Jocko Willink and Leif Babin have an excellent skill at taking a simple and intuitive mindset and communicating how this mindset is very key in succeeding at leading yourself or others to success. Whether its overseas or in an office high-rise they claim that this mindset will lead to higher success and growth as a person and they have convinced me of this claim through this book.What I like most about this book is that a lot of the ideas in it are intuitive or already very well known. What makes this book special is the way in which they tie a lot of these simple ideas together into an easy-to-understand mindset. They do so in a straight-forward and honest way, backing up their claims from their time in combat or from the numerous consulting experiences with various companies. While it is obvious that Willink and Babin have a lot of experience in leadership, they do a great job at presenting the content in a down-to-earth manner that is relatable. I like that they even go into detail about mistakes they have made and how they learned from it themselves. Someone who can identify their own mistakes and learn from them, to me, shows a mastery of the willingness to learn and to grow as an individual. Anyone could benefit from learning from someone with this mastery and both of these men have it.Pros:*Written in a straight-forward, down-to-earth way*Applicable advice for anyone in any situation*Very good presentation and integration of intuitive or already-known ideasCons:*NoneAdditional Considerations:Jocko has a great podcast he puts out weekly. It seems I'm in the minority here but I didn't love this book. I love leadership and I love discipline and I was hoping to hear some unique thoughts about these subjects. I hadn't heard an interview from the author and was very excited about this book.I simply didn't find any of the principles on leadership or discipline to be anything more than common knowledge. If you read books on leadership before or on discipline or military books, there doesn't seem to be anything unique here, in my opinion.If you love War Stories especially in a modern context, this is an excellent book. It's well-written and fun to read. I just didn't particularly find it helpful.For leadership technique or principles of self discipline, I would not recommend this book. For stories of overcoming challenges in Modern Combat and conflict, I would recommend this book.But ultimately, given my expectations, I was pretty disappointed. I'm also disappointed at the great reviews it's got because I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here!* Edit: I went back and read some of the lower reviews and I concur with all of them. I'm glad at least a few people noticed that this book was heavy on bragging and light on principles. The 90% five star reviews are only right if you love War Stories and don't really care about leadership or self discipline.

You would be wrong.This isn't a self-help book from some "gurus", nor does it provide an ideology or set of steps for how to approach specific problems. Extreme Ownership is a mindset which applies to everything you do. Authors Jocko Willink and Leif Babin have crafted a guidebook for success in all ventures of life. They explain hard-learned principles of leadership, which they experienced first-hand as US Navy SEALs, specifically in and around their 2006 deployment to Ramadi, Iraq, one of the most dangerous places and times in the war. These principles can be applied to any relationships or walks of life; they are simple enough for anyone to understand, and broad enough to use in any situation.The book is separated into 12 chapters, each which highlights a principle of leadership. Each chapter is then broken into 3 seconds. The first section is an anecdote providing an example of how US Navy SEALs use their military experience to demonstrate each principle. The second section is how & why the principle works. The third section is an example of how that principle transforms from the battlefield, into world of businesses of all types & sizes, as experienced by the authors and their customers. It is very easy to read and understand, despite the regular use of military jargon (which is either footnoted or explained so even non-military readers can comprehend).Military recruits & officers, parents, corporate executives, students, low-level management, spouses, shop foremen, independent contractors, and sole proprietors will all benefit from the lessons of Extreme Ownership.If you feel you're stuck in a rut, lacking self-discipline, or perhaps know someone who simply needs to improve their lot, this book is an excellent starting point.I have personally read & completed this book, but I will never be done with the concept of "Extreme Ownership". Being able to take ownership and be accountable for the things around me has truly changed my life for the better.

The book is a very useful companion to the DVD series. I find a book so much easier to use as a reference. This book, however, only goes half way. There is no real index beyond lecture titles. The bibliography looks very complete. There is a short glossary, but again, without any page references.

I've listened to 18 of the 24 discs since purchasing this course (many times listening 2 or 3 times to fully "get" it). I find my meditation practice improving, and that I'm living more mindfully and in the moment.The instructor is engaging, has a pleasant voice, and is easy to follow. I hope I can find more courses like this!

A guide to a calm and peaceful existence - it set me on a path to a more compassionate and accepting mindset. I prefer the lecture format to the more conversational style of â€œthe power of nowâ€

I was forced to read this book in high school, and didn't like it. As I got older, I found myself more and more interested in the meaty side of history (as opposed to just the glamorous parts), and I suddenly remembered this book. After reading it twice now, I can say it stands out as one of the best fictional history books I have ever read. If you wanted to get a sense of the history of England, and also what life was like for everyday people during various periods in the past, check this one out! I am going to start reading all of Edward Rutherfurd's books, based on this one.

