Review
“A Wrinkle in Time is one of my favorite books of all time. I've read it so often, I know it by heart. Meg Murry was my hero growing up. I wanted glasses and braces and my parents to stick me in an attic bedroom. And I so wanted to save Charles Wallace from IT.†―Meg Cabot on A Wrinkle in Time“A book that every young person should read, a book that provides a road map for seeking knowledge and compassion even at the worst of times, a book to make the world a better place.†―Cory Doctorow on A Wrinkle in Time“A suspenseful, life-and-death drama that is of believable cosmic significance. Complex and rich in mystical religious insights, this is breathtaking entertainment.†―School Library Journal, starred review on A Wind in the Door“Madeleine L'Engle mixes classical theology, contemporary family life, and futuristic science fiction to make a completely convincing tale that should put under its spell both readers familiar with the Murrys and those meeting them for the first time.†―The New York Times Book Review on A Wind in the Door“An intricately woven fantasy ... Theme is L'Engle's greatest forte, and once again she proves this with a compelling plot, rich in style that vibrates with provocative thoughts on universal love, individual caring, and the need for the joy in living.†―Booklist, starred review on A Swiftly Tilting Planet“This will be enjoyed for its suspense and humor as well as its other levels of meaning.†―Kirkus Reviews on Many Waters“L'Engle blends speculative fiction with biblical theology to create another provocative spellbinding tale.†―Philadelphia Inquirer on Many Waters“L'Engle has again achieved the award-winning style of A Wrinkle in Time ... Highly recommended.†―VOYA on An Acceptable Time

I read this series many years ago, in seventh grade. I really enjoyed it but haven't read it since then. I have been meaning to reread it but keep putting it off because, like most readers, my To Read list is quite long and just keeps on growing. For that reason, my review will focus on this particular set of books (Square Fish paperback box set, 2007).I had purchased the first four books of the series (different edition) a few years back at the local used book store and was looking the complete the series. I was having trouble finding the correct edition of the fifth book to match my set when I saw this complete set for sale on Amazon. I've had it on my wish list for a while and had almost purchased it several times. I noticed that the price was at $10.99 and thought that was a great deal but I hesitated for a day or two and the next time I checked, it was up to $23 (still, technically, a decent price considering that each of these books costs over $5, individually). I was angry with myself for not jumping at the super low price, so I kept checking back. Well, a day or so later, it went back down to $10.99 and I went for it. It would be foolish NOT to, right? So, what I got is a VERY nice set of paperbacks. Normally, I try to get hardcover but I preferred the colors and artwork on these. They really are beautiful and I love the case, which is made of sturdy, glossy cardboard and has some of the same artwork from the covers. I had this delivered to my work and all of my coworkers and boss commented on what a nice set it was. The only drawback is that the case is a little tight. I can't just pull a book out while it's sitting on my shelf. I have to take the whole case out, turn it upside down and shake it a bit to pry a book out.(I am posting pictures to show which edition I am talking about because I've seen reviews from different editions get combined on one page. I am also including a picture of the set on my shelf to show size in relation to other books.)
I read the first 2 books as a kid and loved them. I agree they are a bit out of date now, but my son thoroughly enjoyed the first 4 books. Would give 5 stars for my kid's enjoyment of these 4.Fortunately, we still read with him each evening because Book 5, Many Waters, is a departure from the other books in its maturity level.SPOILER - But important for parents if interested:I did not see this info in any reviews here.....As mentioned, book 5 is written for a more mature audience than my 10 year old son. I did not preview this book nor read other review sites before launching into it thinking it was similar to the first 4.Yes, it has a definite religious theme to it, but that is not the big deal to me....Some reviews on other sites refer to the book as a 'coming of age' book. I would more describe it as a sexual awakening. While not explicit, there is no question that it is referring to sex between characters, seduction, and there is a mention of bare boobs. The boob thing didn't freak me out, but the material escalates from there. We have continued to read it to my son with some explanations/some glossing over but it gets super cringy in parts. My husbamd and I had to discuss stopping reading it and saving it for a year or two. I don't consider myself a prudish person, but I was not quite ready for this sort of material for my 10 year old boy.Obviously, I don't think it is absolutely horrible and I feel my son is at (or beyond) the age for these discussions. I do feel that other parents may want to be aware of this information.
Wonderful series. It was my favorite when I was a child and I've read it several times. My daughter thought it was boring but I'm still giving it 5 stars. It's not the author's fault my daughter has bad taste.
These books are decades old, but even reading them 30 years later after the first time I picked up "A Wrinkle In Time", they are every bit as entrancing. The story as been summed up and reviewed time and time again, so for me at this point it's more about trying to convey my love of these books and pass that on to at least one other person if I can. It's hard not to relate to Meg and Charles, and their feelings of being different and always on the outside. (Truthfully, though, at the time of my first reading their dog was my favorite character!) I fell in love with the trio of 'Mrs.' as soon as they appeared on the pages before me, and though I struggled to understand what exactly a tesseract was, it was they who made me fall in love with science. I am giddy to see the movie coming out soon, but also worried that it will be impossible to do justice to these books. "Many Waters" is my favorite of the quintet, and works well as a stand-alone novel. If Ms. L'Engle had written nothing but books about this particular family of characters, I would have been a very happy reader.
I went to a women's retreat and the program leader talked about Madeleine L'Engle. I came to the conclusion I'm the only adult woman who had never read A Wrinkle in Time. I ordered this set after the retreat and finished reading all 5 books in two weeks--couldn't put them down. I am a writing instructor for graduate nurses, so I stay centered in a lot of dense scholarly writing and pedagogy. It was sheer bliss reading these imaginative stories that allude to the wonder in the universe--and a kind of knowing that involves free imagination and ultimate trust, without which nothing new would every happen, and ultimate beauty might be missed. I've started reading LEngle's Walking on Water, and am as impressed with her reflections on art, creativity, imagination, and the appreciation of literature as I am with her magical reality children's series.
Bought this for myself to read after surgery during my recovery period. I remember reading the first book in the set as a child and loving it. This set is very nice and I loved reading them. Convenient that the books are in a little box so that it's easy to lend the books to others. The set came on time and was properly packaged by Amazon. :)
