This book was a required book by my Nursing Leadership class so as any starving student would do I rented it. While going through the reading I found the information was bland, and it took quite some reading within the book to get the message and to the point. The case studies and boxes within each chapter were helpful. I knocked off one star due to the reading being a tad boring, but that can be expected for any textbook. The second star I had to take off was due to a large cut through the front cover of the book but then again it was rented. However for the price of the rental this student can't complain too much. Regardless, just be mindful if you are renting this book that there may be defects and some wear and tear.

One of the worst nursing books out there. This book is the definition of verbose. Probably every page could be condensed down into a few sentences. It is incredibly wordy and one of the most poorly written nursing books I've had so far in nursing school. Every sentence sounds like the author is just trying to show off rather than conveying the information in a clear and coherent manner.

We were required to use this book in my BSN leadership class. I was very disappointed in this selection. The material is so drab and hard to get through. There are no practice questions anywhere in the book.

The book served its purpose, however, it is pretty beat up. There are torn and bent pages, significant water damage, and bent covers. I definitely expected to get a half-way decent book for the price and didn't use it as much because I was afraid to damage it even more. Should have a better description of what to expect when the book arrives.

Nothing wrong with seller. The book itself it not worth it. I bought it because it is a requirement for class and regret it. I even sent the instructor an email regards this book. I wrote and essay every week for my class and found other book, older at that, to be more helpful. This book sure can make something easy hard to understand. Very repetitive. This book produces obvious nursing management issues and talks about theory rather than has to develop a solution. Horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible buy. I regret this book more than my first 3 marriages.

Great price for a school book I needed to rent arrived next day

This was required for a nursing course and it was a good deal to rent.

Received. A little wear and tear on some pages. Definitely used. But it is a rental and it will get used. One week out from the start of classes and already have assignments that call for reading chapters. Thank you.

Spiral Jetta: A Road Trip through the Land Art of the American West (Culture Trails: Adventures in Travel), by Erin Hogan

Review

“I was never quite sure what Hogan was looking for when she set out . . . or indeed whether she found it. But I loved the ride. In Spiral Jetta, an unashamedly honest, slyly uproarious, ever-probing book, art doesn’t magically have the power to change lives, but it can, perhaps no less powerfully, change ways of seeing.” (Tom Vanderbilt New York Times)“The title’s overly coy allusion to Robert Smithson’s masterpiece doesn’t detract from a smart and winning book. Hogan, the public-affairs director at the Art Institute of Chicago, does her best to arrange an unhappy marriage—a land-art tour ‘through the states of Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas’ and ‘through the states of anxiety, drunkenness, disorientation, and heat exhaustion’—but the reader emerges enlightened and even delighted. After all, making critical theory fun is quite a feat. Casually scrutinizing the artistic works Sun Tunnels, Double Negative, Roden Crater, and Lightning Field while gamely playing up her fish-out-of-water status, Hogan delivers an ingeniously engaging travelogue-cum-art history.” (Atlantic)“Across this marvelously unexpected little road saga, the stud muffin cowboys of late twentieth century American art at long last meet their sly gamine match.  Pretty much doing for Land Art what Geoff Dyer did for D. H. Lawrence, Ms. Hogan, an urban fish decidedly out of water, flopping about in the high desert parch, makes for marvelously endearing company.  An at times harrowingly (albeit comically) unreliable navigator (who doesn't bring a compass along on solo treks across such vast empty expanses?), Hogan nevertheless then manages to deploy an expertly modulated prose, tracking the heaviest of subjects with the lightest of touches, melding gravitas and whimsy (vodka and tonic), in a narrative that in the end, like the art it surveys, manages to be about what it is to be an individual alone—pinprick-contingent, achingly vulnerable, gobsmacked enthralled—in the face of all that is.” (Lawrence Weschler)"Hogan’s pilgrimage, sparsely illustrated, is part well-informed art historical travelogue and part light foray into self-discovery; her prose is lucid, energetic and expressive, and she is an affable guide." (Publishers Weekly)"Spiral Jetta is the perfect read for those who enjoy contemporary art but don't have an academic background in it, and it doubles as a fine Western road trip narrative. . . . A diverting, insightful look at the land art of the American West and the characters Hogan encountered along the way." (Jenny Shank New West)“Blending a humorous travelogue and serious musings, in Spiral Jetta she winds her car and the reader through the complexities of 1970s earthworks and contemporary aesthetics via a varied landscape of people, places, and art. . .  She is great at keeping the reader’s attention: two pages of art philosophy; ten pages of fun.” (Mary Parrish Science)"[An] engaging and sometimes hilarious account of a 'recovering art historian' facing an early midlife crisis. . . . Hogan eloquently discusses the sublime and the intimate . . . and she makes us feel as if we're right down in the trench with her." (Marc Vincent Plain Dealer)"Hogan is a fine guide, evolking the dry, mostly desolate, Western landscape, while skilfully shaping her sensory experience of the artworks and her reactions to them into a nicely flowing narrative." (Chicago Artist's News)"Hogan is funny and intellectually stimulating in her amazing summer art journey." (School Arts Magazine)

