Test of Courage: The Michel Thomas Story, by Christopher Robbins

From Library Journal

Robbins (Assassin, Air America) recounts the life of Michel Thomas, detailing his fight and survival in World War II. Born in Poland, Thomas moved to France as a young man after his vocal opposition to the Nazis put him in danger. After Germany took France, he was arrested and held in concentration and deportation camps before escaping to fight in the French Resistance and later in the U.S. Army. After the war, Thomas hunted war criminals as an agent with American Counter Intelligence. He could never forget his own experiences and the suffering that he had witnessed, and he felt that, as a survivor, he owed it to those who died to bear witness. This is a very compelling story of how Thomas fought his way from being a refugee to being a hero remarkable for his courage and ingenuity. Well researched and easy to read, this book reminds us that the world as a whole did little to stop the Holocaust but that many individuals did whatever they could to save lives. From Booklist

Michel Thomas lived under the Russian Empire, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, the French Third Republic, and Vichy France, a litany of regimes pointing to tempestuous experiences. Reporter Robbins vividly constructs Thomas' extraordinary story within the contexts of anti-Semitism, fascism, and war that propelled Moniek Kroskof, as he was born in 1914, across Europe. In 1940, he fled to the unoccupied zone of defeated France and joined the Resistance. The Vichy police, however, were soon onto him, and Robbins' fast-paced narration of his escape from their concentration camps packages physical stamina, courage, and close scrapes with death, from which he emerged to rejoin the Resistance's Gaullist faction, operating in the Lyons area. There, Robbins recounts, Thomas was interrogated by, but managed to dupe, infamous war criminal Klaus Barbie. This chronicle, which climaxes with Thomas' recruitment into the U.S. Army's military intelligence (wherein he investigated the Malmedy massacre and ran postwar sting operations to nab Nazis), is professionally presented, partaking of Thomas' skill, fortitude, and Jewish identity to contribute to the personal stories of resistance to Nazidom. Michel Thomas is as interesting a person as can be imagined. From his survival of Nazi Germany and Vichy France to his creation of an incredible language-teaching method. The sole shortcoming of the book is the author's tendency to diverge on a tangent and explain the history requisite to understanding the story. (Those unfamiliar with WWII history will doubtlessly appreciate this.) The work serves to chronicle one of the most impressive individuals living today. I highly recommend this book, and once you've read it, pick a language and check out " with Michel Thomas!"

Awesome!!!

QUICK REVIEWTest of Courage is an amazing book about an incredible man. It is about a man living around the time of World War II, and his experiences of escaping from the grasp of the Germans and trying to bring them to justice, and about his life after the war's outcome. It is definitely worth reading.FULL REVIEWThis story, about a Jew named Michel Thomas, is a story of amazement, with events including prejudice, imprisonment, escapes, impersonations, lies, scandals, love and overall brilliance. It is at times surprising, shocking, upsetting and most of all intriguing. It tells of a life based and shaped within racism and war. Michel Thomas grows up in this life and is forced to adapt and find his own way. Born in Poland, as a very intelligent boy, he was on the move from a young age to escape the betrayal and danger that came with people's racial hatred of the Jews. The first half of the book is about what went on in his life from before World War II through to the end of the war. This includes the incredible stories of being captured and escaping, of worming his way out of difficult circumstances, and of underground forces fighting against German domination. The second half of the book is about life after the war, in which he hunts down German criminals of war, and traps and breaks up underground Nazi resistance still trying to exist after the war. This book will amaze readers and will leave them in awe of Michel Thomas and his experiences.

The popular concept of the modern intellectual is the bipolar opposite of the popular concept of the modern soldier. Most, in our culture, accept this as Truth and hardly find it a point of reflection. One need not go to far back in time however, to see how the concept of the Renaissance man as artist, intellectual, and citizen soldier has only recently been smothered and killed off. Many today believe that there is nothing worth defending, that violence--no matter what--is not justified. Michel's life is a rage against those people. Michel's life has been spent between obtaining prestigious degrees, creating revolutionary teaching techniques, fighting the Gestapo, and hunting Nazis. A Jew who escaped from a concentration camp and joined the French Resistance, his entire family was slaughtered by Nazi Germany. His greatest pain comes from the fact that for years the world stood idly by as millions of Jews were sent to their deaths. Michel's life is a beacon in an ethically and morally baron landscape. Like the author, I should note that my opinion of this man is not biased, as I am not a Jew. But also like the author, I'd like to quote the Russian poet who said, "I am not a Jew, but in the presence of anti-Semites, I am Jewish."I give the book 4 stars because the organization of the book is sometimes awkward and I found that the percent narration to quotation was too far weighted towards the narration side. These points should not, however, distract the reader too much as this is simply a great story.

I believe this is the most talented man I have ever read about as regards an overall life. I couldn't determine anything particularly special about his childhood as to his relationship with his parents. From young manhood on his life is so outstanding it is difficult to believe....though I do so explicitly! This Polish Jew escaped from being in the ovens of the holocaust 2 or 3 times and those events are page turning. Then he becomes instrumental in the French Underground during WWII and has many harrowing experiences. Then he becomes a soldier in the U.S. Army (never yet being in the U.S.)and is instrumental in interrogating German prisoners...then develops an incredible program for learning foreign languages.[....]P>This book was so good for me I couldn't keep it to myself so I read it outloud to my wife and we both enjoyed it immensely. As to "smarts," all people are NOT created equally; 'tis a joy to read about a gifted human being.

Another brilliant book on a fascinating subject from Robbins. Once again, Christopher Robbins has produced an outstanding volume detailing a hitherto unknown subject. Much of the information presented in this book is available nowhere else. Michel Thomas' biography is a must-read for anyone interested in the triumph of humanity over the seemingly overwhelming forces of evil. As for the review of this book by Mr. Holm, I doubt he so much as glanced at this fine work... perhaps he should stick to writing reviews of computer games and computer gaming accessories, as he seems to be a prolific reviewer of that genre, and leave serious historical and biographical works to others more suited to the task.
