Why I Think Boys May Enjoy ThisIf ever there was a book series that could be used to introduce the concept of “anti-hero” to a middle grade audience, it is Artemis Fowl (or, you know, my novella Anchihiiroo – Origin of an Antihero, but I digress). Artemis Fowl II, in the debut book of this series, is the very definition of someone willing to do anything it takes (even a little kidnapping and ransom-demanding) for what is ultimately a good cause (trying to save his mother). One of my favorite things about this series is that Artemis, being a genius, has a very large vocabulary. The diction in this book is a lot more advanced and complex than many other middle grade books and I personally used it as a benchmark in my own writing for not talking down to a young audience (which I find many, many middle grade and even young adult books do). Colfer has found that great sweet spot to challenge young readers without dismissing their capabilities.That being said, the story is a simple one that is very easy and fun to follow. The basic frame of the story follows the “heist” format. There are twists and turns and plans on top of plans. Sometimes they work and sometimes they fail. Sometimes they seem to fail but end up working (think of a fairy tale version of Ocean’s 11). Apparently Colfer himself has referred to it as “Die Hard with fairies” with which I can’t argue. Colfer has created his own sub-society of magical fairy creatures that presents the underlying mystery and magic to the series. At the same time, Artemis is a regular (well, as regular as a multi-millionaire genius pre-teen with a bit of an evil mastermind complex can be) human kid who breaks open the mysteries of this underworld.When I first discovered this series years ago, I was excited to find a middle grade series that had a protagonist that wasn’t your bubbly “chosen one” stereotype. Artemis, due to his intelligence and resources, is way deeper and more complex than your typical middle grade hero. That alone is worth a read. Couple that with a fun and colorful underworld full of faeries, gnomes, and other supernatural beings and it’s a can’t-miss.Content/AppropriatenessThis book is more than appropriate for the youngest of readers. Any violence is cartoonish in nature, for the most part. There are no language or sexual content concerns either.As the series goes on, there are points that get a little darker, but never does Colfer waver from the PG family friendly nature of this first book.As an aside: there is also a wonderful graphic novel adaptation of this first book that can serve to help a struggling reader or a reader who might need a little more visual aides (or just someone who really likes graphic novels!).Rating5/5 Giant Cartoon Mallets from Toonopolis, The Blog's Books for Boys Review

I actually enjoyed this off-beat little book more than I had expected, considering it has taken me years to getting back to reading it. I originally bought it for a defunct e-reader connected to another store--and I never finished reading it. I started over at the beginning, since it had been so long since I first sat down with it. This is an interesting, quick read. The pacing is pretty good. The story is quite funny and charming at times.I do wish there had been some formatting differences for the rather frequent point-of-view shifts. Sometimes there was no indicator, such as spacing, asterisks, a divider, etc. There was a lot of "gross-out" content. I really grew a little weary of the dwarf and his flapped trousers... For parents, there is a bit of light swearing consisting of mostly "damn" and "hell" (and a few made-up and implied explicitive phrases). Some may be concerned about the death of a rabbit at the hands of the flap-trousered dwarf.Overall, this was an entertaining read. I will likely be "back" for book two, once I've cleared up some of my Kindle slush-pile. I don't regret re-purchasing this in Kindle format, at least, it filled a few sessions of light reading for a few days.

I made it a third of the way through this drivel before calling it quits. I had no preconceptions about this beyond seeing that is had a Disney designation on the title page. (Kindle format) The main character should be Foul, not Fowl. Rotten genius of a boy, Artemis does not say he is looking for gold to cure his mother or find his father. He is looking to revive the coffers of a thieving family. I see Disneyworld thrown out there quite often, guess a plug for the outrageously overpriced theme park (Anyone pick up that Artemis is the genius (f)owl from Disney's The Sword In The Stone?) The characters are one dimentional, the story went all over the place. While I had no problems with the vocabulary, who exactly is the author targeting?I My last point, and this can be said of every aspect of Amazon reviews, from books to other products: If you like something a lot, give it a 5 star rating. Hate it? Give it one. I get not being able to change your mind and not able to fix it here, but if you just flat out rate a book wrong, you do a disservice to the author. I have this book two stars only because someone took the time to write and publish a book. The only 1's I door out to to poorly written and poorly edited books. No excuse for bad editing.

This is a great introduction to Sci-Fi for any kid in love with fantasy. Colfer mixes "real" magic with scientific advancements to create a race of creatures utterly and believably delightful. The snarky and pithy dialogue mixed with potty humor (e.g. a dwarf who eats and digests soil is constantly farting dirt missiles at would-be assailants) is sure to captivate the 9-12 age range of both genders. There is a redemptive quality of the book. There's really only one character (the main female role) that is entirely "good" but nearly every character has positive moral growth even with all the stealing, fighting and poor model behavior throughout.