Although I thought that other reviewers were exaggerating about the author's snobbish attempts at viewing land art in rural settings, I very quickly tired of this author's journey. She is scared of her own shadow, and the majority of the book is filled with pages on her anxieties about various roads, hotels, etc. (For instance, she fretted that cows in the pasture might charge her car!) She was especially condescending about the rural people and communities she encountered on her journey. If you have ever driven anywhere by yourself outside of an urban area, you will most likely desire a more adventurous tale about exploring land art or the West. Additionally, the guide/itinerary on land art at the back of the book is minimal. You will not find any insider tips that you would not find in other travel books that include these major land art sites.

It was a decent read. There were just some moments where the trip went off-topic. I think there was a whole chapter where the road trip wasn't mentioned.

The author's account of her visit to earth works in the western US is often hilarious and is never dull.

This is a cross-over book: a mixture of a small amount of art history, with a bit of travel writing and with a nod towards Kerouac's On the Road. The latter is hard to avoid I guess given the genre--the road trip to various desert sites.I've always wanted to go to the art sites she visits or tries to visit. It's rather disappointing and unfortunate that the author doesn't find Nancy Holt's Sun Tunnels and she doesn't see Roden Crater, so two of the chapters are about these failures. At the back of the book are directions to most of the sites, perhaps assembling this information before the trip would have been a better idea. There's a rather laboured discussion threaded through the book about the author's efforts to be spontaneous that explain this peculiar lack of preparation. She does manage to visit Spiral Jetty, Lightening Field, Double Negative and the Chinati Foundation in Marfa and her accounts of these visits is engaging and enjoyable. On the whole, the book is a very easy read, but a bit less biography and more engagement with the sites would have suited my taste better.

Land art was a controversial movement that came out of the 1960's and 1970's. Artists like Robert Smithson, Nancy Holt and Walter DeMaria tore apart the concept of art being individual works displayed in a gallery or sculpture garden independent of surroundings and time. They went to the most remote corners of the American west and southwest and created huge installations that are wedded to the landscape with an expectation that time and elements, as well as the viewers' physical perspective, can change their work and statement.A generation later, an urbanite armed with a doctorate in art history, who was well read on the debate about land art realized that since its entire point is about where it is, she ought to go out and see these icons for herself. Erin Hogan may have been intellectually equipped, but going to land art is nothing like donning heels and a black dress and going to a gallery opening in Chicago. Thus her book is an amalgam of art history, art criticism and a frequently funny travelogue of an innocent who had never traveled solo before. The title of the book incorporates this range: the first earthwork she visits is Smithson's "Spiral Jetty" on Salt Lake, and the car she drives to remote, off-road locations requiring high-riding all-wheel drive vehicles is a VW Jetta. This book works on many accounts: Hogan is a natural storyteller and she is an accessible interpreter of art history and criticism. Due to very poor directions, not to mention a scary evening in a bar called the Saddle Sore, she does not find Holt's "Sun Tunnels" and later, a conversation with a Navajo ranger convinces her that it would be foolhardy in gun country to seek James Turrell's "Roden Crater." Although that's disappointing, she achieves some major experiences, especially a transformative overnight at De Maria's "Lightening Field." However inauspicious their start on the trip, she and the Jetta survive, and she provides revised travel directions for those who would like to make their own pilgrimages without the slapstick.

