This book is not an answer to someone who has doubts, unless you have them read 20+ pages for any given passage, the explanations are far too long.More importantly, most of them do not use scriptural references to defend certain points. A large majority of the authors answers boiled down to "it's much better than the nations surrounding Israel!"The absolute worst aspect of this book was done of the worst "logic" I've read on the subject. In regarding Sodom and Gomorrah, the author asked "Considering they were homosexuals, you have to wonder just how many children were actually in the city?" And another "Considering they sacraficed children to false gods, you have to wonder just how many children were actually in the city?"Both arguments are very poorly thought out and in bad taste. They are very unlikely to convince anyone and far more likely to disgust someone against a Christian. For the first, it's very likely that they were sexually depraved toward all genders, afterall Lot did offer them his daughters, not his sons or son-in-laws. He would not have done this if the city was only known for its homosexuality. For the second, in order to offer child sacrafices, you need to have children... Most likely the rituals were something like offering firstborns, a way to increase fertility. Not every child born. It's arguments like these that make this a very poor choice of you want to help someone see through challenging topics in the old testament.I give this 2 stars because toward the end of the book, the author does have a couple meaningful insights into Israelite slavery issues. But I don't know if it's worth purchasing to get to them.Instead, I highly recommend "The Bible Project" on YouTube or their website. They do a fantastic job of bringing new insight to various themes, topics, and books. Including issues with some of the old testament passages. I can't recommend their work enough.

This is a really good book. Copan does a great job handling the assaults of the New Atheists and working through difficult texts of the Old Testament (including the so-called terror texts). Copan deals with slavery, the Bible's treatment of women, holy war, and several other topics that often give Christians (and atheists!) problems. While I gave the book 5 stars for its basic excellence, there are a number of minor points I would raise questions about had I the time or were I myself a better scholar. I'll just mention two.Copan frequently resorts to the language of exaggeration in his dealing with OT texts. Scripture certainly does use hyperbole in places, but I'm not convinced that it does so as often as Copan suggests. Sometimes this appears to be an argument of convenience.Copan also goes in several directions regarding the Conquest that I felt were sort of weak, such as giving credence to the Infiltration theory of the Conquest. The account in the Bible of the crossing of the Red Sea and of the Jordan, in my view, pretty much vitiates the Infiltration theory. Both speak of sudden mass movements, and Joshua speaks of a sudden overthrow of the Canaanite dominance of the Promised Land. The fact that Canaanites continued to live in Canaan after the Conquest does not change the basic facts. Copan's resort to studying some of the various Hebrew words surrounding Israelite warfare merely opened the possibility for his interpretations (words do, after all, possess a semantic range), but certainly did not demand (or even suggest) his interpretations. Copan seems to acknowledge this in places with several "even if" statements.Anyway, the book is excellent. All the chapters are good; the final chapter is outstanding. Well documented, well argued, this is certainly a book that should find a place on your apologetics shelf.

This is not an argument. It's a very long, very painful and tortured rationalization. God didn't commit genocide because the Bible says God is good and if he DID commit genocide, then the people he did it to deserved it (because reasons) and at that point is it really the bad-thing version of genocide? This is the kind of thinking that makes Christians morally unreliable and sears their consciences until they're willing to vote in an authoritarian fascist if God says it's okay. It is the exact opposite of morality; it's arguing why you don't need to use your own moral compass if God tells you not to, even to the point of murder. A disgusting display of special pleading whose horrible moral impact the author can't possibly have thought through to its logical conclusion. In defending the Bible agains charges of evil, he has made evil a nonexistent consideration, compared to obeying what the literalists claim the Bible teaches. This way lies more genocide.

This book address the new atheists' arguments head on, and it's dead on. Copan's writing is clear, lucid, and readable. He has divided up chapters into a handful of pages (thought the font is rather small), so each "question" or "argument" is addressed quickly yet sufficiently. The title of the book, "Is God a Moral Monster?" obviously is a rhetorical question. No, He isn't. But, why do new atheists frame God as such a being? In a nutshell, because they use out-of-context phrases, expressions, and impressions from the Bible. With Copan's further explanation on cultural backgrounds, context of events, and linguistic nuances, readers are able to grasp the deeper and more caring heart of God the Father.I have not finished reading the book, bur the first 9 chapters or so have been satisfying. A good book for those who know the short answer to the question, but who need more detail and, thus, confidence/evidence.

