I will echo many reviews here: this book is a fantastic window into the world of icons and their functions. While giving a little history of each of the four icons he uses to illustrate his points, Nouwen spends a lot of time explaining how he came to see different theological and spiritual truths within the icons. Praying with (not to) the icons provides a different medium for prayer that is bound to be helpful for those that try.This book cannot be recommended enough, and a huge benefit is that the language is clear, concise, and to the point. This is not like other heady religious books.

I've never read anything by Nouwen that I didn't like. I have been to Eastern Europe several times, and each time, tried to purchase an icon or some religious artifact to remember my trip by. I had seen Orthodox Christians praying with Icons (not praying to, mind you...praying with), and wanted a better understanding of the practice. Nouwen writes that they are to be used like windows into heaven, not as base objects to be worshiped. Nouwen actually takes several icons and explains the meaning behind them (such as the empty space at the table in Rublev's "Trinity") in order to help the reader learn to focus on certain aspects of faith. Offers clarity to the practice of praying with icons. A good companion piece to Linette Martin's "Sacred Doorways".

Love this book re how to pray with icons... but was disappointed with this new publication format... The original was much more expressive of the purpose of Nouwen's book...

While I have strongly differing opinions on the icons he reviews, Nouwen is always worth reading. In the case of the Trinity icon he lets his political views slip through.

The title says it all. Understanding the icon in order to further one’s relationship with the Lord.

This is a beautiful book to read if you have an interest in the beautiful icons and the meaning behind them. Perhaps you have seen these icons in Catholic and Orthodox churches here and abroad, icons are a Liturgical Art, and have significant meaning behind each step in the painting process. The author has done a beautiful job of explaining the meaning as he sees it with each of five icons. It is a beautiful book to own.

Exactly that for which I was looking; a small yet mighty book by a favorite author on a subject of great interest. This is well thought out, the icon's researched, studied and as understanding and spiritual insights were expanded, adimiration grew and the icons became treasured and loved. The author shared his inspiration and explanations with warmth, wisdom and clarity.

Fabulous book but beware the color version of the 4 icons are in the book right after the cover and are not specified in the Table of Contents. The chapter versions are in black and white which are NOT helpful for the full experience.

Tom Shales and James Andrew Miller wrote one of my favorite TV books ever, Live From New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live, as Told By Its Stars, Writers and Guests. That book, a huge compilation of interviews with dozens of people tied to SNL did a great job of detailing the creation, development, constant reinvention, and gossip behind one of our most beloved (and at times, reviled) shows.Unfortunately, Shales and Miller's technique falls flat when it comes to the history of ESPN. The problem is that ESPN doesn't really provide its own established narrative for the reader (and Shales and Miller, I would imagine) to fall back on. While ESPN certainly has aired several memorable sporting events, to most viewers, the events themselves are of importance, not the personalities and stories behind them. While the behind the scenes gossip from some of ESPN's most well known personalities, such as Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann are interesting, and often fun, the book often feels more like rehashing of contract negotiations and business dealings than a trip through ESPN history. Once the book gets past building the foundations of the network and its early days (which are truly the best part of the book), it seems like an endless stream of narratives about not much tied together by even less. The book is begging for a narrative that the interviews presented do not really provide.Most puzzling is that a book about a sports network provides so few anecdotes about specific moments in sports or from sports personalities. Perhaps this is because, while ESPN has covered its fair share of sports news, it seldom has carried the biggest events. Or perhaps it is because Shales and Miller intended the book to focus solely on the business and network itself without the context of the sporting events that shaped it. Unfortunately, this is a bit like writing a book about SNL without mentioning skits or guest stars.If you're a fan of the network, you probably should pick up the book. But if you're just a casual sports fan who only watches ESPN when your team is on, you're going to find the book a slog. Shales and Miller seemed to have a hard time figuring out what they wanted to do with the book, and as a result, it's a major disappointment.

I've been watching ESPN for 25 years and remember those early days when they were so much more understated than "The Worldwide Leader" we know today. I wanted to get the juicy details and find out how this business evolved from far-fetched start-up featuring Aussie Rules football and lumberjack competitions to THE sports authority across the globe.The authors only occasionally interject their own material, relying instead on recollections from seemingly everyone who ever worked at ESPN. This structure bothered me at first, as I didn't want to just read people telling stories about their experiences, but I came to love it after a while, because the cast of colorful characters -- often at odds with one another, especially in the early days -- are some of the most electrifying personalities I've ever read about.It's amazing ESPN got going and survived. In fact, I found the first part of the book the most compelling. What it takes to start a venture like ESPN is almost unfathomable, and I love against-all-odds success stories. Broadcasts without any sound, wrangling for the rights to sporting events no one else wanted, a few female employees turning tricks in a NY hotel room (!), Machiavellian internal politics, nail biter financial daring... this story has it all.I do question some of the editing and focus of the stories -- sometimes the authors tired me with endless tales of one subject (Tony Kornheiser not working out on Monday Night Football) and not enough details about others (the untimely death of Tom Mees). And the last 10% of the book wore on my nerves -- I just got tired of the self-congratulatory storytelling by that point.It's too long, but it's still an absorbing read. I was also inspired by the work ethic and commitment of the people who made ESPN tick. For all their pros and cons, they're some of the most talented, hard working, driven, creative people you'll ever read about, and their stories made me reflect on my own professional commitments.It may take a while to get through, and there are some boring parts, but this is very much a worthwhile read.