Many art historians have written about the great modern earthworks of the American West and Southwest, but this is the first travel book to do so. What sets this book apart from others of its kind is the quality of the writing and the personality of the author, Erin Hogan. Hogan, an avowed urbanista from Chicago, writes with real comedic flair about the road trip she took in her trusty VW Jetta to visit the legendary Spiral Jetty, Lightning Field, Double Negative, Rodencrater, and Donald Judd's Chinati Foundation in Marfa (almost all of them funded by the Dia Foundation). Writing in a picaresque mode, along the way she encounters some pretty hairy and scary characters straight out of the old Wild West, but gone wrong, terribly wron. While her discussions of the formidable works of Judd, Smithson et al are excellent and accessible for general readers, the account of her accidental discovery of a folk-art site known as Hole 'n' the Rock is absolutely transcendent, right up there on a par with Perelman, Benchley, Woody Allen. A fabulous read. I hope we'll be seeing more from this talented writer--and soon.

An absolutely incredible inside look at Cedar Point over the last 40 years. John has given Cedar Point fans a rare look at what it takes to run the world's greatest amusement park. So many great stories and anecdotes. If you're a Cedar Point fan, you will have a hard time putting this book down once you start reading.

A firsthand reflection on John's career at Cedar Point, from his early years as a marketing manager, to his final years as General Manager at Cedar Point. My favorite story is how the park services managers used to take such pride in the cleanliness of the restrooms that they organized pre-season sleepovers IN THE RESTROOMS! If only the restroom floors were still clean enough to sleep on.

This book will certainly appeal to CP enthusiasts, amusement park enthusiasts, and former employees of CP. I was a seasonal employee in 1985 working on the Frontier Lift for it's final season and consider that summer at CP the best summer and job ever! I was smiling the entire time I read this book. It brought back so many memories from my months there and I can't say that I found anything that didn't mirror my knowledge or experience while there. John tells all his stories with sincerity, integrity and honesty. This book is a true treasure!

Loved every page! Perfect for anyone who has ever visited the park!

Excellent view of the nuts and bolts that go into providing a daily show for Cedar Point's guests. His viewpoint and perspective of 40 years are certainly rare in today's business world. It's fast moving and a quick read. I especially liked his delving into his mentors over years and how they provided him with guidance and perspective over his jouney to the top.

You will feel as if you are doing just that. The neat part is that you are seeing the midway from a GM viewpoint. This GM was VERY well known and LOVED Cedar Point! You appreciate CP even more as you learn the interaction between John and ALL of CP. The writing is excellent, very personable, and informative.

This was an excellent read! As a former intern in the Park Operations team at Cedar Point, I connected with so many of the stories which brought back so many memories.

Nice book

From the Inside Flap

Gifted artist Gerald Murphy and his elegant wife, Sara, were icons of the most enchanting period of our time; handsome, talented, and wealthy expatriate Americans, they were at the very center of the literary scene in Paris in the 1920s. In Everybody Was So Young--one of the best reviewed books of 1995--Amanda Vaill brilliantly portrays both the times in which the Murphys lived and the fascinating friends who flocked around them. Whether summering with Picasso on the French Riviera or watching bullfights with Hemingway in Pamplona, Gerald and Sara inspired kindred creative spirits like Dorothy Parker, Cole Porter, and F. Scott Fitzgerald (Nicole and Dick Diver in Tender is the Night were modeled after the Murphys). Their story is both glittering and tragic, and in this sweeping and richly anecdotal portrait of a marriage and an era, Amanda Vaill "has brought them to life as never before" ("Chicago Tribune).

