Futureface: A Family Mystery, an Epic Quest, and the Secret to Belonging, by Alex Wagner

Review

“Futureface raises urgent questions having to do with history and complicity. . . . A rich and revealing memoir.”—The New York Times“A thoughtful, beautiful meditation on what makes us who we are . . . and the values and ideals that bind us together as Americans.”—Barack Obama“Smart, searching . . . Meditating on our ancestors, as Wagner’s own story shows, can suggest better ways of being ourselves.”—Maud Newton, The New York Times Book Review“Sincere and instructive . . . This timely reflection on American identity, with a bonus exposé of DNA ancestry testing, deserves a wide audience.”—Library Journal“The narrative is part Mary Roach–style participation-heavy research, part family history, and part exploration of existential loneliness. . . . The journey is worth taking.”—Kirkus Reviews“[A] ruminative exploration of ethnicity and identity . . . Wagner’s odyssey is an effective riposte to anti-immigrant politics.”—Publishers Weekly “Alex Wagner is brilliant and hilarious. Futureface is a magic trick: She starts with the humble story of a third-culture kid’s existential loneliness and ends with a smart, timely, and moving exploration of family lies, exile and immigration, genetics, and the mystery of human belonging.”—Eddie Huang, bestselling author of Fresh Off the Boat   “Futureface is an important contribution to the American conversation—Alex Wagner’s story is insightful, moving, informative, and searing. I have deeply admired Alex for a long time as an original thinker, a keenly observant journalist, and a funny, empathetic human being. Read this book and you’ll understand why.”—Wes Moore, bestselling author of The Other Wes Moore

I bought this book because, like so many other samples I have downloaded, it started off so well. It was interesting and well written. But once on the hook for the price of the book, it was all downhill. It’s like the author and her editor just stopped trying.Unending chapters full of tedious paragraphs full of rhetorical questions to herself? No thanks. Big mystery with a shocking reveal? Nope. None of the results she gets from dna tests are even remotely shocking or interesting. The blurbs for this book are very misleading. Don’t waste your money.

I liked this book very much. Alex’s personality shines through nicely, it’s a fun, nerdy wit. I agree with some of the other reviewers that there isn’t a big “a-ha” revelatory moment, but that is also the point. We do identify and identify with race, but the conclusions we may draw from anything we go out looking for may fall flat, whether it’s delving into history books, or getting shaky science DNA tests. We are all on earth biding time till death, it’s a personal journey, whatever we are to make of it, whatever history we want to tie ourselves to, whatever history we want to make for ourselves, it’s up to us.I like the idea another reviewer had, that Alex could go on to become a Burmese historian, there is a lot of unknown there. Definitely a lot of work!

Everybody should read this. A bracing corrective to all the artificial divisions so many of us have erected, and for what?

It’s a story about finding yourself in America. Looking back at the past and realizing that you’re, instead, in the present and the future.Honestly, didn’t find it too insightful. I didn’t really care to read her adventures through archives and continents, but I stuck through it and found her quiet acceptance of being American and metropolitan. Okay. Sure, I guess.Read it because Obama said it was “a thoughtful, beautiful meditation on what makes us who we are and the values and ideals that bind us together as Americans.” I found it more a rambling book about research methods, she’s grasping for more and there’s nothing there. Nonetheless, she talks about things I’ve been thinking about recently, and her prose is good.

Our search for roots takes us deep into the history of the world. I found myself fascinated by Burmese nationalism and the Franco-Prussian War as these things affected everyday citizens. A Howard Zinn way of looking at history. And the delve into the science behind DNA testing was helpful. Most of all I like her conclusions as she answers the questions “Who are we? To whom do we belong?”

Follow Alex Wagner as she traces her ancestry to Europe and Burma

Seemed to me that she reviewed the same stories again and again. It was a slow read. But an interesting topic.

Brilliant exploration of who we are based on family stories. Then exploring the realities of our past histories and current definition of being here in America. How we all must come to terms with self knowledge and self respect to be there for others...for a greater cause of affirming each other.

The good news: this is probably the only book you will find on this architectural style and the history behind it. Well-written and extremely informative, very readable. The bad news: the pictures are either very amateurish or reproduced badly. Many of them are quite small, and you can barely see them. The book design is terrible. There is more emphasis placed on negative space than on reproducing pictures large enough so you can see what you are looking at. Great big boxes of copy devoted to sideline type and decorative elements which are not necessary. Huge waste of space. Since the point of the book is to show and tell, it's a shame the designer decided to show off her fripperies and didn't let the writer/photographer and the content shine.