Jocko Willink and Leif Babin have an excellent skill at taking a simple and intuitive mindset and communicating how this mindset is very key in succeeding at leading yourself or others to success. Whether its overseas or in an office high-rise they claim that this mindset will lead to higher success and growth as a person and they have convinced me of this claim through this book.What I like most about this book is that a lot of the ideas in it are intuitive or already very well known. What makes this book special is the way in which they tie a lot of these simple ideas together into an easy-to-understand mindset. They do so in a straight-forward and honest way, backing up their claims from their time in combat or from the numerous consulting experiences with various companies. While it is obvious that Willink and Babin have a lot of experience in leadership, they do a great job at presenting the content in a down-to-earth manner that is relatable. I like that they even go into detail about mistakes they have made and how they learned from it themselves. Someone who can identify their own mistakes and learn from them, to me, shows a mastery of the willingness to learn and to grow as an individual. Anyone could benefit from learning from someone with this mastery and both of these men have it.Pros:*Written in a straight-forward, down-to-earth way*Applicable advice for anyone in any situation*Very good presentation and integration of intuitive or already-known ideasCons:*NoneAdditional Considerations:Jocko has a great podcast he puts out weekly. It seems I'm in the minority here but I didn't love this book. I love leadership and I love discipline and I was hoping to hear some unique thoughts about these subjects. I hadn't heard an interview from the author and was very excited about this book.I simply didn't find any of the principles on leadership or discipline to be anything more than common knowledge. If you read books on leadership before or on discipline or military books, there doesn't seem to be anything unique here, in my opinion.If you love War Stories especially in a modern context, this is an excellent book. It's well-written and fun to read. I just didn't particularly find it helpful.For leadership technique or principles of self discipline, I would not recommend this book. For stories of overcoming challenges in Modern Combat and conflict, I would recommend this book.But ultimately, given my expectations, I was pretty disappointed. I'm also disappointed at the great reviews it's got because I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here!* Edit: I went back and read some of the lower reviews and I concur with all of them. The 90% five star reviews are only right if you love War Stories and don't really care about leadership or self discipline.

If you were to judge a book by its cover, you would think that "Extreme Ownership: How US Navy SEALs Lead And Win" is a book which would only be applicable to military veterans and historians. You would be wrong.This isn't a self-help book from some "gurus", nor does it provide an ideology or set of steps for how to approach specific problems. Extreme Ownership is a mindset which applies to everything you do. Authors Jocko Willink and Leif Babin have crafted a guidebook for success in all ventures of life. They explain hard-learned principles of leadership, which they experienced first-hand as US Navy SEALs, specifically in and around their 2006 deployment to Ramadi, Iraq, one of the most dangerous places and times in the war. These principles can be applied to any relationships or walks of life; they are simple enough for anyone to understand, and broad enough to use in any situation.The book is separated into 12 chapters, each which highlights a principle of leadership. Each chapter is then broken into 3 seconds. The first section is an anecdote providing an example of how US Navy SEALs use their military experience to demonstrate each principle. The second section is how & why the principle works. The third section is an example of how that principle transforms from the battlefield, into world of businesses of all types & sizes, as experienced by the authors and their customers. It is very easy to read and understand, despite the regular use of military jargon (which is either footnoted or explained so even non-military readers can comprehend).Military recruits & officers, parents, corporate executives, students, low-level management, spouses, shop foremen, independent contractors, and sole proprietors will all benefit from the lessons of Extreme Ownership.If you feel you're stuck in a rut, lacking self-discipline, or perhaps know someone who simply needs to improve their lot, this book is an excellent starting point.I have personally read & completed this book, but I will never be done with the concept of "Extreme Ownership". Being able to take ownership and be accountable for the things around me has truly changed my life for the better.

The book is a very useful companion to the DVD series. I find a book so much easier to use as a reference. This book, however, only goes half way. There is no real index beyond lecture titles. The bibliography looks very complete. There is a short glossary, but again, without any page references.

I've listened to 18 of the 24 discs since purchasing this course (many times listening 2 or 3 times to fully "get" it). I find my meditation practice improving, and that I'm living more mindfully and in the moment.The instructor is engaging, has a pleasant voice, and is easy to follow. I hope I can find more courses like this!

I was forced to read this book in high school, and didn't like it. As I got older, I found myself more and more interested in the meaty side of history (as opposed to just the glamorous parts), and I suddenly remembered this book. After reading it twice now, I can say it stands out as one of the best fictional history books I have ever read. If you wanted to get a sense of the history of England, and also what life was like for everyday people during various periods in the past, check this one out! I am going to start reading all of Edward Rutherfurd's books, based on this one.

Quite a thorough saga! Sarum really is the story of the history of England, from prehistoric times to the modern era. By taking several family lines and creating a series of interlocking stories set in the Salisbury, England area, but sometimes 100s of years after each other, I got the feeling of being there during each major period of history. My wife and I now are planning a trip to Salisbury to see and feel the area that we have come to know through these powerful stories. Each story, although new, felt familiar because the descendants of the previous stories were the characters in the next story and some of the physical and behavior traits were carried along the generations. A fascinating way to learn history. I could put the book down after each section for the first 500 pages, but after that, the next 300 pages pulled me along in a trance.