I was hoping for a much creepier story. While this was still a good story and written in an interesting format, it wasn’t what I was hoping it would be. I was looking for a horror book filled with slender man.

I read this after watching the movie. Eerie stuff! I highly recommend. Hoping for a sequel! Good read! Was able to put myself in Matt's shoes.

A solid 4 StarsSlender Man is a creepypasta/urban legend horror figure that may have origins in folklore. He's a spooky character who appears in forested areas (even those in urban settings) and who snatches children or young people. He is very tall, very thin, faceless, and has long arms that have been described by those unfortunate enough to have seen him as tentacle-like. Paying too much attention to Slender Man, whether talking about him, or trying to photoshop photos that look like he's in them, can attract his attention, drawing him near you. You really don't want him near you. Hence, if you're brazen enough to write a book titled Slender Man, it's probably better to do it anonymously. It will make it harder for him to find you.Slender Man the novel is the tale of Matt Barker and his friend Lauren Bailey. Matt and Lauren have been friends since childhood and in that teen way, though they're close enough to be texting each other all the time, even though they are in the same high school (The Riley School) they don't really hang out. Lauren is quite popular and Matt is more low key. Their parents have been close for many years because their mothers were in grad school together. Lauren is a supportive beta reader for Matt's writing and encourages him to take the prospects of studying writing in college more seriously. Matt feels for Lauren because her dad, a well known gynecologist, is a real cad whose name has been associated with gossip column scandals with supermodels. Matt doesn't ask too many questions but does ask supportive ones. He and Lauren really care for each other. Yet, for all their quiet connectedness, they haven't shared with each other the fact that Matt has been having terrible nightmares for weeks and that Laura has been taking some mighty creepy photographs late at night. Both kids live at swanky Central Park West addresses. Central Park has some pretty nicely forested areas, especially near the reservoir. Funny how Matt has started dreaming about a lake... Funny creepy. He's only shared a bit of his creepy dreams with his friend Jamie, a friend who doesn't even know how close Matt and Lauren really are. Of course he hasn't really talked to his therapist about them... or his parents. And so when Lauren disappears in the middle of the night, one cool March evening, and Matt has his worst yet nightmare at that exact moment, you know things are about to get pretty scary. Matt gets frustrated with the lack of progress in Lauren's missing persons case and tries to investigate Lauren's disappearance on his own, with a bit of help and encouragement from a mysterious online friend, Ryan, who warns him again and again to... Be Careful.Told in what I call the "modern epistolary format," with emails and text message exchanges and reddit threads, Slender Man tells a genuinely creepy story that is a perfectly scary YA Halloween read.A bit of research shows that the true author of this book might be YA author Will Hill. But I wouldn't be surprised if he won't own it. After all... there are forests pretty much everywhere.Thank you HarperCollins! I received a paper review copy of this book from Harper Voyager in exchange for an honest review.

From the dark corners of the internet to the eerie depths of the forest, the boogeyman lurks. An odd collection of elongated limbs in black and white, an oval-shaped head, and a lurking, a following, a stalking. The Slender Man.Mark is a young man of monied Manhattan, enrolled in an elite private high school that is rife with gossip, and troubled by insomnia-inducing nightmares. He tries his hand at writing grimdark fiction and shares it on a creative writing sub. But when aspects of his stories start to manifest themselves in dreams and realities, Mark gets chills… and it all comes to a head when his friend Lauren goes missing. Who took her? Was it the Slender Man?This story is an epistolary novel told through journal entries, audio transcriptions (police interviews and voice apps), therapist notes, Reddit subs, texts messages, and DMs. These bite-sized clues, along with some time shifting, offer the reader a terrific puzzle, and create a pacing that is surprisingly quick. Two massive reveals in the end make for a great finish. The story may have a little more spook and thrill than scare, but it is one that is definitely recommended. A Halloween-perfect book that looks at teenage friendships, the anonymity of the internet, and an urban myth that continues to unnerve and affright.Thank you to Edelweiss, Harper Voyager, and our nameless author for the advanced copy of the book.