I love the book but many of the pictures are the same from volume 1 which I also own.

I love these houses, the fotos are great, the history nice and the stories about the people who live in them or had them built is bliss

Beautiful book filled with interesting pictures and text

just the pictures I was looking for!

Great Pictures. Love to daydream That I live in any one these homes.

Very informative, great photos and subject matter, excellent narrative

accurate & prompt

A Place for Us: A Novel, by Fatima Farheen Mirza

Review

Praise for A Place for Us:“Absolutely gorgeous...Mirza writes about family life with the wisdom, insight and patience you would expect from a mature novelist adding a final masterpiece to her canon, but this is, fortunately, just the start of an extraordinary career…. Has a household ever been cradled in such tender attention as this novel provides?... As Marilynne Robinson has done with Protestants and Alice McDermott has done with Catholics, Mirza finds in the intensity of a faithful Muslim family a universal language of love and anguish that speaks to us all... In prose of quiet beauty and measured restraint, Mirza traces those twined strands of yearning and sorrow that faith involves. She writes with a mercy that encompasses all things.... Each time I stole away into this novel, it felt like a privilege to dwell among these people, to fall back under the gentle light of Mirza’s words."— Ron Charles, Washington Post“Ambitious… a family epic that is textured and keenly felt… Mirza draws Amar’s lifelong struggle with the concept of unconditional devotion so poignantly that readers will find it exceedingly relatable. But so too is the mysterious whisper in his ear urging him always to return, no matter how far he strays, back home.”— New York Times Book Review“The thinking person’s summer read, a rich and layered tale about family and assimilation.” — Entertainment Weekly "[An] impassioned debut novel… Mirza is attuned to the subtle ways in which siblings and parents compete for one another's affection. A ruminative final section, in which the father addresses his wayward son, is a moving coda."— The New Yorker"The book dives into the lives of a Muslim-American family, opening on the eve of the eldest daughter's marriage, and examines the intricacies of a family straddling two very different cultures."— Vanity Fair“A Place for Us is a stunning novel about love, compassion, cruelty and forgiveness — the very things that make families what they are…[Mirza’s] writing is gorgeous, unadorned but beautiful… a miracle of a book. A Place for Us is a major accomplishment, a work of real beauty and fierce originality.”— Michael Schaub, NPR.org“In polished prose that zeroes in on domestic detail and, at its loveliest, recalls Jhumpa Lahiri, Mirza delivers a portrait of a family straining to hold its center amid rebellions both quiet and explosive.”— TIME“A rich portrait of a fractured Muslim family…With unwavering compassion, this beautiful heartbreaker unravels the mystery of who may be to blame for Amar’s estrangement.”  —People"Magical." — ELLE“This is a richly detailed, immersive saga that hooks you from the jump and keeps you absorbed even as you spend decades with its characters. A Place for Us is a tender examination of identity and familial roles, of faith, and of what it means to be home.” — Marie Claire “An affecting, authentic and artful debut by Fatima Farheen Mirza… Mirza's writing is poignantly beautiful…By the end of the novel, readers may wish that some characters had spoken up at critical junctures and that other characters had swallowed the words that irreparably altered the course of events. That we become so invested is a testament to Mirza's talent.”— Associated Press"A stunner, worthy of a place among the finest books ever written about an American family."— Minneapolis Star Tribune"If you crave a family epic, read A Place for Us by Fatima Farheen Mirza....In this stunning, gorgeous novel, Mirza looks at the crucial events in an Indian-American Muslim family from many perspectives."— Refinery29“One of the biggest books of the summer.”— Bustle“Fatima Farheen Mirza's A Place for Us is everything I love about family sagas. It traverses time and place, explores the conflicts between a parent's expectation and a child's desires, and, most importantly, introduces us to fully imagined, flawed characters whose relationships are deep, entangled, and rich in love. The story — which centers on an American Muslim family navigating the tension between tradition and autonomy — is told in fragments, jumping from one character to another, slowly adding layers to scenes by revisiting interactions from multiple perspectives. And Mirza renders this family with a gentle hand, lovingly, so that each character will make their way into your heart.”— Buzzfeed"A brilliant debut from Fatima Farheen Mirza... this is a story about hope, and about the ways in which, if we open ourselves up to forgive the flaws in those we love, we can better move forward toward a brighter future."— Nylon“A complex narrative that dives into the fractured relationships that make up an Indian family as they gather for a wedding.”— PopSugar“Beautiful.” —Daily Beast"Highly anticipated."