If you've read "Living Well Is the Best Revenge," by Calvin Tomkins, or F. Scott Fitzgerald's "Tender Is the Night," this biography of Gerald and Sara Murphy will give you a comprehensive view of the lives of Gerald and Sara Murphy, American expats who "invented" summer on the Riviera in the 1920s--with Picasso, Léger, Cole Porter, John Dos Passos, Hemingway, and, of course, Fitzgerald himself. There's Sara's exceedingly comfortable upbringing in East Hampton and her powerful allure to all who knew her, Gerald's worries about the "defect" in his character and his brief moment as an important modern painter, the tragedy of the loss of their two sons, the art world (painting, music, ballet) of postwar Europe, and lives lived consciously as works of art themselves. Wonderfully written, full of anecdote and character, highly recommended.

I decided to read this book upon completing Paula McClain's book, "The Paris Wife" which was a wonderfully written story of Hemingway's first wife, Hadley Richardson, and their life and times in Paris during the twenties. It was an era which brought together artists, writers, and poets, enveloped in decadence, luxury, and debauchery. Gerald and Sara Murphy were New York socialites who moved to Paris without artistic pursuit, but plenty of money to buy their way into the inner circles of the Americans in Paris who would shape our literary, artistic, and musical lives forever. I would have given this five stars, but the book slows down terribly during the second half. It's almost as though Vaill ran out of energy. There is lots of juicy gossip in this book which makes for incredibly, fascinating reading. If you're into that sort of stuff, then you may well give this book five stars. I found it immensely intimate and revealing with a good flow. There are times when it reads like a history book, but for the most part, it is a good story with lots of historical insights at the center of which are the Murphys, who befriended, supported, and held together, the Americans in Paris.

Didn't expect to like this book. Over privileged couples from the twenties have a very limited appeal for me. The writer moves the reader through the back story rather quickly with lots of interesting tidbits. It was easy to become involved. It does flesh out the group of people that lived in artistic bliss during that time period.

I'm so glad this was one of the books I decided to read after "THE PARIS WIFE." I knew there was a "Sara and Gerald Murphy, however, there really isn't anything written about them. I find this absolutely amazing, because they were the "POWER COUPLE " of their time. (The Lost Generation,) as Gertrude Stein so aptly put it. They were the influences with Hemingway, Picasso, the Fitzgeralds, people looked towards them as friends, confidents, and while their life was stuff that "dreams were made of, there was unimaginable tragedy" in their lives, yet they kept going on where others might have fallen. EXCELLENT BUT LONG READ, (with photos, well documented.)

