they claim to love. And Nikki likes to teach those men a lesson, to teach them what it feels like to be hurt and helpless, so she can be sure that their victims are safe from them forever.I feel like this is the female version of the Jack Reacher books, which I love, so this was a quick read for me! I loved the writing style of S. A. Lelchuk, it was such an intense read. Thanks to #NetGalley for the ARC!Pub Date: 19 Mar 2019

The Most of Nora Ephron, by Nora Ephron

From Publishers Weekly

This posthumous collection celebrates Ephron's talent for turning her experiences into material, no matter the medium. Organized by occupation (The Journalist, The Advocate, The Foodie, The Blogger, and others), the volume contains numerous classics: her novel Heartburn; the screenplay to When Harry Met Sally; and wry essays on aging that made her collections, I Feel Bad About My Neck and I Remember Nothing, bestsellers. Ephron's last work, Lucky Guy, a play about the career of New York tabloid journalist Mike McAlary, is published here for the first time. The book's most delicious offering is Ephron's magazine journalism from the 1970s, with razor-sharp profiles of figures such as Helen Gurley Brown, Dorothy Schiff, and Julie Nixon Eisenhower, and keenly intelligent reportage on subjects that include the 1971 National Women's Political Caucus and the 1973 Pillsbury Bake-off competition. From Ephron's days as a reporter at Newsweek in the 1960s to blogging for the Huffington Post in the 2000s, the book documents the changing culture of the New York media world. Everything is copy, Ephron's mother always said. This collection fulfills that motto with aplomb, and will likely serve as a perfect holiday gift for Ephron fans. Agent: Amanda Urban, ICM. (Nov.)

From Booklist

Nora Ephron (1941–2012) was an exceptionally smart, funny, and caring journalist, essayist, novelist, playwright, screenwriter, blogger, producer, and director. Her last two books, I Remember Nothing and Other Reflections (2010) and I Feel Bad about My Neck (2006), were best-sellers; her films include Silkwood, Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, and Julie & Julia. No matter how versed in Ephron’s cherished work a reader may be, she or he will be dazzled and touched anew by this life-spanning, life-embracing collection that so richly showcases her clarity, brio, and candor. Mining her own intriguing life in Beverly Hills and New York, Ephron wrote about what it means to be female, from her hilarious “A Few Words about Breasts” in 1972 to her touched-a-nerve laments about marriage, motherhood, age, and persistent sexism. A canny interpreter of the zeitgeist, Ephron threshed topics social, cultural, and political, and shared her passion for food. Nearly 80 stellar essays are accompanied by Ephron’s novel, Heartburn; her play, Lucky Guy, and her acclaimed, oft-quoted screenplay for When Harry Met Sally. A tonic and essential celebration of a scintillating and mighty writer. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Ephron’s bereft readership will embrace this robust, strongly promoted tribute to her incandescent talent and intensely creative life. --Donna Seaman

Doesn't much matter which of those 557 pages fall open. Wherever you land you should find a good read. Here's a sampling: There's Nora, the thrice married New Yorker daughter of Hollywood screenwriters. Nora of 1960's Newsweek, when the only jobs open to women were in the mailroom. Nora, the New York Post journalist, novelist, filmmaker and playwright. Nora sitting around with Rob Reiner dithering with improving the script of "When Harry Met Sally." Nora settling scores with her unfaithful second husband in "Heartburn," the book that became a Meryl Streep movie. Nora as writer/director of "You've Got Mail" and "Sleepless in Seattle." Nora, the foodie, on having people to dinner and life in the land of the egg-white omelette. And the Nora who knew early on who Deep Throat was, but nobody believed her. Nora and her profiles of Helen Gurley Brown, Julie Nixon Eisenhower and other well known women. Nora on life in the Google years. Nora on the "O" word and remembering nothing. Nora's script of "Lucky Guy," her 2-act play that ran on Broadway, starring Tom Hanks, in 2013. Nora's "Story of My Life in 3,500 Words or Less" and two one-page lists of "What I Won't Miss" and "What I Will Miss." Nora Ephron died of leukemia at 71 in June, 2012.

