I really enjoyed Pandemic. As with all his books, the plot has been carefully researched. I love how the book thoughtfully combines a work of fiction with real-world threats, and shows how people and governments could potentially react. Riddle has you caring about the characters as well as the world.

I actually started reading this book when I was about half way through the audio book version of Dan Brown's "Inferno"; so these two books will forever be linked to me. Both involve a main character waking up in a strange place with amnesia and a worldwide pandemic looming. They also involve a secret society with the goal of fixing the human race. The big difference, though, is that Mr. Brown knew exactly what kind of novel he was writing from page one... a thriller. I enjoyed "Inferno" much better for its focus. "Pandemic" starts out being a procedural on investigating epidemics. We get a little bit of mystery with Desmund's arc, but it largely sticks with the scientists. Then the story starts delving deeply into Desmund's backstory. It all but abandons the scientists and beers into the thriller aspects. Neither is terribly written, it just feels like we wasted our time getting invested in the medical staff. If this book would have shaved off 200 pages and focused one one or the other, it would have been a lot better.As far as the ending goes, I have to say that I also preferred "Inferno" over this book. The "solution" in that book was much more elegant. It handles one major aspect of humanity permanently. "Pandemic" was very convoluted and required too many moving parts.

What makes the story truly gripping is how real it feels; the research that has gone into this book shows what would happen during an outbreak. It's got a great story and has compelling characters; no cliches or boring, flat dimensional characters here.Prepare yourself for a wild ride from start to finish, and if you're anything like me, you'll be gasping for more as you turn the last page.

If you haven't read any of his books, this is a good starting point. He takes well researched facts and blends them into a riveting read that you can't put down. This book is based around a mysterious disease outbreak in Kenya and then worldwide, developing into a very believable conspiracy. A great insight into the work of the CDC in the USA. Get it. Read it, u won't be disappointed.

The first third of this book was great, but by the second half of the book, the author lost me. The story starts out with a pandemic that threatens the world. But by the second half, we're into a world wide conspiracy with secret islands, submarines, and a mysterious machine (or whatever it is) that will save humanity. If you could accept all the weirdness in the TV show, Lost, then you'll probably love this book. But I am done. I gave up reading it 70% through.

While I read more than I used to, I'm not a regular consumer of fiction / series. So when I saw how long this book is, I feared maybe I had gotten in over my head — in the sense it might take me a month or more to finish it (which never has the same effect). I finished this book in about four days! That is testament to the interesting nature of the suspense the author creates, and to some of the character development as well. I don't know how long the second book will be but I am already looking forward to it.WHAT I LIKED MOST• The development of the main character, Desmond — seeing both sides of him from a young age and having to guess at what role he played in the whole thing. The memory aspect was pretty ingenious.• The overall plot and scenario — I don't know how many thrillers / suspense novels about epidemics or pandemics there are out there but this was my first forray into the topic and I feel it is both relevant in the times we live and interesting generally. You could tell in places the author did his homework; the details didn't feel fudged.• The storyline for the African doctor, Kibet. I'm glad the story didn't leave him behind as the activities in Africa became secondary. He is interesting.• The fact that the author obviously did some homework on how the CDC operates and on some real-world diseases and their impact. Made it a lot more authentic.MINOR DISTRACTIONS• In the first maybe 100 pages of the book, characters' hair color / qualities were described a lot and in Peyton's case, the color changed back and forth 4 or 5 times. First brown, then black, then dark brown, then black again, then brown again. lol I attribute this more to the editor of the book than the author — they should've caught it, synced a couple and and removed a couple of the references to avoid the distraction.MINOR CHARACTER / PLOT FLAWS*** SPOILER ALERT ***• The components of the Looking Glass (which I understand has to remain mysterious in its own right), were mentioned often in the second half of the book, with virtually no hint as to what role those components played / why they were important. Rook, Rendition, etc. While it's OK to leave readers in the dark initially to build suspense, towards the end of the book when clues and characters are coming together to paint a picture, I think more detail about what those inidividual pieces meant, would've been helpful.• Too many characters back from the dead and/or doing the whole "not who you think they are" bit: Peyton's Dad, Peyton's Brother, Peyton's Mom. I find it hard to believe on some level, that for all those years she never suspected any of it nor was dropped any hint about it by anyone involved. It felt a little forced and a bit like a TV drama or something where they have to keep hitting you over the head with "mind blowing moments" to cover up the fact that half the actors can't act and the script writers can't write. Obviously that's not WHY it was done here (there are no actors and the author is quite talented at weaving a story and painting a picture), but I do feel like it was over the top. I also find it almost impossible to believe that her brother, once the island was captured and overrun by US military, would simply be allowed to leave unquestioned and go start a life in Australia.• Unlike the Aftrican doctor, I felt like the continuation of Elliot's story in Atlanta left something to be desired. Maybe it lacked a thematic focus or — not sure. I actually would've preferred that part of the story be told from the perspective of someone totally unconnected to the CDC or the people involved in all things Looking Glass. Like John and Jane Q Public and their kid and their dog... some type of terrors or tribulations they had to go through, somewhere not so lucky where there's no Georgia Dome or CDC, more chaos maybe. People panicking and turning on their neighbors, etc (which I believe would happen in real life in many places).