Quite a thorough saga! Sarum really is the story of the history of England, from prehistoric times to the modern era. By taking several family lines and creating a series of interlocking stories set in the Salisbury, England area, but sometimes 100s of years after each other, I got the feeling of being there during each major period of history. My wife and I now are planning a trip to Salisbury to see and feel the area that we have come to know through these powerful stories. Each story, although new, felt familiar because the descendants of the previous stories were the characters in the next story and some of the physical and behavior traits were carried along the generations. A fascinating way to learn history. I could put the book down after each section for the first 500 pages, but after that, the next 300 pages pulled me along in a trance.

I was in my grandparents' living room, thirteen years old, and saw this book laying on the coffee table. A tome, almost a thousand pages, no dust jacket to clue me in to the content. I picked it up and opened to the first page: "First, before the beginning of Sarum, the world was a colder and darker place......" That was it for me, I was in. I devoured the book with abandon, nevermind the occasional sentence that runs on for a whole paragraph, dizzying me with confusion. This was my introduction to historical fiction, and what an introduction it was. It was the first book in a lifelong obsession with the genre. The way that Rutherford handles his subject, telling the story of a particular place over time, using characters that change but families that don't, is genius. I have since read his others but Sarum will always be my favorite.

Mr. Rutherford has done an amazing job of following the descendants of a handful of families based around Salisbury, Engalnd through time. Starting around 9000bc and progressing to 1980 and creating vignettes at important points in England's history showing how those historical events impacted the families at each point in time. It is a great social history.I found it quite Interesting how the author showed physical features and personality traits descending through the lines. And I was moved by the way the reader was put I to the various battles, ie the Roman defeat of Bodeccia and her Iceni followers, Alfred and the Vikings, The War of the Roses etc., as well as other events. His approach brought greater understanding to the events.I thought that the building of Stone Henge and Salisbury Cathederal was a little too drawn out and thus limited what could be presented in other events. But the book is dedicated to the cathedral and thus I give him his leeway.Some have given lesser ratings complaining about the book bogging down at points but I personally thought it moved along much better than some of James A Michener and others' works. I think the book will be well received by those who enjoy reading about history and not so well by those who don't.

I have noted with interest the number of reviewers who are not charmed by "Sarum." If a person is not enthralled by Stonehenge he might not be enthralled with this epic book. Perhaps a person has to be a Stonehenge junkie to enjoy Rutherfurd's sojourn into Neolithic Britain and the long, long road to the present. Many years ago, when you could still roam around Stonehenge, I sat on one of the great rock slabs The rock felt cool even though the sun was shining. I ran my fingers over the lichen tracings which were as delicate as lace and I thought "hundreds of years from now when I am long gone, this rock and this lichen will look exactly the same as they do now." That was sixty years ago. As the author remarks in Sarum "the glory of the Island was made of stone." If wonders like Stonehenge thrill you, chances are good you'll love "Sarum" and the descriptive events swirling around the great astronomical monument are among the best in the book. The superb Salisbury Cathedral is also a nucleus of activity and a reflection of the English spirit and made of stone.This immense novel takes a long time to get through but perseverance is worth it and you'll come away thinking about Britain in a new light because you will feel yourself an observer. You were there when Neolithic men first came down from the North, you were there for the next 10,000 years. In the Fifth century Britain is over-run with the Romans, then Germanic tribes-the Goths, the Saxons- and the Viking marauders from the north. King Alfred the Great manages to keep his kingdom of Wessex from being conquered by its numerous enemies and from that small kingdom Britain the Island will become England the country, a diverse people under one flag. As the history panorama rolls by you'll visit Norman England after the Conquest. In the fullness of time men will marvel at the great Sarsens at Stonehenge but they have forgotten what the eerie circle of silent giants was for.Sarum follows the lives and fortunes of five families who lived on the Salisbury Plain- the family of Porteous, the Wilsons, the Masons, the Shockleys and the Godfreys. Families like these and the individual men and women who comprise them, some good, some bad, mold England over the centuries, give it its character, its uniqueness.In the fourteenth century come the reigns of John, the magnificent Edward I and his disastrous son Edward II. Salisbury Cathedral rises from the plain, a church so light and airy it looks from a distance as though it were made of lace. Yâ€™all, the math portion of this study guide is WAY more difficult than the actual exam!! I used it to study and was freaking out. I ended up going online to take mini lessons in college Algebra because I couldnâ€™t do many of the practice test questions without doing the lessons first. Right before the test, I took the practice test supplied by the ETS site. It was a breeze!!! The next day I took the test and it was almost identical to the ETS practice test. I could have saved myself a lot of panic and extra studying if I had used the ETS materials first.