High school student, Matt is plagued by nightmares. So much so that his parents insists that he sees a therapist. Then his schoolmate and close friend, Lauren goes missing. Then the nightmares increase and pieces of a story that lines up with what is really happening begins appearing on his computer. In a nutshell this is what the story is about. A boy who has heard and read about the Slender Man stories, but does not believe in the man itself. I have not read any of the Slender Man fiction, and I'm not really sure what the legend around him is. And you don't really need to for this story. There was an ebb and flow rhythm to this story, its written using Matt's journal entries and the transcripts from police interviews and online chats. Because of that, it was a pretty quick read. It is not explained why Matt is seeing a therapist, other than the fact that he is having nightmares. Even in his journal entries Matt does not talk about what the nightmares are - until they shift into what he believes is communication from slender man. The nightmares convince him that he has to do something to rescue his friend Lauren. Overall, this was just an okay read for me. There were parts that were creepy and unsettling. But for the most part, it is a nice book for those who aren't into being scared to death. I did have a couple of problems with the story itself. One being the newspaper articles that are sprinkled throughout the book. As the media is covering Lauren's case as the missing teen, the reporter sounds more interest in her dad- the gynecologist to the stars, and his infidelities. Also there were a few references to her being a "pretty blond" like that was vitally important information. Another issue is that while the therapist makes it clear that there is nothing seriously wrong with Matt -his nightmares are supposedly stress related - it is never really clear if he is completely sane during this whole event. The ending is another issue, it could have been better. Or maybe I was expecting something different. While I did not enjoy it as much as I was hoping (I was looking for a good and scary Halloween book), I still enjoyed it. All in all it's a good Halloween book for scaredy-cats :)If this sounds like something you would want to check out (it's worth it) you're in luck, it released today!Always Shine!

When I saw Romeo & Juliet in the theatre -- on its opening weekend -- after the film in the lobby I saw dozens of teenaged girls sobbing in each other's arms. I've never seen anything like that before or since. That alone marks the film as a masterpiece, and nothing any critic can say is relevant next to that emotional reaction. Those sobbing teenagers are absolute proof that any critic who panned this film is a fool.Di'Caprio wasn't very famous at that point (though I believe he'd already been nominated for an oscar for an indy film). Later that night, I had dinner with friends and predicted that this boy would become the biggest star in Hollywood -- by tomorrow! I was off by a couple of years. Rare in film history has there been such a perfect casting -- Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo. The mythical balcony scene is freshly designed and executed wonderfully, bringing the myth to life before our eyes. But the crowning glory and superpower of this film is the 'love at first sight' scene - ironic in that there are no words spoken (words being Shakespeare's superpower). It's all done with the eyes by the two young genius actors, combined with inspired camera work and the devastating vocal performance of Des'ree. This is one of the most beautiful, greatest, and most powerful scenes in cinematic history. What is this emotion -- love at first sight? It might only happen two or three times in our entire lives. It isn't real love. So is it just trivial, adolescent silliness? I think it is much more than that -- and so did Shakespeare. What is our emotional relationship with our desires that can never be? We're haunted forever by the impossiblity of perfect love as much as we were ever thrilled by the fantasy of it. Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo & Juliet' taps deeply into the impossible longings that never leave us. It is a masterpiece.

As an English teacher, teaching Shakespeare can be quite a challenge. For modern students, trying to connect the concepts, theme, and setting of Romeo and Juliet can be quite a challenge. Keeping them engaged in the struggle of Shakespearean language is even more so. This version of the play is accurate and most importantly, entertaining. We, as a class, will read a portion of the play and then I will show this film to help cement ideas, dialogue, and characters. The students love the film, laugh, and respond better to the play than without!