Started out great as I am fascinated by how epidemics and pandemics might breakout and attempts to contain. I feel that the later part of the book fell apart with too many attempts at surprise. And plausibly. how does a Red Cross plane seemingly make a trip from the Shetland Islands to central Asia then to Australia seemingly within hours, as though the reader has no sense of the logistics and time it would take to fly such distances. I quit reading the book at 91 percent read.

When I found this book , my husband and I were in true crisis and divorce was looming. In a matter of a couple of weeks of practicing the 6 steps outlined in this book, my marriage of 15 years began to be drastically transformed. I cannot recommend this book enough to married and even single women, those of us who have lost ourselves and are simply just existing instead of experiencing true joy and thriving in our marriages and in life in general. Do yourself a favor as a strong, deserving woman, by making the time to read this book and take the first step down the road of self care. You and your marriage will not be sorry!

OK so here's my story; husband asked for a divorce about 3 months ago no kids. I moved out immediately. We went back and forth arguing over money and family issues. 2 days ago (after reading this book) I sent him a text that said "I would love to meet up and have lunch" (Expressing desires) He agreed. He asked about the time. I said I'm off so "whatever time you think is best" (Trust) We agreed on a time. He also said I could come early to hang out with the dog (He knows how much I love our dog and I haven't seen him in months so he was trying to make me happy). I agreed and said "Thank you. That really means a lot to me" (gratitude). We met up. I looked amazing. I came in the house smiling and laughing. I told him how I liked his hair (compliments, flirting). I went upstairs, he cornered me in the hallway, kissed me and it was a wrap. We had dinner, I let him pay (Receiving) and I listened to him the whole time with lots of "I hear you" and "uhuuhs" (Respect). He invited me to stay the night. We're not sure about the divorce but we definitely got closer in one day when I used just a few of the intimacy skills than we had been in the last 6 months.The only critique I have is that the book spoke more to women who are leaving their husbands and not much on women who have husbands initiating divorce (which is my case). I'm also a little worried about how to apply these skills when in separate housing without reaching out to meet up all the time. I'm hoping he now makes efforts to see me but of course I'm just keeping my side of the street clean without expectations.I'm not sure if this will restore our marriage but we are both at a good place right now and a lot less stressed. The book is based on the idea that women have a lot of control in relationships than we think. I now know that I can only control my actions. If we don't work out I can feel good knowing I did everything I could to save our marriage. I will try and update the situation...

I imagine there will be a firestorm of controversy over this book, but I loved it. And I have seen her advice make a positive difference in my marriage. Ladies, this is a gift from Laura Doyle. If you are thinking about divorce, do yourself a favor, and read this book. Your marriage can be everything you ever desired. Clue #1: Ditch the Marriage Counselor. Empower yourself, by making a small change, with huge results. If you married a good man, you really can find him again, and awaken him to the wonderful woman he married. It doesn't take long either... Read it!