This is an excellent historical narrative about ESPN and its beginnings. There is a concentration on the main group of principals whocreated and nurtured the network from its earliest days, and a behind-the-scenes descriptive account of who financed and supported the fledging network in the late 1970's & early 1980's. Then, from the boardroom and the control rooms, the book starts to interview personalities and talent. Every famous anchor & co-anchor was interviewed and offered a unique perspective about their tenure there or the atmosphere there during their time there. An interesting book that mainly deals with the beginning of the network and gradually moves into the present day. I recommend it to anyone interested in ESPN or network television.

There are some great tidbits in between lots of rambling uninteresting sections. It took me a few years to finish this because it was somewhat disjointed and boring at parts. I haven't read my oral histories, so maybe that is par for the course. Personally, I would have preferred to read more about the business challenges and their approach to innovation/R&D, and less about internal culture dynamics and employee discipline. ESPN.com and ESPN3/360 are also only mentioned in passing, even though this book was just published in December, 2011.

I can't tell you how elated I am to have been recommended this very profound yet quick read that kept me riveted from beginning to end... It's only 118 pages and visually spaced for a quick and easy flow. It's the kind of book you read and some months or years later re-read again like it's the first time all over .... Consider it a life manual to keep referring back to... I implore you to take the time to ingest this important spiritual work....... and may it enrich you as greatly as it has enriched me....

A great introduction to the idea of loving kindness and how to nurture love, compassion and understanding in ourselves and for the people around us. It is a short but profound read that can instantly change the way we approach misunderstandings and take ownership of our own suffering and unhappiness. The book includes simple, straightforward advice to resolve these disconnections by becoming more in flow with the present moment and nurturing the best and most positive parts of us and those we love. A must read for anyone who hopes to "do no harm" in all of their relationships and wants more inner peace and contentment.

Beautiful book, simply written, but hits home with all the basic truths. Because, really, it is all so simple. We just have to listen and do. Wise words from such a wise man. Excellent price, I have the Kindle version. I can carry it with me and use it for inspiration when needed.

These aren't earth shattering revelations or passages that will suddenly change your life. Instead, these are reminders of how to live a loving life, of how to be a loving person. While they're great to read at any time, I like reading one before bed or when I'm having a particularly hard day.

This book is excellent. The language is simple, yet profound. Very practical advice on how to care for others and oneself in many areas of life. I am Christian, but the way it is written is deeply resonant with my values. It is not explicitly a Buddhist text, as there are only a few (4 or 5?) statements referring to Buddhism in the whole book. I recommend "How to Love" for anyone regardless of creed or religious background!

How to Love is an amazing book. It is a small book but is a true testament that big things come in small packages. Recommended for anyone and everyone who wants to practice and nurture true love. I will treasure the teachings of the author and hope to put his lessons of compassion and loving kindness to work in both my mind and my spirit. Thanks!

Michael G. Moore is Professor of Education at The Pennsylvania State University, where he has taught graduate courses in distance education for 23 years. He is known in academic circles for leadership in the scholarly study of distance education. He published the first statement of theory about distance education in English in 1972, and has achieved a number of other "firsts" in the field. These include teaching the first course in this subject at University of Wisconsin in the mid 70's, conceiving and helping to start the national annual conference there, and establishing an online international network (Distance Education Online Symposium). He has practical experience of teaching in all technologies and of most client groups, has supervised numerous doctoral and Master's degrees, and is emphasizing application of Web 2.0 technologies in teaching his Master's degree online. Moore has over 30 years of unbroken service as an editor of distance education journals, and has served on editorial boards of all the main journals and on program committees for the International Council for Distance Education and similar organizations. He has published books, over 100 articles and monographs, and given presentations in over 30 countries. This book is outdated, and (for an academic text) at times a little precursory in its approach. The authors talk at great length about how quickly the field changes, but the book was published in 2005 and doesn't seem to have received any updates since then. Like other reviewers have said, the "systems view" of distance education is an interesting approach to the topic of distance education, but I can't say much more for it. It was a required text for one of my Master's courses at Penn State. I'm glad I rented rather than buying--not a book I would reference again outside of the required context.