— Parade“Few novels so elegantly capture the complicated cultural dynamics of a modern American family quite like A Place for Us....Told from multiple perspectives, the story offers a nuanced look at what it's like to feel caught between two cultures, struggling to honor where you come from while attempting to fit in where you are. A devastating and deeply moving book.”— Shondaland"This affecting debut follows an Indian-American Muslim family as they assimilate into U.S. culture... Mirza’s expansive novel tackles everything from 9-11 to addiction, each moment offering a sliver of explanation as to how a family can become so fractured. Mirza writes about her characters with an incredible amount of tenderness, keeping readers invested."— Village Voice"A Place for Us resonates at the crossroads of culture, character, storytelling and poignancy."— BookPage"A hauntingly beautiful and poignant story of identity, belonging and perception. This first novel from Sarah Jessica Parker's new imprint, SJP for Hogarth, is as timely as it is stunning, and is the perfect launch for an imprint designed to celebrate literary fiction titles that will resonate with all readers, regardless of race, gender or experience."— Bookreporter“Fatima Farheen Mirza’s story brilliantly displays a path to mold old traditions with the new to examine love and identity.”— The Margins“Extraordinary in its depth and diligence... Mirza adeptly revisits painful dilemmas from each narrator’s perspective, revealing jolting secrets. Each complex, surprising character struggles with faith, responsibility, racism, fear, longing, and jealousy, while Mirza conveys with graceful specificity the rhythms of Muslim life, from prayer to wearing hijab, gender etiquette, food, holidays, and values, all of which illuminate universal quandaries about family, self, culture, beliefs, and generational change.” — Booklist"A California-based Indian Muslim family celebrates the wedding of daughter Hadia, marrying for love. Present is her estranged brother Amar, who hasn't easily mnaged the rough road between youth and adulthood, Old World tradition and America, and the novel effectively unfolds family tensions and Amar's swirling personal anguish."— Library Journal “The debut of 26-year-old Mirza is the first book from Sarah Jessica Parker's imprint at Hogarth; it explores the spiritual lives of its characters with sympathy and passion. The title of the book echoes a song from West Side Story, itself a retelling of Romeo and Juliet. Here the warring forces are not two families but one, split by the tension between reverence and rebellion. The author's passion for her subject shines like the moon in the night sky, a recurrent image in this ardent and powerful novel.”  — Kirkus“Mirza displays a particular talent for rendering her characters’ innermost emotional lives, signaling a writer to watch.”— Publishers Weekly"A Place for Us is a triumph and an inspiration. I wish everyone would read this novel. A chronicle of the shattered expectations and irreconcilable desires within an American-Muslim family, A Place for Us hums with a deep faith in an unknown future, reminding its readers that when we are lost, love gives us a map home.”— KAREN RUSSELL, author of Swamplandia!“A Place for Us is a radiantly envisioned, beautifully achieved epic about nearly everything that matters: love, family, faith, freedom, betrayal, contrition, absolution. Fatima Farheen Mirza is a magnificent new voice." — ANTHONY MARRA, author of A Constellation of Vital Phenomena “This powerful, intricate debut is essential reading.” — NOVIOLET BULAWAYO, author of We Need New Names“This extraordinary, piercingly wise novel examines as profoundly as any book I know the threads of injury and grace that stitch together a family. Fatima Farheen Mirza has the passionate intelligence and moral vision that announce not merely an excellent writer, but a great one. I felt such gratitude reading this fiercely compassionate debut, and such joy at discovering a voice I will follow for the rest of my life.” — GARTH GREENWELL, author of What Belongs to You"The depth of the storytelling and the beauty of the language makes this debut novel by Fatima Farheen Mirza something to treasure. Highly recommended!"— JOHN BOYNE, author of A Ladder to the Sky“Fatima Farheen Mirza’s A Place for Us is a radiant debut. It accretes its power, beauty, and insight through its tender witnessing of private and family life. With her deeply compassionate view, Mirza dignifies terrain often desecrated by contemporary culture: maternity, faith, the bonds of community, the yearning for goodness, and our duty to others.  She shows us the destructiveness of our doubt in those we love, and the mercy of forgiveness.  Most wondrously, with this felt and moving novel, Mirza creates a place in which rebellion and reverence seem to embrace.” — CHARMAINE CRAIG, author of Miss Burma    “Fatima Farheen Mirza’s A Place for Us is a work of extraordinary and enthralling beauty. It is so deeply imagined, so intimately attentive to and solicitous of the lives it follows, so artful in describing the inseparable human experiences of pride and resentment, humility and loyalty -- and, most of all, love – that it feels not as if we are reading a novel about this Muslim-American family struggling with tradition and culture, but as if we become actual members of the family. It is that immersive, that brilliant, that true.”— PAUL HARDING, author of Tinkers"Beautiful, intimate, tender. So vividly told the characters live and breathe." — RACHEL JOYCE, author of The Music Shop