I have been a long time Nora Ephron fan, having read several of her shorter works, read screenplays and watched movies and this compilation of Ephron's work is a way to immerse myself in her brilliant, biting, insightful, sharp witted and intelligent writing. I enjoyed work I hadn't read before and revelled in re-reading favorites. She was such a creative and wide ranging talent- this collection is a treasure for me to dip into and reflect upon, laugh over and be surprised anew by her breadth of knowledge.

Nora Ephron is funny. Because she seeks the truth, after I've stopped laughing, I find myself oddly, deeply affected and a bit teared up. She left us too soon, so I'm glad I got this great, big fat compendium of her work from the many facets of her life--newspaper and magazine journalist, epic foodie, novelist, screenwriter, playwright. Somehow her love of eating and cooking works its way into a lot of what she's written as a novelist, screenwriter, and journalist. Her confiding tone makes her feel like a girlfriend, someone I stay in touch with long after moving on from the school or job where we first met.The Most of Nora Ephron gives me the opportunity to revisit Ephron's wit and warmth again and again.

This splendid collection of Nora Ephron's work should be read by every woman in America, and MOST men. Readers are not meant to read it straight through, but sample it as one would a box of chocolates. However, I read it over my Christmas vacation in one fell swoop, hating to put it down. Nora Ephron's death brought out a spasm of national mourning, and reading her work again, one can see why. She is often compared to Dorothy Parker, but it's a false analogy. Parker was cold at the heart; Ephron was warm and human all the way through. Read this!

I bought this as a gift for a bookworm friend of mine and she loved it. It is bulky and a bit heavy, but, it's beautifully written. Not a gift for posting but perfect to give to someone in-person who loves clever, witty, intelligent penmanship.

What more is there to say, other than that? Really. Sheer pleasure to read. This is the 2nd time Amazon has asked me this question, BTW. Please stop!

Nora Ephron was one of the funniest and best writers we have seen in a long time. No one had her keen sense of humor and ability to say something in her own original way. This book is a wonderful collection of Nora's work, and since there will be no more from her, it is to be treasured and read over and over. She was indeed a national treasure. Rest in peace, Nora, you made us laugh and you told it like it was.

Just can't get enough about the late Nora Ephron. Anyone who loves her films and books will love to hear how her process worked and how sensitive and loving she really was!

"The Copyeditor's Handbook" is book is a life-saver! I'm studying to be an editor and it's not always easy to understand what is known as 'the' editor's bible: the Chicago Manual of Style. This book, however, simplifies and explains so many rules that CMS does not elaborate on, allowing the reader to breathe a little easier as a result. I highly recommend this to writers, authors, editors, and pretty much anyone who is in love with the written word and could use a friendlier reference manual.

It's terrific and you will need it. Don't scrimp and buy cheaper books on copyediting because I have and I find bad advice and even numerous mistakes in them. This book is one of the few that doesn't rhapsodize Strunk & White, which I'm tired of after all these years. If I had any advice for Ms. Einsohn, it'd be to update some of the examples, even if it's just a question of changing the year to reflect that we're now in the 21st century, and to replace the chapter on typecoding (c'mon, did any of you really read that?) with one on copyediting for the Web, which has it's own rules and idiosyncrasies and is where a huge amount of writing is now. Einsohn is good about reminding copyeditors to be diplomatic when suggesting changes, something not all of us do naturally.Reading this book twice or more is a good idea.** Right after I wrote this I did a search for Einsohn and learned that she died in February of 2014, at age 61. She will be one of the rare few who writes a technical book about a trade yet be remembered with warmth only for that. Reading it is like having coffee with the smartest friend you have and listening while she gives you invaluable advice. I hope the book will continue to be updated and revised by someone able to maintain Ms. Einsohn's high level. **

This is a really great guide. I got offered a copyediting job, which I had never done before, and kind of freaked out. My friend, a professional copyeditor, recommended this book. With focused study, I was able to teach myself to copyedit well enough to get paid to do. Now the company that hired me has me copyedit all of their publications. The book has exercises for practice. I did them in pencil so I could do them more than once. The way the book is organized is a little weird, making it slightly difficult to use as a reference. Nonetheless, I do reach for it time and time again while I'm copyediting. I recommend flagging the pages with grammatical concepts that you often need to review.