I did not want to see this movie for years after its release. I consider myself a purist where the Bard of Avon is concerned. I adored the films Henry V & Much Ado About Nothing, both directed and starring Kenneth Branaugh, Richard III starring and directed by Olivier. Period costumes, true to Shakespeare's lines, etc. I began to change when I realized (fairly early on in watching it) that 10 Things I Hate About You, was a delightful retelling of The Taming Of The Shrew. Eventually I watched this and found a gem. From the factions portrayed as rival gangs, to the outstanding delivery of the lines. The true crowning jewel is the over the top performance by the inimitable John Leguizamo. As Tibalt, John is amazing.

I really love this book. It made understanding a lot easier for my students. ~BUT~ I will say that some parts are a little much. It seems the translator looks for the most vulgar way to word some of Shakespeare's crude jokes (Shakespeare is crude, to be sure--and some of it is quite funny. However, sometimes the translator goes too far the other way). Plus, there were parts that weren't necessarily as sexual in the original as it was presented in the translated version (like scenes that were purposely left ambiguous so that it might have been interpreted in more than one way). This actually took away from the cleverness and thoughtfulness of some of Shakespeare's jokes.Because of this, I had to pre-read all the scenes to choose which scenes we read in this book, and which ones we read from the original text (from the textbook, where students couldn't read the translation). I did find, however, that the classes that used BOTH original and translated readings for the unit had an easier time understanding the original text when challenged to do so (likely because they didn't feel as overwhelmed from days of old text). This is a very useful tool for the classroom. Both versions are important--and, truthfully, some of my students preferred the original text, and some preferred the new text, so switching between the two for certain scenes was a great exercise.

This is such a great reimagining of the Shakespearean play. My students love this version and it keeps their attention with the fast-paced plot, colorful scenes, and flashy costumes. However, this edition is the NEW Music edition of the DVD, so there are added bonuses to this new disc. The music edition features a 45 minute documentary of how they picked the songs that were used in the movie. Twenty years after this film came out, my students are still singing along with some of the songs--they were the perfect choices and were timeless songs (and hey, if my students know Prince's "When the Doves Cry" more than 30 years after the song's initial release, yes, it is timeless). My DVD did not look like the photo (the cover is a bit different, although it does say "Music Edition") but I bought it for the movie and not for the cover. If you are a fan of this version of the movie and you don't have the music edition, you need this one. If you're just a Romeo and Juliet fan and have (gasp!) never seen this 1996 version, go ahead and take a chance. You'll love it.

Review

“The Out-of-Sync Child—the best book ever written on Sensory Processing Disorder—has been the salvation of mothers everywhere. This sequel will help them even more.”—Marguerite Kelly, syndicated family columnist and coauthor, The Mother’s Almanac “Having fun isn’t something that just happens for most children with severe sensory issues. Everyday activities can be a struggle and can cause much frustration and sadness for both the child and his/her family. The Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun is a ‘must have’ for parents and teachers. They will start changing lives with these simple ideas that work with ALL children—and many adults, too.”—Laurie Renke, Mother, national coordinator, DSI Parent Connections“Carol opened the eyes and hearts of caregivers with The Out-of-Sync Child, allowing children who were once afraid of movement, who are overly sensitive to noise and touch, to grow and emerge from their cocoons of sensory dysfunction. Now, in The Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun, she gives parents and teachers a cookbook of activities to orchestrate a new hum, a new rhythm and a common vibration to those who once were adrift. This book is like having a therapist whispering in your ear, 'try this now, and this, and now this...’”—Rondalyn V. Whitney, MOT, OTR, author, Bridging the Gap: Raising a Child with Nonverbal Learning Disorder“Oh, the pleasures your children will gleefully enjoy with any one of the activities in this marvelous book. OTs, parents and teachers, get ready to have fun, too, as you get in sync with your out-of-sync child through these important and clinically credible methods of attaining and retaining new life skills.”—Aubrey Lande MS, OTR, vice-president, Occupational Therapy Association of Colorado

My son is 7 1/2 and the activities seem geared for kids around 2-5. He is very sensory seeking but the activities are not stimulating and boring for him. For example, there is an activity to do a shaving cream car wash. This involves squirting shaving cream on a cookie sheet and driving little cars through. Great idea for a three or four year old. A lot of the activities are similar in terms of age. Otherwise has some nice ideas.