I absolutely loved this book which focuses on an Indian American family who have come to the United States and are now making their home in California. The story opens at Hadia's wedding where her brother Amar has come to reconcile with the family after having left home several years earlier. From that point, the book moves back and forth in time as bits and pieces of this family's story is revealed. We see Layla and Raffiq as a young couple, just starting out. We see the childhoods of Hadia and her younger sister Huda, and her younger brother, Amar. Different key events in their lives are shared, giving some background for the current state of their relationship now. This is a family saga that absolutely captured my attention from the very first page. I found each of the characters interesting and enjoyed how Mirza moved the story in time and perspective. I loved that although this is an immigrant story that is well done, it is also the story of more than just a family trying to assimilate in a new country and culture. Mirza's characters each have their own stories and flaws that are developed. I felt like this picture of a family is well done, that Mirza shows the good, the bad, the beautiful, the ugly. The resolution of the story is also well done, although not tied up with a pretty bow, either.A Place For Us will very likely be one of the best books I read in 2018. I can't wait to see what else this author creates.

Sorry, but I do not know what all the rave reviews are about. I found this book to be almost impossible to finish, but finish it I did. Waaaay too much religious stuff for my taste. I did plod thru this tho, because of all the rave reviews, and I figured I would find what everybody was raving about. Sadly, but I did not. I could not pinpoint any specific story line. It seemed to be about an emotionally abusive father now facing his mortality, and regretting the way he treated his son. Nevermind that he also didn't treat his two daughters much better, but the SON, oh yes, the SON. Typical religious thinking, the SON is the most important, the SON is the only one, the SON, the SON, the SON; thank the MALE gods that I have a SON. Yes I mistreated my children, but I mostly regret mistreating my SON. If you're religious and think the men are appointed by whatever 'god' is, then this is a good book for you. Me, forget it.

One of the best books Ever! I can't wait to see what this author writes next. This was one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. It does not matter your religion. I am Catholic and I can say that I truly loved this book and reading about the Muslim faith. Ms Mirza has a beautiful way of writing . I would almost like to see a follow up book to see what is going on with Amar and the rest of the family. I really felt for the father. I would like to see him make things right with his son. As we all age everything comes into a more clear perspective and we realize that we need to give a little more, lighten up and enjoy life more. I will appreciate looking up at the night sky and my surroundings more now after reading this book. For a young woman in her twenties to write such a wonderful book while going to college is amazing to me. All I did in college was drink and study in that order. Bravo!!!