Not just a book for editors! Oh, not at all!Every writer, from newbies to NY Times bestsellers would benefit from this handy text.It give very clear guidelines on how to price yourself as an editor, along with levels of editing and descriptions of the different kinds of editors on different publications. Any budding editor will know what to expect from their career choice. As for writers, the book has a great collection of grammar, punctuation, and spelling guidelines, which are all presented in an easy-to-understand format. Follow these guidelines, and your editor will praise you as a Literary Deity. Or, at least, give you a heartfelt "thank you."

I wish I had read this when I was still working at a publishing house, but now that I am freelancing full-time, I'm beefing up my skills with an online class that uses "The Copyeditor's Handbook" as the main textbook. It's excellent. I find the book to be informative and the author to be flexible about editorial situations that often come down to a judgment call.Einsohn has pored through many books about writing and editing order to put today's editorial questions into context, and her brief discussions of our evolving language are quite interesting. Sometimes, we find that something we have been taught is a no-no (like ending sentences with prepositions) has actually been done successfully for many years. There are helpful exercises throughout so readers can test themselves on the concepts being presented, a glossary of grammar terms and one of copyediting terms, careful explanations about typecoding for people who still edit on paper, and discussions of some of the finer relational questions about copyediting. (For example, when does a copyeditor cross the line from helpful changes to unwarranted interventions?) No editor should be without this guide.

I love this book. I'm a writer, not a copyeditor. This text helped me understand what I need to work on, and how a copyeditor works. It also goes through the various steps in book publishing in great detail, which is very useful. In the past, I worked for two major publishers and can attest that the information is very accurate.

I was reluctant to order this as it is expensive, but I have not stopped using it since it arrived. I was sorry that I waited! This book is worth its weight in gold, and in advice. It is timely, easy to use, helpful, well-written, and a great supplement to CMA, Garner's, and any other reference you may be using. I love it!

I had done some proofreading and editing, but not at a career, and so learned a whole lot from this book. The examples and exercises were very beneficial to me. I liked how this book made the distinction between what were fixed rules and what were only matters of opinion or preference. The one thing that I found a little funny was on page 406. In the section about bias-free language and explaining that we should not assume that all pioneers or rock musicians are men, the very next page then urges caution when using sports metaphors, because they may "make some women feel that they are not part of the intended audience." That to me is funny! In the section about bias-free language, the author seems to tell us that only men can understand sports metaphors. Rather than saying that those who do not follow sports may not understand sports metaphors, the author specifically says that the reason to be careful is that some women may not understand sports metaphors. Other than that, I thought that the book was very helpful and I am glad that I read it.

I really enjoyed Pandemic. As with all his books, the plot has been carefully researched. I love how the book thoughtfully combines a work of fiction with real-world threats, and shows how people and governments could potentially react. Riddle has you caring about the characters as well as the world.

I actually started reading this book when I was about half way through the audio book version of Dan Brown's "Inferno"; so these two books will forever be linked to me. Both involve a main character waking up in a strange place with amnesia and a worldwide pandemic looming. They also involve a secret society with the goal of fixing the human race. The big difference, though, is that Mr. Brown knew exactly what kind of novel he was writing from page one... a thriller. I enjoyed "Inferno" much better for its focus. "Pandemic" starts out being a procedural on investigating epidemics. We get a little bit of mystery with Desmund's arc, but it largely sticks with the scientists. Then the story starts delving deeply into Desmund's backstory. It all but abandons the scientists and beers into the thriller aspects. Neither is terribly written, it just feels like we wasted our time getting invested in the medical staff. If this book would have shaved off 200 pages and focused one one or the other, it would have been a lot better. As far as the ending goes, I have to say that I also preferred "Inferno" over this book. The "solution" in that book was much more elegant. It handles one major aspect of humanity permanently. "Pandemic" was very convoluted and required too many moving parts.

Do you like excellent writing?Do you enjoy the feeling of being unable to put a book down? This is the book for you!A.G. Riddle is a phenomenal writer. His Atlantis series blew me out of the water. Now, he is back and better than ever.Imagine a virus spreading like Wildfire with no end in sight. What would you do? Where would you go? How would you fight?Riddle takes a fictional scenario, deeply roots it in science and real-world research, and molds the two to create a thriller unlike any other. What makes the story truly gripping is how real it feels; the research that has gone into this book shows what would happen during an outbreak. It's got a great story and has compelling characters; no cliches or boring, flat dimensional characters here.Prepare yourself for a wild ride from start to finish, and if you're anything like me, you'll be gasping for more as you turn the last page.