This is Ms. Kranowitz's sequel to her book “The Out-of-Sync Child,” and I purchased it shortly after my son was diagnosed with Sensory Modulation Disorder, rated severe back in 2013. This book has a shorter overview of Sensory Processing Disorder related symptoms and concerns, gives some instructional guidance for working these activities effectively, and then goes on to give some ideas for activities to encourage sensory integration in a child with Sensory Processing issues. My most honest opinion is that this is a great resource with a few important caveats that are best illustrated by some of the issues we faced as a family. My son, his sensory issues exploded around 13 months when he became too heavy to continue using the snugly chest sling we carried him in as a baby when out sometimes, and were trying to encourage him to do more walking on his own (while he showed some signs of tactile defensiveness, before then, we think the snugly was keeping him calmer and more regulated, so it wasn't until that disappeared that the true scope of his problems became apparent). Often he went into intense fight or flight mode accompanied by hysterics and meltdowns when faced with any tactile issue. We could never have sat him down at that time to do any of the suggestions in this book and had it be effective in the beginning. Shaving cream, for example, caused him to puke and vomit from both the tactile sense and the smell. So we had to go through a period of trying to desensitize him to it before we could even work him up to trying to paint with it. That looked like two things, one of which was recommended by a developmental specialist at the second clinic he started attending when he was still receiving in home therapy services from them. That was to put it in a bag. Well, he still struggled with that, because of the smell so it didn't go well at first. So I had to find some cool whip and then fruit smelling child bath foam soap that the smell didn't cause puking from and we used that. Then you move up to poking holes in the bag with a toothpick so that a little bit gets on them as they squeeze in the bag.The second phase was an idea of mine that I was only able to do after I got him willing to tolerate a bath. The bath part was important in case we accidentally went too far and proceeded to vomiting, because at that time, the smell of puke upset him also, and he would continue to vomit until he could no longer smell it. So I had to get super fast at cleaning and containment. Water touching his skin made him freak out, and he would fight and try to get out of the tub. But I noticed he was distracted and visually drawn to bright colors, so I got color tablets to put in the bath, and he became so absorbed in those, I was gradually able to get him used to being in the water, which I initially only put a few inches in the tub until he could tolerate more. Then, I would take the foam soap, but some on him, and wipe it off instantly, before he had time to gag. Once he was tolerating that calmly, I slowly moved him up to longer periods of time. This took months. And then, we were able to proceed to that glorious day where we could actually get him to play in this foam on the table. But still not traditional shaving cream at first because of the smell so far as I remember. So, if you have a child with extreme reactions and aversions, the items in this book may not be accessible to you right away, and there isn't really guidance for working through those issues so much, which is where a developmental specialist or an occupational therapist with experience in sensory issues can be a great asset. We also did a great deal of research on-line. Ok, I did, my husband was in grad school and this was pretty much all me and I told him what he needed to know most when it was his watch. Also, if you have a child with serious motor planning issues (again, us) and extreme reactions to motion related activities, many of these activities will also be things you will have to work up to. We are just now being able to work in some of these things. She lists the developmental age for each activity, and I think that's important to pay attention to, because that can certainly be different from actual age, and it matters to have activities that are developmentally appropriate. And knowing where your child is developmentally in specific areas as opposed to the overall average is important. In our house, some of the blowing cotton ball activities, etc. are more difficult, because it requires symbolic play that he doesn't have, no matter what kind of motor skills he's got, so he'd rather just try and eat them.Bearing those things in mind, I think this can still be a great resource, and as we continue our slow march of the developmental ladder, I am thankful to have this to flip through and target new things to try so that we can continue on our journey towards onward and upward with our little man.Edit: This is part of a picture, with my little man's face removed, from the day a couple of years ago when I finally knew we had beaten the foam texture. Right after I took this, he climbed up on the table and rolled in it. And because he couldn't get his shirts off at that time, I made sure he was in shirts with fabrics that didn't distress him, he did best with the under armour shirts because they were smoother at that time.