I hesitate to pen this review because from where I sit, no words of mine could possibly do justice to this breathtakingly beautiful story...but I think to not contribute to the reviews that could encourage other readers to pick this up would be an even greater injustice to the author, who deserves every single word of praise and much more. While this is definitely a beautiful story, it is so unbelievably tragic that I think I'll be revisiting it for many days, and I will most definitely be reading it again...This book both broke my heart and made me smile throughout. Each character is so masterfully and intricately written that you feel as if you truly know them. You feel the love as it blooms in their hearts, their sadness and devastation as each strand of cord that ties them together is broken, their anxiety and inner conflict when they are keeping a secret, their regret and feelings of guilt that motivate them to do both everything and nothing to fix themselves and one another. Even Huda, who seems to be more of a minor character comes through with strength as the decades pass. I love the way that Fatima Farheen Mirza continues to give entirely different perspectives on the same events from each of the characters in the book. Hadia's great love for her entire family that is sometimes challenged for her desire for individual freedoms and equality. Layla's blind love for her son is counterbalanced for the jealousy she guiltily feels over her daughter's preference for Rafiq when they are young. Amar's desire for approval is diminished by what he feels is constant rejection from his community. What was most interesting to me was to recognize that Amar and Rafiq were mirror images of one another. Both wanted nothing more than love and acceptance from one another, but both were too prideful and afraid of rejection to allow themselves to actually pursue it. The saddest part about this story are the feelings they keep hidden in the dark recesses of their hearts and souls until it is too late. So many times throughout the book I found myself saying, JUST SAY IT! TELL THEM! But how like us all it is to keep these most important things tucked away, only to allow our anger and knee-jerk reactions dominate our relationships?Rafiq's narrative is the most heart-wrenching to read as a parent. I related so much to both Hadia and Amar because everyone has been the rebellious teenager who wishes they could just be accepted as they are. But as a parent, and understanding Rafiq's regret at the ripple effect his words and actions had not just in his own life, but in the life of his children left me speechless. How often do I say things to my children that hurt them because I think it is the right thing to say, when really I want to give them the love they are yearning for? The final piece of the story, in which Rafiq finally sets aside his pride and delivers a message to Amar via Abbas, is where I finally teared up and where we finally see Rafiq come full circle to his own desires to know his father as a boy.Beautiful story, beautiful prose and beautiful tragedy. This book is one that will live on for many, many years!

I recently saw an interview on 60 Minutes that Tim Green has ALS. He appeared with one of his sons. Like a fighter, he is not letting it get him down. Like his football game career he is moving forward. I read his books several years ago. The show reminded me of how much I enjoyed his books. I went to Kindle and decided to read his wonderful books again.. His books, like him are an inspiration. His books are page turners.. Once you read the first few pages, you want to keep reading. I plan to re-read all of his books. They are all inspiring, like his life. That is why I gave him five well deserved stars. If you are looking for a good read, I would recommend you read his books!!!!!!