Never have I felt compelled to review any of my countless Amazon purchases until this moment. I really wanted to like this book, but I just can't. The concept was promising: Focus on what you can control (your own behavior and happiness) instead of what you cannot control (your husband's unfavorable behavior). Like many women, I know my husband is never going to read a relationship book, so I wanted something geared toward me as a wife. I was a little put off that this book was once named, "First, Kill All the Marriage Counselors," but I figured the title change must reflect the diminishing stigma our society once felt toward therapy. I was also wary of the fact that Laura Doyle is not a doctor or master of anything, but simply a coach (for which there is currently no required license or certification process---literally anyone can say they are a coach and it is magically true!). But I gave it a chance because she claims she has worked with countless women to refine her program. I should have trusted my gut, because this book is nothing but slander toward marriage counselors accompanied by the padding of her job security as a relationship coach. The book starts off with a comparison between marriage counseling and relationship coaching which is completely inaccurate (does she truly believe that marriage counseling focuses on placing blame instead of accepting responsibility for your own part? Does she really think the research behind marriage counseling has not progressed past the 1800s? And does she not realize that the "theoretical approaches" marriage and family therapists learn from "textbooks and college courses" are based on research conducted over thousands of real couples' successes over hundreds of years?). I have a hard time believing that Laura Doyle is actually this misinformed and outdated. I find it incredibly tacky that she feels the need to tear down other people to promote herself. What's the point anyway? Obviously when we pick up this book, it's because we are not going to marriage counseling. So there is no need for slanderous lies about how ineffective marriage counselors are at the start of literally every. single. chapter. Just give us the secrets, Laura. We don't need you perpetuating the myth that marriage counseling focuses on shame, blame, and daddy issues. It saddens me that so many women have absorbed these lies and will probably never turn to couples' or personal counseling when they may really benefit from it. I give it two stars because I think once you get past all the fluff and the lies, her advice is actually pretty good. But it's nothing you wouldn't learn from a book by a licensed marriage and family therapist.

This book. Life changing! Such a great perspective shift for many different angles and typical challenges faced in a relationship. Don't miss this - there are small tweaks we can make to change the outcomes we see - so worth it! I wish that every chapter didn't start off with a dis on marriage counseling. Not that I have a strong opinion about that on either side - but it just seemed redundant and a bit of a negative starting point to each chapter. If you can overlook that intro each time, the rest of the content is well worth the read and has really great takeaways!

What a great book to have if you've spent any time at all in the Catskill Mountains in NY state. The pictures alone are worth keeping the book on your coffee table.

the best history of the Catskills!

A master historian/storyteller!

In 1998 and 1999, I spent many of my free weekends in the Catskill Mountains (not too far from where I live), frantically climbing the 35 peaks required for membership in the Catskill Mountain 3500 Club.As I did, I became more and more interested in the story behind the mystical woods I had become so irrevocably attached to. I learned of this book. I could not find it, but everyone said it was the book to read, referenced in any other book about the region I could find.Finally I did (not through amazon, but what the hell ...).I could not put it down - what I had traipsed through came alive on the page, yet many years ago in time.But you needn't have earned this appreciation to enjoy this book.Evers, still going strong in his late nineties as the Town of Woodstock historian (I talked to him on the phone once) draws on his extensive training in folklore to make these mountains, America's first wilderness, come alive not just through the lives and works of its rich and powerful but most importantly in the voices of the humble people of the region - the farmers and settlers who in many cases left little to show for their efforts but their names on some feature of land somewhere.Nor is he dry ... events, whether legendary or factual, that took place centuries ago, like Peter Delabigarre's first recorded ascent of what is now known as Kaaterskill High Peak, or the Anti-Rent War's bloody climax, are related as freshly as if Evers were an eyewitness.His history also avoids any inadvertent tendency to center on one area and pass it off for the whole Catskill region. He tells the stories of Woodstock well but when he needs to go to Delaware or Sullivan counties, he does, without a hint of ignorance.And his love for the region ... in his words one can, if one has been there, place oneself amidst the fragrant balsam fir of a high summit, a place like a dream one can always return to no matter the weather or season; athwart a rippling tributary, its clear, trout-friendly waters headed for the taps of New York City, the water John Burroughs said you could live on for a few days. If you haven't experienced those things, he'll make you want to.So many of these stories - Burroughs' trampings, the construction of Ashokan reservoir, the framing of the Hardenburgh patent, Guyot's surveys - are alone worth the price of admission. You may know them already, but you'll learn so much more.My only complaint would be the last chapter, an attempt to bring the story into the late 1970s with the Temporary Commission. While this is long on facts, it betrays haste in keeping the book up to date. I've just started learning to play the harmonica and bought 5 books. This is clearly my favorite for 3 reasons: it has the best selection of songs that I like, they are a good mix of easy and more challenging for beginners, and the tabs are printed clearer (easier to see when playing) than any of the other books. Highly recommend.

This is a great book to start out with. It really has a lot of songs and it is very cheap. Everything is in the key of C, so if you just buy the C harmonica, you're good to go.

Great book. All songs with standard music notation, harp tablature and guitar chords. Well made. Good selection of 62 American songs. Everything in first position for harp. I'm excited to play harp and guitar together and this book makes its very easy.

A great selection of songs to relax by the campfire with, hone your skill with the harmonica, and keep the bears away. The paperback material that was used for the cover was also impressive and feels sturdy enough to stand the test of time. Very pleased with this purchase overall.