Great book with lots of ideas. This should be given to all new special ed preschool teachers. If you are a parent of a preschooler that has SPD do not assume teachers are familiar with this book. Please mention it or buy a copy. As for parents - yes it's great for home as well!!!

Ordered copy for my daughter and myself, highly recommended by a friend who is a speech pathologist and worked with children over 25years.Gives good insight into sensory processing disorder and practical help resources.

This book was recommended by my sons speech pathologist when he was 2.5. It helped me augment the services he was already receiving in OT, PT and speech. It helped me understand why we were doing what we were doing at the therapy sessions. It's simple to understand and really helped me understand the sensory system and where my son fell in the different categories.

Whether you are just learning about Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) or you've been living with it for awhile, this book is full of great descriptions to help understand types of SPD. After the description of each type, there is a long list of activities. The best part: a play-by-play chart for the roles you and your child can play when participating in an activity!

I love this book!!! So many great ideas . I loved the original book that this book as a follow on, didn't disappoint! The original book saved my life on many a day when I needed that go to advice for a problem I was experiencing. This new book giving us some ideas on what to do with them is PERFECT! A book every parent of an ASD child should buy

It has several fun, inexpensive activities. Most of the activities you already have laying around your house. They call for things like a water hose, a news paper, tooth picks, etc. Very helpful and economical. I make anyone working with my son read this book first!

This is another "common sense" book, one we shouldn't have to read because we should have everything between the covers dialed in, but for a number of reasons, we don't. The biggest reason, I guess, is that as we go through life, we let ourselves become emotionally affected by life events, and reacting emotionally to emotional situations never turns out well. It's a laundry list of things you should or should not do. You can preview the book and see the contents for yourself. Some are pretty obvious ("Quitting Too Soon," "Letting Others Control Your Life"), while others are more subtle and are probably doing more damage than you realize because they have burrowed so deep ("Acting Too Needy," "Talking When Nobody's Listening").See, the secret is to catch yourself in the act of doing these things and then put in the fix WITHOUT beating yourself up for it.That's how this book can help you. Highly recommended.

The anecdotal nature of the various examples turns off some people. But I found it easy to follow and very relatable. My family and I are going through some major, life-changing, turmoil and even my usually pragmatic husband feels this book was an excellent purchase. By making the examples personal and relatable, the author shows you that each person can handle things in their own way and still attain a good outcome. Sometimes all you need is a nudge, and this book provides nudges in the all the right directions. Not everything will apply to you, but everything is written in an easy to read style that makes none of it come across as preachy or judgmental.

Quick, easy, but insightful read. I've had a lot of light bulb moments while reading. Chapters are very short and concise, but definitely worth the read and a book that you can refer to for many years to come. Great addition to the bookshelf.

Excellent book! If you put yourself down (like me) or like to blame others for what goes wrong in your life this is a must read! It actually helps you to make sense of "why do I do that"! It will help you to get a jump start on how to fix you.

I have given this book to several of my clients and they have told me on more than one occasion how helpful it has been to them, especially the chapter on Procastination. I even had one particular client that would come in and ask me to make copies of it for her family members and another that was reading it with her mother. One has kept it so long that I am going to have to order another. It really helped a lot of them and I am glad I purchased it for that purpose. Regardless of the date of publication, material is still relevant and friendly to all audience demographics.

The book has a lot of psychological insight. Well organized in short chapters with specific themes. Mostly these themes are about convictions that many of us have, the so called "self-limiting beliefs". If you're not familiar with this kind of beliefs, you may learn quite a lot. It's an easy read, and well written.

Great understanding behind our emotions and behaviors without being lengthy and hard to follow. A good reference when you’re overwhelmed by a certain feeling.