Review

Praise for Deadly Monopolies:"Deadly Monopolies explores contentious issues in modern biomedical research that have been aggravated by the field’s commercial emphasis.....Though she is not the first to raise many of these concerns, Washington offers an overarching framework that enables readers to see connections that are often obscured. The book’s brilliance lies in the compassionately told narratives of individuals whose lives have been affected by the increasing corporate control of scientific research. Rather than simply writing another book about biomedical wrongdoing, Washington with her journalistic approach provides a more humane account of the problems tied to the for-profit nature of today’s research industry. In doing this, Washington accomplishes what has thus far escaped previous authors. She makes the case for a broader political consciousness of science and technology....This is precisely the conversation an important book starts in order to challenge readers to see the world differently so that they connect the disparate dots. Deadly Monopolies is an extraordinary achievement in this and many other regards."—Osagie K. Obasogie, The American Prospect "A searing look at the medical-industrial complex and its ability to patent genes and other biological products, resulting in an opportunistic and powerful pharmaceutical industry that often ignores the most pressing global-health issues in order to make a profit.National Book Critics Circle Award winner Washington (Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present, 2007, etc.) begins with the controversial 1980 Bayh-Dole Act, which allowed the commercialization of medical inventions based on government-funded patents, including those on living things. As a result, an unprecedented collusion between universities, researchers and private pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies spawned an era in which many vital medicines are too expensive or inaccessible to average consumers, or rushed to market before being adequately tested. Despite the fact that taxpayers largely fund medical research and development, pharma companies include that cost in their purported expenses, therefore using disingenuous figures to justify the skyrocketing costs of patented drugs. The author adeptly details the wide-ranging repercussions of this monopolistic research model and recounts chilling anecdotes that reveal a pattern of shady practices by biotech and pharma companies. These firms often display a lack of respect for patients' rights in a ruthless pursuit of "blockbuster" drugs without regard for helping those who need it most. As of 2009, only 10 percent of the more than $70 billion spent per year on medical research addresses “diseases that cause 90 percent of the world's health burden.” In addition, minorities and poor populations are often exploited for their genetic material yet not compensated for their contribution. Thousands of people die from preventable causes simply because it's not profitable to save them. The author clearly presents data to elucidate these complex issues, and cogently argues that there are opportunities to reinstate transparency, collaboration and altruism in drug development and disbursement.A gripping, revelatory account."—Kirkus Reviews (starred)“Harriet Washington has written an important and compelling book.  She shows how recent changes in patent law have caused drug prices to soar, while reducing innovation by drug companies to near-zero.  Well-documented, yet highly readable, the book paints a vivid picture of an industry that now exploits monopoly rights to patients' genes, and relies on taxpayer-funded NIH research for its few novel and important drugs—even as it turns out an endless stream of trivial variations of top-selling old drugs.”—Marcia Angell, M.D., author of The Truth About the Drug Companies and former editor of the New England Journal of Medicine “Harriet Washington shines her relentless torch into the darkest corners of Big Pharma with courage, dedication and accuracy.”     —John le Carré“Big Pharma is not going to like Deadly Monopolies one bit, but you probably will—especially if, like most Americans, you’re finding the co-pay on your drugs too much to handle. Washington correctly reminds us that, as hard as high drug costs are in the USA, they are lethal for the world’s poor. Brava Harriet Washington!”—Laurie Garrett, Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and author of I Heard the Sirens Scream: How Americans Responded to the 9/11 and Anthrax Attacks “Patents, we’re repeatedly told, are crucial to fostering innovation. Deadly Monopolies reveals how the privatization of medical science is retarding research, putting patients at risk, and making what cures we have exorbitantly expensive. This book is a meticulously documented exposé of what’s gone wrong with our medical innovation system, and a roadmap for change.”—Merrill Goozner, author of The $800 Million Pill: The Truth Behind The Cost of New DrugsPraise for Harriet A. Washington’s Medical Apartheid:“An important book. The disgraceful history it details is a reminder that people in power have always been capable of exploiting those they regard as ‘other.’”—New York Times“A fresh account of the Tuskegee study, including new information, lies at the center of Harriet A. Washington’s courageous and poignant book. Washington sheds light on how our understanding of what constitutes medical research requires broadening in the face of new developments in genetic science.”—Washington Post Book Review “Medical Apartheid is fascinating and compelling . . . The book’s analysis challenges the reader to question established paradigms in the history of medicine.—Dr. Marius Turda, Oxford Brookes University, in Social History of Medicine“Groundbreaking . . . Washington is a great storyteller, and in addition to giving us an abundance of information on ‘scientific racism’ the book, even at its most distressing, is compulsively readable . . . Paints a powerful and disturbing portrait of medicine, race, sex, and the abuse of power.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)“One of [Washington’s] goals in writing this book, aside from documenting a shameful past, is to convince [African Americans] that they must participate actively in therapeutic medical research . . . while remaining ever alert to possible abuses . . . Sweeping and powerful.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Although this book was informative, Washington used elevated language appropriate for her peers, not the audience who needs to hear about it. The book felt drawn out and repetitive after a while.

Great book!

Really good very informative

I highly recommend this book be read by all functionally literate humans. I underlined and made so many notes in my copy of the book, it could not possibly be re-sold to anyone.A lot of what I read was "you don't say." However, when I read about presumed consent and how in most states it is legal to harvest your body and or organs without consent, had steam coming from my ears(figuratively, of course). I want choke a doctor and his/her co-conspirators.

Clearly the book has a lot of work and effort behind it. I am only 1/2 way through, but feel some of the points mentioned are feeling rather than fact based information. However the main points are well documented and no doubt should be of concern to us all, particularly in light of our US cost of healthcare, almost double per capita all other western industrialized countries. Knowing also that Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security are the largest part of our present and future fiscal mismanagement problems also highlights the authors many good points. It's a bit tough to slog through, but worth reading.

DEADLY MONOPOLIES will change your life! Once you begin reading this book, your approach to your health will be transformed. If I had known years ago what I now know, so many things would be different. Save your loved ones by reading this book, and save yourself by asking the questions that will get you the answers you need. I suggest buying multiple books or sharing the reading because it's going to expand your mind. Truly a revolutionary read!

If you ever wondered why the healthcare industry is such a mess, read this book. Ms. Washington explains the details of the corporate nightmare that is healthcare today in America, congress' complicity (and how they cash in because of it) and why our courts allow big Pharma to patent life-saving medications, created for the most part with our tax dollars, and the charge ridiculous amounts of money to sell them back to us. She is absolutely brilliant and the book will definitely open your eyes and raise your blood pressure.

Shows a slice of government intervention that doesn't add to scientific inquiry. This book tells how patents interfere with creativity and curiosity.
