I guess there just isn't quite enough background material to put a lot of "meat on the bone," because there isn't that much here. Plenty of background and silky-smooth narrative on the Packard brothers, the Graves family and the period surrounding them. Yes, the last part of the book give us a little closer look at the watches themselves - but only through the narrative. The photos themselves are weak. I felt the background narrative on the European masters to be skimpy - there is a very rich tapestry of tales from the House of Patek Phillipe - and only an epidermal brushing here. A nod or two to some of the others, and that's it. On the other hand, it is a well-written book, the prose moves along and, if I had actually been more interested in the Packard and Graves family stories, it might have been more engaging for me.

BookreviewThe race to own the worlds most complicated pocket watch.A Grand Complication - The Race to Build the Worlds Most Legendary Watch, by Stacy Perman. Published by Atria Books, New York in February 2013. ISBN number: 978-1-4391-9008-1. 344 pages (plus 8 pages of color plates), 24 x 16 cm, hardbound, dust jacket. Numerous b&w illustrations in the text, glossary, 30 p. of endnotes, 3 p. bibliography and 13 p. index. The book is available from Amazon.com and other sources at about US$ 20.------------------------------------------------------------------.Passionate collectors of complicated pocket watches may remember that the most expensive watch ever sold at auction, for US$ 11,002,500.-, was lot No. 7, at Sotheby's in New York, on 2 December 1999, a one of kind, ultra complicated pocket watch, bearing the number 198 385, completed 1932, made by Patek Philippe, Geneva. That watch features 24 additional `complications` beyond keeping time. It was made especially for the New York banker Henry Graves Jr., who had specified in great detail what functions the watch should perform and how it should look. The book under review opens with describing the scene at Sotheby's that afternoon - and then takes some 300 pages to examine and describe how a market for a significant number of this kind of technology driven, ultra complicated watches developed in the United States in the first three decades f the 20th century. Its author is a New York based, business journalist, who in 2009 (on occasion of the 10th anniversary of the auction) wrote an article on the subject for Business Week, but discovered that the story was better suited for a book length piece than a few pages in a magazine. The `Graves Supercomplication' represents the endpoint of a decades' long, intense competition between two American business tycoons, who both - though of vastly differing style and temperament - are a product of their time, characterized by boundless optimism, belief in technology, and the excesses that resulted in the great depression. Ward Packard from Ohio, the self made founder of the Packard luxury brand of automobiles, and Henry Graves of New York, born into a moneyed banking dynasty, both developed an infatuation with high-grade, complicated timekeeping mechanisms. Both started ordering bespoke, custom built complicated watches made in Switzerland (primarily by Patek Philippe). The author spins a captivating story describing the `arms race' between the two protagonists to not only dream up ever more complex watches, but to actually have these machines produced in steel and gold.Perman writes a suspenseful book, but is obviously more at ease in analyzing the social, cultural and financial angles of the story, than delving into the technological/horological nuances of the mechanical wonders that she writes about. The reader interested primarily in the physical objects, their function or how they were designed and made, will be richly rewarded with countless fascinating morsels of horology (and occasionally be annoyed by misquoted or misunderstood details) but t its heart the book is a social commentary and not a book about complicated watches. Readers who are horological collectors however may find Permans' descriptions of and insights on the contemporary auction market for watches of interest.Fortunat F. Mueller-Maerki, Sussex NJ, February 2013

Bought this book because I love watches, but put off starting it for fear it would be a dry account of watch making. Couldn't have been more wrong! It's a very well written history of my dream timepieces and the men lucky enough to acquire them. Reads like a novel, but packed with interesting facts about lifestyles of America's wealthy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Even includes news about very recent watch auctions. Would recommend this book to every one. Bought this as a Kindle book, but will probably buy the hardback so I can share it with friends.

I'll make this brief. I've read only two chapters. The first recounts the sale of the world's most expensive watch at Sotheby's in 1999. It reads like a classic 'whodunit' or a spy novel by John LeCarre. Riveting. I have a passing interest in watches and bought it for the story of James W. Packard who founded the Packard Motor Car Company. I am now totally hooked - in great part because it's beautifully written - not just a recitation of the facts but a grippingly told story. I am hooked ;)

Great insight into the life and times of the wealthy in the 19th and early 20th century. Fascinating look at the history of the best watches made.

Fascinating read about Henry Graves and James Packard and their fascination with timepieces. The book also provides fascinating historical context on the development of automobiles and the lives of NYC financiers - highly recommended!!

... For those passionate about watches. For those curious about the circumstances surrounding the greatest watches ever commissioned, this is a must read, as this story is told in its entirety nowhere else.Perhaps a bit heavy on the period detail, it's a good read nonetheless. I wish my wife had written it as it would have informed an understanding of my love for horology that escapes her still, but as in all things great and small, herein lies a story worth telling.Terry N. RussellMay 2013

An interesting enough book, but the watches seemed like a parallel story to the detailed biographies which seemed to take centre stage. They were interesting in their own right, also as a history of early carmaking/electrical engineering and so on, but this was only tangentially related to the watch story. I also found there was not much technical depth or special insight into the actual watch designs. All in all, a good book that could have been an awesome book if approached from a slightly different angle.