The American Harmonica Song book is very and concise, easy to read and understand. All the songs are written with notes tablature and lyrics. I would highly recommend this book. It has helped me out tremendously in learning to play the Harmonica.

Plenty of mistakes. I can read music some. And even as inexperienced as I am, I can find mistakes. Some are mistakes in harmonica tabulatures. Some notes are just wrong.I would not buy it had I known how poorly written and edited it was.

Pretty good songbook. I would give it a perfect rating but some of the "draws" and "blows" are mislabeled but you will figure out which ones fairly quickly.

You already know most of these songs, but sit down for a few minutes with this book and you'll be playing them! This inexpensive book is the express route to gaining skills, confidence and a repertoire you can carry anywhere.

I have owned a variety of telescopes over the years, my most recent (and most expensive) acquisition being a 12" LX200ACF. I mounted it on a wedge on my permanent pier in my observatory. I was initially quite disappointed with the tracking ability, image quality and goto accuracy. I bought this book after reading a review. This book does NOT do as the title suggests (help you select a high-end telescope), but I knew that before purchasing.What it DOES provide is a plethora of tips regarding optimizing your LX200 for tracking, image quality and goto accuracy! I would recommend reading the book from cover-to-cover at least twice before acting on any of the advice (the information isn't ordered optimally, in my opinion). For those of us looking to optimize our LX200s, this book covers everything the Meade "manual" does not. Balancing, for example. Super-accurate polar alignment. Excellent PEC training. Computer-assisted collimation. How to make optimum use of ACP to sync your LX200 with your planetarium program, so you really can point, image and measure remotely.Here's an example of the power of the information in this book - I was able to balance my telescope to greatly reduce the stress on the motors and gears. I was able to (permanently) align my LX200 to within an arc minute of the celestial pole. I was able to reduce my PEC to under 2 seconds of arc.This book is phenomenal - an excellent value considering you shelled out thousands for your LX200!

this is certainly a useful and well written text, but it does not live up to its title, does not fill an important need within a brand category such as meade telescopes, and does not recognize the specific categories of amateur and semipro astronomers or the way they approach a telescope. my comments emphasize the disparity between the book's title and contents, and the fact that the contents are in fact highly specialized: they certainly don't tell you how to select a telescope!the first heading on the first page is "computers and astronomy," and roughly 150 of the book's 230 pages consists of chapters such as "essential software for basic operations," "software adjustment of polar alignment," "autoguiding," "using advanced software" and so forth. another 40 pages is devoted to balancing and polar alignment, the different types of telescopes, generic telescope accessories, updating firmware, telescope retailers and online user groups. i judge only about 30 pages or less than 15% of the book is actually concerned with meade specific products or guidelines for their use.it's a shame, because the meade user manual appears to have been written by a retired engineer, full of facts but meager with guidance. what is the best way to position the tripod on unpaved soil, or use the gps system, or update location or time information, or autoalign the scope? when autoalignment fails, why does that happen? how should one transport the scope, or store it (batteries left in, or taken out?), care for the optics, or clean dirty optics? how does one ventilate or cool down the scope prior to viewing? what specifically does "advanced coma free" (ACF) optics mean, and how specifically do ACF optics differ from newtonian, cassegrainian or ritchey-chretien optics? what are the best eyepieces to use for different circumstances, and which are the recommended manufacturers? on all these practical and highly important issues, both harris and the manufacturer user guide have nothing at all to offer.the other drawback is that astronomers come in flavors: the big divide is between the visual observers (with their lifetime checklists of the messier 110 or herschel 400) and the astrophotographers (with their CCD cameras); the visual observers divide further into variable star, near earth object or deep sky observers, to name only three. each group prefers different strategies for organizing their night time viewing, right down to the ways they use star atlases and sky software to plan out the sequence of galactic locations and viewing times for objects they intend to observe and the eyepieces or filters they will use. these activities are all software related: harris says nothing about them. worse, in the 30 pages where he does talk about meade products, he rather annoyingly speaks of the meade LX400 (which he owns) as the "top of the line" scope, and the LX200 as "also very good", omitting the more obvious and important facts that meade no longer makes the LX400 scope, the LX400 actually *must be* computer controlled and, because of its shorter focal length and larger secondary mirror, is better suited for astrophotography than visual observing.again, this book has quite a lot of useful and well presented information on aligning, collimating and controlling a telescope with computer software and the primarily photographic application of a telescope operated by computer. for any information outside that narrow bailiwick ... you're still stuck with the meade user guide.