I purchased 2 different Praxis books on Google Play and wanted a physical copy of a Praxis book so I can write notes in. I am very disappointed with this book. I do not believe that it gives any extra tips or any insightful information. It only contains one practice test for each of the subjects. It gives the answers after each test but lacks in the explanation part of said answers. I purchased it specifically for the writing part as I am struggling to pass that. It contains one prompt for the argumentative essay and one prompt for the other (passages) essay. I was very disappointed to discover that there wasnâ€™t any examples of essays, which the other 2 Google books included. Overall, I probably couldâ€™ve found better info on the internet.

Well written and organized self help book, but honestly it was way to extensive compared to the material that was on the actual test. Its a good study companion and was helpful but it's a little over the top. If you're able to comprehend and understand all the material in this book, I guarantee you a passing score on praxis. This book over prepares you for what is on the test. I found myself highly stressed out learning the material in this book thinking it was equivalent to what was on the exam. In reality, the Praxis Core test material is much easier. Especially the Math Portion. The math is this book doesn't match the skill level required for the test. I found this book most helpful studying for the reading and writing portion.

I ordered this book based on the reviews, but was very disappointed with the math in particular. The study guide and practice test contain lots of information that is not included on the Praxis exam. I found myself studying the quadratic formula, how to find the stand deviation and many other concepts that I did not need to waste time learning. In addition, there are errors in the book. The reading and writing sections are okay. I found the ETS practice tests MUCH more beneficial and more closely aligned with the exam itself.

I thought the reading and writing portions were easy to follow. I did well on the practice questions for those sections. However, the math section was too verbose in its explanations that left me feeling ill prepared for the practice questions. Once I did the questions, I felt like I wasted my time because they were easier than the topics covered. I also noticed some silly errors that were missed by the editors. I was reading about Surface Area and Volume and all of the sudden came a line that read, â€œFinally, when you find this phrase, the comma should go before â€˜soâ€™ not after â€˜soâ€™...â€ before it trailed back to the original sentence about which topic I was reading! Very odd!

This was a comprehensive test-prep book for my teaching exams. I was rusty before using the book, but passed with flying colors thanks to the guide. Extremely helpful. Lives up to its promise. Five big stars.

I graduated with a Bachelors Degree 18 years ago and have been away from an educational environment since. I attempted to take the Praxis Sample year online and found I have forgotten a lot of information. The Praxis books and test questions have really helped me get back into the thought process of education.

The reading and writing sections are pretty good. In Math, Numbers & Quantity, Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics are okay. Functions are confusing in the beginning and have some repetitive portions. Probability needs to be better explained with more examples. Also, there are some errors in the book for instance, on page 198 in the real world examples.

Very good cookbook.I've only tried 2 of the recipes so far, but they were both delicious. Steps are easy to follow and clearly written.The recipes are written to work with either a stove top (what I have) or electric pressure cooker.

First and foremost I want to say I must NOT be the target reader! This is a pretty good book great pictures and recipes look like they will work fine; however, I am a "fresh" cook whenever I can be. This is the main reason I ordered a pressure cooker. To speed up the sometimes time factor of cooking from scratch/fresh. Many of the recipes in the book require canned beans, canned tomatoes, frozen premade meatballs etc jarred spaghetti sauce. My purpose of the pressure cooker is to make these items where I can freeze or can them for use when needed. There a just a handful of these type recipes. If you are an experienced home cook, looking to use a pressure cooker to speed things up....this might not be the best book for you.

Have tried several recipes in this book since receiving it and my electric pressure cooker a month ago. I have since ordered another recipe book, but prefer this one because of the layout. Pictures and instructions are good and easy to follow. Doesn't usually require unusual or hard-to-find ingredients, although I don't usually have marmalade on hand, so I made it myself for the Orange Glazed Pork Chops recipe.The Orange Glazed Pork Chops pg 97 are wonderful -- tenderest pork I've ever eaten! Also the Perfected Pot Roast pg 41 can't be beat! I haven't tried the BBQ Beef Tips Pg 64 yet, but appreciate that there is an option to use prepared BBQ sauce, rather than taking the time to gather the ingredients, mix the mustard, Wor. sauce, br. sugar, garlic powder, etc.There are helpful "Make it Better" tips after each recipe, which make suggestions, such as substituting cream cheese in the place of mascarpone cheese, (which is good, b/c I've never heard of mascarpone cheese!) The Shrimp Alfredo pg 111 has a low-fat option. The recipes which call for alcohol have alternative suggestions; e.g.: use juice of 1 lemon to replace 1/4 cup dry white wine in the Chicken Fricassee pg 77.I plan on using this recipe book a lot!At the back of the book there are a few pages of Cook Times References, so you can use your own meat, beans, and pasta recipes and know how to long they need to cook.