This book is no longer timely. It was published/copyrighted in 2005. The information that it contains is no longer applicable to modern distance/virtual learning. The author downplays audio and video streaming related to distance learning because in 2005 it was not as prevalent. Futhermore, it does not take into account the trend of ALL colleges and universities moving in this direction.The systems view information regarding course design is good - but everything else is outdated.I recommend you find another book that is more timely.

Perhaps this book was written for policy-makers. It's not very specific about curriculum design nor technology, if that's what you are looking for. It does a pretty job of citing other research and case-studies of implementation. It also seems to state a lot of "basics": like "The study guide should do more than merely present subject matter. It should contain directions and guidance for the students..." (page 79). This doesn't seem very insightful nor specific to distance education.

The challenges for higher education are referred to and the transformation needed to position themselves is evident in this book. The authors gave benchmarks for success throughout the book which is helpful in the planning and maintaining of vibrant distance education initiatives.References to support material and web based links make this book a definite must on every distance educator's desk.

This was an insanely expensive book. This was the best price I could find! Shipped fast. Container might have more sound, but otherwise I was thrilled to get it at.

I didn't realize it was so out of date. 1976 and very outdated. I was embarrassed to give it as a gift as with all of the new items on the market this was written in the dinosaur age. I paid for what I received.

Required text for my class. I appreciated the straight forward writing of Moore & Kearsley, made it an easier read for a text book.

This set is supposed to come with the items necessary to create two projects, a wall hanging and a mini plant hanger. I bought this specifically to learn macrame plant hanging.For the macrame plant hanger the author states, "Using a wall hook or swivel"... however the author provides no wall hook, metal-o-ring or swivel so I had to go purchase that item.Once I got the swivel, I started to proceed with the instructions and I get to the part that says, "take two stands of cord and thread them both through one bead". However, the holes in the beads are so small it is impossible, absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to get one strand through, let alone two strands and I have asked multiple people to try to get two strands through one bead and no one can.So now I'm going to have to purchase beads in order to get through this project. I am disappointed that it doesn't come with everything for the two projects as it states and how the beads are unusable.

Loved this cute kit! the packaging is adorable and perfect for a gift. the book is small but has multiple projects and big pictures. the directions are fairly easy to understand. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because i had to stop working on my macrame wall hanging because the holes in the beads are too small! I was looking for a project to do while visiting relatives during the holidays and I was disappointed I couldn't finish it because of the bead problem. One cord could fit in the hole but the directions require 2 cords to go through and it wasn't possible. I recommend if you give this as a gift, you also purchase additional beads with larger holes.

I like the easy to follow directions for beginners. Didn’t care for the macrame cord included but it was good for practicing with.

Looks to be easy and simple know tying.

James Bastien was born in Bellingham, Washington, on April 10, 1934. His father, Clarence, was musical and played the violin. His mother, Dorothy, was a writer and a high school Latin and journalism instructor. They performed as the duo-piano team, Smisor and Bastien. In addition, Jim was a Columbia Artist accompanist whose collaborative career included appearances with Richard Tucker and John Alexander. During this time Jim and Jane started writing music to address the needs of their students. This was the beginning of the Bastien piano books that have inspired so many piano students and teachers.The Bastien piano books have been published worldwide by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company since 1963 and are now translated into 14 languages. In 1999, The Music Teachers National Association presented Jim and Jane with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the association's highest honor, in recognition of their outstanding career in music and contribution to the music profession.James W. Unlike previous volume, maybe because this volume has 127 pages, it is a spiral binding version. This is ok with me. What bothered me was the music note printing inside this volume was not as comfortable as previous volumes for the eyes to read. At the beginning I thought this volume I received was a counterfeit. But the notes were very clear to read, just not that comfortable to read. I read other reviews, it seemed this volume was indeed spiral binding version. I wish the publisher could keep using the same quality paper to print.

My piano teacher recommended this book and I understand it has been around for awhile, reason being, this is a good one. Also of note, the print is large and legible. You do not always get that in a music book and I for one appreciate not having to strain my eyes trying to decipher small print. It has a nice variety in it and chances are you will find several pieces very much to your liking.

This is a wonderful collection of pieces if you are interested in the classics. Some of the pieces are a bit difficult for me, but I love them regardless and will keep picking away at them. I had played for about ten years, then stopped for five so I am a bit rusty. These are great pieces for improving hand strength and speed also if your looking for a showy piece.

I like the selections and the print is easy enough to read and the spiral bound allows the book to lay flat well. However I’m not thrilled by the editorial notes. Not as clear or helpful as it’s Faber counterpart.

This book is required by the piano teacher. Quality of printing is normal, unless some other reviewer's comment.

This is a good book for intermediate-advanced students.

It has the music I was looking for. It is a spiral bound book, which is easy to open and keep straight. The previous editions were not spiral bound, according to my piano teacher. Also, the print is large enough for easy reading.

Wonderful music in a clear format. Spiral binding helps the music lay open. Nice selection. The levels are accurate for the most part. Highly recommended.