I'm not a book reader but this is a great book. I had a bad friendship and I needed to understand why it was going so wrong after 10 yrs. i was able to understand more about myself and others. What to look for and not in a friend.

Growing up in the seventies, I fell in love with Star Trek watching the reruns on TV. Even after the success of Star Wars, I was always a Star Trek guy. Now that it is Star Trek’s 50th anniversary year, the show is getting a lot of attention. Among that attention are two books that claim to be “the complete, uncensored, unauthorized oral history of Star Trek”. This is the first of them.Though this book claims to focus on “the first 25 years”, it cheats a bit. It would more accurately claim to be the book that covers the series of the original cast. Thus, it covers the original series and the movies through Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country but it ignores Star Trek: The Next Generation, which I assume is covered in the second book even though it began broadcast in 1987. It’s a sensible division to make.Assuming that the person reading this is interested in Star Trek to begin with, there are two things that will likely determine whether or not this book is enjoyable. First, do you like reading lengthy interview excerpts from various people? Second, how much do you worship Gene Roddenberry?Essentially, this book is a giant collection of interview excerpts of people both major and minor in the history of the series. This has become a popular approach to the history of pop culture products, having previously been done for SNL and MTV, for example. It has its pleasures, giving a multitude of voice to people who were there and involved, sometimes bringing to the fore people wrongly forgotten and sometimes doing the same for people better left forgotten. It’s surprising how little there is from the cast, however. But it does feel like a series look behind the scenes. Also, Gene Roddenberry comes across very poorly in this book. He has his fans, obviously, but many of the voices here drive home how difficult he was to work with and how close he often came to destroying Star Trek. Though the idea for the series was definitely Roddenberry’s, there is a lot of commentary on how many of the best development was done by Gene L. Coon and others. Many people point out that, despite a long career, Star Trek was Roddenberry’s only real success and he used it as a cash cow for most of his life. It is a blow to people who think of Roddenberry as a giant.Still, if you keep in mind that this is a book of mostly opinion and little fact, it is illuminating on how Star Trek came to the screen and kept coming back over and over despite being on the verge of disappearing forever many times. It is definitely worth a read.

A collection of interviews with the people who brought Star Trek to life as well as those who kept the dream alive after the initial cancellation. Edited in such a way as to give the impression of a super large roundtable using old interviews mixed with new, giving us the memories and opinions of Gene Roddenberry, the cast and various crew members, studio employees, guest stars, and many more.Discussed in great, sometimes painful detail are:• The Original Series• The Animated Series• The unfilmed Phase II live action series• Star Trek: The Motion Picture• Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan• Star Trek III: The Search for Spock• Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home• Star Trek V: The Final Frontier• The unfilmed The Academy Years prequel (later used by J. J. Abrams)• Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered CountryFor the dedicated Trekkers (like me) or Trekkies who are open to the good and the bad. I found it interesting to see the honesty among many, as well as those who were more circumspect due to their continuing work in the entertainment business. I’ve already bought the sequel and look forward to reading about the Next 25 years. Most definitely a 5 out of 5.

It's always difficult to learn that someone you have long admired is not a particularly nice person, so in many ways, it is hard to read this book as there are many voices who are strongly critical of Gene Roddenberry. I guess it isn't anything I hadn't heard before, but having it all put together in a book, brings it home, and I realize that Roddenberry was an immensely complicated man who inspired and created a show that was bigger than he was, bigger than anyone could ever have imagined. I can admire the genius of his creation without necessarily admiring the man. I made that distinction years ago about Majel Barrett after meeting her at a convention and being appalled at her dismissive attitude toward her fans. I can admire her portrayal of Lwaxana Troi, without liking her.The book was not quite what I expected. Instead of a narrative, it is told in a series of quotes and anecdotes from various people who were involved in the show. I was expecting a more cohesive narrative, but once I got beyond that, I found it pretty interesting, particularly the parts dealing with the movies, because I'm not as familiar with the behind the scenes stuff about the movies. This is a good read for fans of the series as well as for anyone who is interested in the production of a TV show. Review