I was in my grandparents' living room, thirteen years old, and saw this book laying on the coffee table. A tome, almost a thousand pages, no dust jacket to clue me in to the content. I picked it up and opened to the first page: "First, before the beginning of Sarum, the world was a colder and darker place......" That was it for me, I was in. I devoured the book with abandon, nevermind the occasional sentence that runs on for a whole paragraph, dizzying me with confusion. This was my introduction to historical fiction, and what an introduction it was. It was the first book in a lifelong obsession with the genre. The way that Rutherford handles his subject, telling the story of a particular place over time, using characters that change but families that don't, is genius. I have since read his others but Sarum will always be my favorite.

Mr. Rutherford has done an amazing job of following the descendants of a handful of families based around Salisbury, Engalnd through time. Starting around 9000bc and progressing to 1980 and creating vignettes at important points in England's history showing how those historical events impacted the families at each point in time. It is a great social history.I found it quite Interesting how the author showed physical features and personality traits descending through the lines. And I was moved by the way the reader was put I to the various battles, ie the Roman defeat of Bodeccia and her Iceni followers, Alfred and the Vikings, The War of the Roses etc., as well as other events. His approach brought greater understanding to the events.I thought that the building of Stone Henge and Salisbury Cathederal was a little too drawn out and thus limited what could be presented in other events. But the book is dedicated to the cathedral and thus I give him his leeway.Some have given lesser ratings complaining about the book bogging down at points but I personally thought it moved along much better than some of James A Michener and others' works. I think the book will be well received by those who enjoy reading about history and not so well by those who don't.

I have noted with interest the number of reviewers who are not charmed by "Sarum." If a person is not enthralled by Stonehenge he might not be enthralled with this epic book. Perhaps a person has to be a Stonehenge junkie to enjoy Rutherfurd's sojourn into Neolithic Britain and the long, long road to the present. Many years ago, when you could still roam around Stonehenge, I sat on one of the great rock slabs The rock felt cool even though the sun was shining. I ran my fingers over the lichen tracings which were as delicate as lace and I thought "hundreds of years from now when I am long gone, this rock and this lichen will look exactly the same as they do now." That was sixty years ago. As the author remarks in Sarum "the glory of the Island was made of stone." If wonders like Stonehenge thrill you, chances are good you'll love "Sarum" and the descriptive events swirling around the great astronomical monument are among the best in the book. The superb Salisbury Cathedral is also a nucleus of activity and a reflection of the English spirit and made of stone.This immense novel takes a long time to get through but perseverance is worth it and you'll come away thinking about Britain in a new light because you will feel yourself an observer. You were there when Neolithic men first came down from the North, you were there for the next 10,000 years. In the Fifth century Britain is over-run with the Romans, then Germanic tribes-the Goths, the Saxons- and the Viking marauders from the north. King Alfred the Great manages to keep his kingdom of Wessex from being conquered by its numerous enemies and from that small kingdom Britain the Island will become England the country, a diverse people under one flag. As the history panorama rolls by you'll visit Norman England after the Conquest. In the fullness of time men will marvel at the great Sarsens at Stonehenge but they have forgotten what the eerie circle of silent giants was for.Sarum follows the lives and fortunes of five families who lived on the Salisbury Plain- the family of Porteous, the Wilsons, the Masons, the Shockleys and the Godfreys. Families like these and the individual men and women who comprise them, some good, some bad, mold England over the centuries, give it its character, its uniqueness.In the fourteenth century come the reigns of John, the magnificent Edward I and his disastrous son Edward II. Salisbury Cathedral rises from the plain, a church so light and airy it looks from a distance as though it were made of lace. The Black Death, a bacterial disease spread by fleas fro rats, decimates the population of Europe. In the Fifteenth Century Henry V wins the battle of Agincourt. The Tudor dynasty emerges after the death of Richard III. Henry VIII dissolves the monasteries, England is plunged into Catholicism by Mary and Elizabeth I wrenches the country back to Protestantism. She demands the Cathedral at Salisbury to contribute money to fight the Spanish Armada, knowing that the Spanish ships are positioning themselves for invasion. She executes her mortal enemy, "the Frenchified Mary Queen of Scots."In the Sixteenth Century James I and his son Charles, devoutly believing they rule by divine right, try to govern Scotland as well as England without understanding either country. In the next century Cromwell, the Restoration. Citizens are buffeted one way then the other. The nineteenth century. Napoleon. Nelson. The little frigate called the "Euryalus" is tucked right next to Nelson's ship the "Victory" at the Battle of Trafalgar. "We were Nelson's watchdog" the seamen said. "We were his extra eye and arm." But Nelson in his admiral's jacket covered with flashing medals strides across the deck, giving orders, an easy mark for an enemy sniper. A concise description of the great battle which destroyed the French navy forever is written into the story. The British nation becomes an Empire, stretching around the globe.