If you *only* try the pot roast recipe, it's worth the price of admission. We haven't found anything we didn't like yet, but the pot roast is a recurring favorite, even while on the road in the RV! I do add the cabernet wine (as recommended) for its flavor, and I use unsalted beef broth since most fresh beef these days already has plenty...The "Perfected Pulled Pork" was made for our family beach house vacation this summer, and family members were literally calling dibs on any leftovers to have for the following day's lunch, while we were still eating dinner! (But I got back from the beach before they did.... Dibs!!!)

I like this cookbook because the recipes are made for normal people, like me.Â Cooking is not my favorite activity so when recipes call for out-of-the ordinary ingredients, I'm out-the-door.Â I bought this book after checking it out at my local library.Â The recipes looked do-able for my caliber of cooking skills so I purchased it here on Amazon.Â Tonight I tried the Orange Glazed Pork Chops.Â Check out my pictures and tell me what you think!Â I was afraid there would be an overload of orange, what with orange zest, orange juice, and orange marmalade.Â It came out moderately orangey, but not overpowering, per my husband who has low tolerance for tastes outside his normal comfort zone.Â He actually recommended that I make more of the glaze next time to have some on the side for dipping.Â The pork chops were tender and perfectly cooked.Â l'd like to give a shout-out to Amarals Market in Fall River, MA.Â Where else can you get 4 thick cut pork chops for $1.34 each??Â It cost me $5.37 for 4, specially cut for me by the butcher.Â Think of all the money you can save by having home-cooked meals in no time in your pressure cooker.Â So healthy, so economical, so fast!Â What more can you ask for?I look foward to trying all of the recipes in this book to expand my repertoire.Â I may even get Bob Warden's other book, Slow Food Fast, if I like the majority of the recipes in this book.Â As I mentioned, I like that I can recognize the ingredients, I have them on hand, or I can get them easily at any store.Â The pictures are terrific and encourage me to give the recipes a try.Â This book hit the spot for me.Â You may like it as well if you've read this far!

Wow, Best Pressure Cooker book ever! I buy a ton of cookbooks and seldom make recipes as is... usually peruse and get ideas. I made a couple recipes from this Bob Warden book and everything turned out wonderful. I am also learning techniques for using the Instant Pot that I can adapt other recipes. I highly recommend this cookbook. And all the recipes use common ingredients and I can see myself making down the road.

Girzone's simple tales of Joshua, or Jesus in a modern-day setting, have a certain spare charm, though to many readers they are too simplistic to be effective. In any case, Joshua is back, this time not in a story but in a reinvention of Jesus' New Testament parables. "The Parable of the Beautiful Garden" tells us that pollution is bad, while "The Parable of the Precious Seed" shows the folly of abortion. "The Parable of the Criminal and the Righteous Politician" is an appeal to ban executions. Many of Girzone's parables treat hypocrisy: "The Parable of the Unworthy Shepherd" and "The Terrorist and the Unwed Mother." Some of Girzone's parables make allusion to the originals, which Girzone feels are seen by contemporary readers as archaic and no longer relevant. But is this really so? Don't even the irreligious feel that the stories of the prodigal son or of the rich man are great life-lessons? Perhaps Girzone's feeble imitations, which are sure to draw a wide audience, will send contemporary readers back to the New Testament; they would be better served if they did so. I really enjoy the Joshua Series...looking forward to each new book in the series. Never a disappointment!

Not as good as his other books but it might take a few reads to get all of the meanings straight

I like these. I was expecting the parables I was familiar with from the Bible to be rewritten for modern day. Even though these were unrelated, they were still very good.

That time in Bogles takes you into the life of Grenadian Daniel as he spends the Easter holidays with his Kayak cousins. D E Ambrose does a wonderful job capturing the vernacular in an easy to understand yet well developed manner. Even to mainland Grenadians it is a history and cultural treasure chest as it captures the customs, activities and every day life that makes Carriacou such a unique place. Well done Mr Ambrose.