If you haven't read any of his books, this is a good starting point. He takes well researched facts and blends them into a riveting read that you can't put down. This book is based around a mysterious disease outbreak in Kenya and then worldwide, developing into a very believable conspiracy. A great insight into the work of the CDC in the USA. Get it. Read it, u won't be disappointed.

The first third of this book was great, but by the second half of the book, the author lost me. The story starts out with a pandemic that threatens the world. But by the second half, we're into a world wide conspiracy with secret islands, submarines, and a mysterious machine (or whatever it is) that will save humanity. If you could accept all the weirdness in the TV show, Lost, then you'll probably love this book. But I am done. I gave up reading it 70% through.

While I read more than I used to, I'm not a regular consumer of fiction / series. So when I saw how long this book is, I feared maybe I had gotten in over my head — in the sense it might take me a month or more to finish it (which never has the same effect). I finished this book in about four days! That is testament to the interesting nature of the suspense the author creates, and to some of the character development as well. I don't know how long the second book will be but I am already looking forward to it.WHAT I LIKED MOST• The development of the main character, Desmond — seeing both sides of him from a young age and having to guess at what role he played in the whole thing. The memory aspect was pretty ingenious.• The overall plot and scenario — I don't know how many thrillers / suspense novels about epidemics or pandemics there are out there but this was my first forray into the topic and I feel it is both relevant in the times we live and interesting generally. You could tell in places the author did his homework; the details didn't feel fudged.• The storyline for the African doctor, Kibet. I'm glad the story didn't leave him behind as the activities in Africa became secondary. He is interesting.• The fact that the author obviously did some homework on how the CDC operates and on some real-world diseases and their impact. Made it a lot more authentic.MINOR DISTRACTIONS• In the first maybe 100 pages of the book, characters' hair color / qualities were described a lot and in Peyton's case, the color changed back and forth 4 or 5 times. First brown, then black, then dark brown, then black again, then brown again. lol I attribute this more to the editor of the book than the author — they should've caught it, synced a couple and and removed a couple of the references to avoid the distraction.MINOR CHARACTER / PLOT FLAWS*** SPOILER ALERT ***• The components of the Looking Glass (which I understand has to remain mysterious in its own right), were mentioned often in the second half of the book, with virtually no hint as to what role those components played / why they were important. Rook, Rendition, etc. While it's OK to leave readers in the dark initially to build suspense, towards the end of the book when clues and characters are coming together to paint a picture, I think more detail about what those inidividual pieces meant, would've been helpful.• Too many characters back from the dead and/or doing the whole "not who you think they are" bit: Peyton's Dad, Peyton's Brother, Peyton's Mom. I find it hard to believe on some level, that for all those years she never suspected any of it nor was dropped any hint about it by anyone involved. It felt a little forced and a bit like a TV drama or something where they have to keep hitting you over the head with "mind blowing moments" to cover up the fact that half the actors can't act and the script writers can't write. Obviously that's not WHY it was done here (there are no actors and the author is quite talented at weaving a story and painting a picture), but I do feel like it was over the top. I also find it almost impossible to believe that her brother, once the island was captured and overrun by US military, would simply be allowed to leave unquestioned and go start a life in Australia.• Unlike the Aftrican doctor, I felt like the continuation of Elliot's story in Atlanta left something to be desired. Maybe it lacked a thematic focus or — not sure. I actually would've preferred that part of the story be told from the perspective of someone totally unconnected to the CDC or the people involved in all things Looking Glass. Like John and Jane Q Public and their kid and their dog... some type of terrors or tribulations they had to go through, somewhere not so lucky where there's no Georgia Dome or CDC, more chaos maybe. People panicking and turning on their neighbors, etc (which I believe would happen in real life in many places).

Started out great as I am fascinated by how epidemics and pandemics might breakout and attempts to contain. I feel that the later part of the book fell apart with too many attempts at surprise. And plausibly. how does a Red Cross plane seemingly make a trip from the Shetland Islands to central Asia then to Australia seemingly within hours, as though the reader has no sense of the logistics and time it would take to fly such distances. I quit reading the book at 91 percent read.