Even though I usually spend a lot of time on the plane reading, this trip I had planned on just relaxing. I started this book and it was difficult to put it down. I read it not once but three times on my last trip. This book is exactly what I need for my team. I have several sales and support people who I am responsible for and which I care a lot about. They are an excellent successful sales team. But I have been wondering what to do next to bring us more together and on the same page. After reading "You Are the Team", I knew exactly what to do. I want to make sure each one of my team members have an opportunity to read this inspiring book on teamwork. It is an excellent, easy to read and full of wonderful powerful motivation stories that can make you feel good about yourself and your team.~Fred Thomas - Vice President of Sales ArcOne

Once in a while an author strikes solid Gold. Mike Rogers did just that!"You Are the Team: 6 Simple Ways Teammates Can Go from Good to Great" is solid Teamwork GOLD. Full of nuggets of usable stories, excellent narrative, easy to understand how-tos in taking your self and your team to the next level.Mike has a wonderful, user friendly writing style that enables all levels of person (age, position in leadership, etc) to grasp each of the 6 ways in going from Good to Great in Teamwork. As I read the content it enabled me to assess where I stand personally, how I can apply it to teams I interact with, and "Yes", even to my family and other relationships. Practical and doable!Maybe I should say, it is Solid Gold and the heart of the content radiates the value of many precious stones. Amazing enough it matters not how you come to the book, even if the reader starts as a "diamond in the rough". You will I promise upon completion reach of the stars and step up to a new level in your commitment to becoming the best you can be as a teammate that makes the difference in those teams you are involved with.Good Job Mike! Onward and Upward! The Best is Yet to Come!

This book has inspired me to be a better team member! I have already become a better manager because of it. I have implemented a number of the suggestions, specifically being positive and celebrating a team members success in front of everyone. It was fun to watch the positive chain reaction of events take place by the simple act of celebrating another team member publicly.I appreciated how readable the book was. There was not a lot of big words or fancy jargon. It was direct and to the point on how to become a better team member. I really enjoyed the number of short stories that helped to drive certain points home.Another aspect of the book I liked was that after each section it stops you and asks you how can you apply the principles you just learned into your daily life. I found the book to be well written and easily applicable as a team member, a manager, a husband and a father. I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to improve themselves and the team that they are on!

Turning the concept of "teaming" on its head, Mike has written a book that invites every member of every team, not just the leader, to engage in making the team successful. Through interesting history and accomplished story-telling, Mike brings the reader on a journey of the 6 "Be's" to individual and team success. He provides thoughtful questions and exercises that lead the reader deeper into her own behavior with call to measure its impact on others. Simple but poignant, this book is a quick but a must read. The workbook that accompanies it is also spot on.

I have been doing a lot of traveling recently - so I have been spending time reading this new book "You Are the Team" Even though I usually spend a lot of time on the plane reading, this trip I had planned on just relaxing. It is an excellent, easy to read and full of wonderful powerful motivation stories that can make you feel good about yourself and your team.

You are the Team focuses on what I can do to be a great team member. I have had the privilege of working on several great teams and some that were not so great in education and corporate environments. At time, it's a challenge to to work with people that seem to be focused on their own interests than they are about working together for the good of the team. I appreciate the positive perspective of this book to challenge me to look at what I can do to improve to be a better teammate and not, "if only xxxx were better at xxxx." "Amazing things can happen when you take initiative and work to make the team better through your own example. Being a leader is more about what you do than what you say or try to make others do." (Michael G. Rogers) I highly recommend this book to any person working on a team in any capacity - home, work, school, etc. The principles taught are applicable to anyone that would like to improve relationships.

This book is very well thought out and written. The flow is good and it is easy to read. The content is amazing. Whether you are a manager, a director, a team member, or any other position, this book is a must read. If every single person on any team ever read and applied the principles of this book, wow! So much could be accomplished! While that's not realistic, for those of us that have a part to play in building our teams, these are some great things to also look for and strive for in your team and hire people that will be this type of person and get rid of those who aren't. I highly recommend this book. Take the time to read it and then apply it. There's something in here to be learned, even for the best team members out there.