Like a guava cheese, boiled down to a morsel of sweet goodness, Ambrose manages, with great skill, to condense within sixty-six pages, a tasty account of Kayak life in the 80s, through his main characters Daniel and Elijah, in That Time in Bogles. Ambrose encapsulates the way of life in Carriacou, with a little sample of every aspect of the culture, through its festivals, music, ceremonies, food, characters- everything of significance gets a little mention: from taytay plums to headless chicken to very brief encounters with Bamboo, the old headmaster and Ras- with his â€œ imprisoned locksâ€. Ambrose reminds us of the easy pace and simplicity of the good old days- when people used to exchange Sunday meals, and pay respects to ancestral spirits- with libations. He makes me want to create memories of my own Time in Bogles. I could however do without having to â€œhit the pitâ€!And now I have eaten my guava cheese, I am ready for the rest of Sunday food, which Ambrose left back for later, because I am still hungry and so thirsty for some of Tantyâ€™s gospo juice.A beautiful, atmospheric tale of life on the sister isle of Carriacou. Great work Ambrose!

This book is honest, thought provoking, riveting. The deep traditions of Bogles, Carriacou is exposed before the reader taking us back in time to our own experiences growing up in any part of Grenada. The use of the local vernacular adds more flavor to the book making the reader anxious for more of Daniel's experiences. With the emergence of Facebook, Wats App, Face Time and other social media, the question that begs itself is are we losing those occasions that are near and dear to us that usually bring us together as families? Well done Mr. Ambrose on your publication.

I read this book without ever putting it down and thoroughly enjoyed it. That Time in Bogles is a page turner; no joke. All the treasured memories of growing up, or even living as an adult on the island, come flooding back, and if you weren't lucky enough to actually have had the experience, the author's deft skill at truly descriptive writing paints the pictures and creates the sounds that'll take you there. It's funny, too, and gave me many instances to laugh out loud. It's a Super Read!

Lomax's work has been documented in works like "The Land Where The Blues Began", "Alan Lomax The Man Who Recorded The World", "Alan Lomax Assistant In Charge-The Library Of Congress Letters 1935-1945" (a personal favorite), and also in a book of his selected writings.His work has (sometimes) been refuted in "Lost Delta Found", an interesting and informative look at Lomax and his research, which was named "The Fisk University-Library of Congress Coahoma County Study". It gives a slightly different account of the work these researchers (not just Lomax) did during that period. Also included are photos of day to day life in the region-a farm auction, the town of Saltville, Va., a river Baptism in Mineola, Tx., and great candid portraits-like John Bray-a 6'7" singer, a photo of Wade Ward's wife at home-happily listening to a recording of her husband, and a photo of Lomax and Wade Ward listening to a playback of his music. But I could go on-there's several photos of chain gangs at work (wearing wide striped prison uniforms) that Lomax recorded, an unidentified homestead in Va., a beautiful color portrait of the blind singer Horton Barker, standing on his farm with a bucket in one hand and his cane crooked over his other arm. Or an equally beautiful b&w photograph of Ada Combs, playing her banjo on her front porch, with small children sitting at her feet. She lived in a shack (another photo) several miles from any road in Kentucky. But I think you get the idea of what's here.Is this where you should start investigating Lomax and his journeys? Possibly not. This book works best in conjunction with some of the titles mentioned above. While it's a stand alone work, the more knowledge you have concerning Lomax, the era, the music and the performers he recorded, the better foundation you'll have for viewing these photographs. It's about time someone has published a book featuring Lomax's many photos (well over 700 on this trip) he took on his discoveries in the Southern region of the U.S.And this nice little book, with a well written text that puts things in proper perspective, is a good introduction to what Alan Lomax was recording on his travels. Included is a Forward by noted author William Ferris, "Alan Lomax: The Long Journey", and the main text written by Tom Piazza that gives the photographs and the era some foundation. Hopefully, someday soon the balance of Lomax's photographic work will be published. Visually, it's as important as the great music he recorded for posterity. And that's another point-if you're not familiar with the music Lomax recorded-check out some of the albums from this era and the various regions. It's real "American music" from a time long since gone. But thanks to Alan Lomax (and others like him) we have both a photographic/written record, and all this wonderful music.

Wonderful book with great photographs. Reveals so much about the times, the people and great research. If you enjoy American history this is a book to own.

I will be using this as supplementary material in my ethnomusicology course at Fairhaven College (Western Washington University) in Bellingham, WA.

I ordered this book as a gift for my son, but upon looking thru it, had to read it myself and thought it was great.