I am always drawn to books about the beautiful people, especially during the Gilded Age in New York and the early 20th Century in Europe and the States. As a consequence, I have done a fair amount of reading about "the lost generation" of Paris is the 20's, the arbiters of taste and creativity of the ages and the iconic artists and personages of this mythical time in history. In my readings I have often encountered The Murphy's. They pop up in books about Fitzgerald and Hemmingway, Cole Porter, Dawn Powell and many other shining stars of that era.Because I had so often encountered the radiant couple, I began to seek out sources about them as people, not just as people on the periphery of the movers and shakers of the time. I chanced upon the Tompkins piece in the New Yorker, "Living Well Is the Best Revenge." It whetted my appetite for more about these charmed and enigmatic people. Around the same time, I saw De-Lovely, the fictionalized movie about Cole Porter and his wife Linda in which the Murphy's play a large, if not totally accurate, part. Then I found this book, Everybody Was So Young by Amanda Vaill, in my BookBub Kindle selections and my pulse started racing. Finally, a book length inquiry into the elusive couple I longed to know. My find has proven to be one of the most delicious of my book trolling career. This is no mere surface rehashing of the same old stories about Gerald and Sara Murphy we may have seen before. It is a rigorously researched account of both Gerald and Sara starting from their upbringing and parental influences, through their schooling and adolescences and college years, to the beginning of their improbable relationship and ultimate marriage. That is just the first third of this encompassing history.Vaill had uncommon access to the family's letters and recollections by virtue of having been born into the circle of society that included the Murphy's and some of their illustrious friends, and being a friend of their daughter, Honoria. The author even recalls having met Gerald and Sara late in their lives when she was very young, so her insights and understanding of the material she so painstakingly gathered is remarkable. The book goes into depths of intimate detail about not only the couple but also the many friends that made up their world, including Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Pablo Picasso, Archibald MacLeish, John Dos Pass is, Hemmingway, Dorothy Parker, Alexander Woolcott, Serge Diaghilev and the Ballets Russe, Fernand Lever, Cocteau, and countless other luminaries of the age and their many wives. Vaill has given us a comprehensive history not only of the golden couple but of the entire zeitgeist of the era.In addition, Vaill takes us up close and personal into the crushing destruction of the Murphy's perfect world. We are there through the financial vicissitudes of living in the monied stratosphere, the horrific loss of their two sons and their ability time and again to reinvent themselves in order to face the "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune." The equanimity and deep love they kept alive, despite the many obstacles they faced both internally and externally, serves as an inspiration to us all.For anyone interested in this fascinating time period, this is a book not to be missed. For those who are drawn to a family saga that includes self-doubt, sexual ambiguity, incalculable loss and inimitable grace under pressure, this is also a book for you. I cannot recommend this beautiful book more emphatically. I will treasure it.

On the face, the story is familiar. The Murphy’s are advantaged and come from wealthy families. They are Ivy League educated. The story is a who’s - who of the 1920’s. Cole Porter, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Vanderbilt, Crosby, and so many more that there would be no space. In some cases they are intimately close friend s and others are acquaintances. They summer in England and France and the description of the parties would raise the hair on one’s neck. The story of their life is exceptionally written and flows well. I was captured from the beginning and it’s hard to put this book down. This is a fantastic look at the iconic and a closer view of what life was really like in the 1920’s for the rich and famous.

Thanks for a quality book on the fondue experience. We got a fondue as a Christmas gift and waiting the 2 days for the book to try it out. Practical recipes with everyday ingredients.

I bought this as a gift for my granddaughter. She loves it! Excellent quality and easy to clean.

This book was a gift and my daughter is thoroughly enjoying the recipes. She has used the book for several occasions during the Holiday Season,

I love this book and I am going to enjoy making the recipes inside to spice up the holidays and for any other occasion.

I was looking for a fondue recipe book to go with my new fondue pot and this one looks like it's going to be a good one. The book is in brand new condition and the recipe look yummy. I was looking for the cheese fondue recipes but there are chocolate recipes in this book that I'd also like to try.I can't wait to try some of the recipes.

I bought this for my children for Christmas and now I am waiting to be invited over for Fondue Night!

Library book. No purchase. Good book w lots of different fondue recipes. Now that winter has come I can not wait to try some of them, although we tend to prefer the cheese fondues over the chocolate ones. Have a great 1970s era American made electric fondue pot w old forks to use, which makes the whole process even better.

The Hot Zone explains the Ebola Virus, it's history and the effects of the virus on the human and Simian body. It tells the story of a near outbreak in the U.S.This was a quick read for me over the summer and gave me a fairly decent education regarding this deadly, and scary virus and how it likely jumped species from monkey to human by (spoiler) monkey markets and the greedy mishandling of the animals in the research market. There have been areas in Africa where villages have been devastated by Ebola and it's three different strains. This book is creepy as it explains how the military handles the research of such virus's in it's Level Four research labs, where the handlers need no vaccinations when studying, because there are no vaccines. The researchers wear spacesuits and go through different levels before they can enter the area for researching such viruses as Ebola-a hole in your glove could mean certain death; you'd also be sent to a hospital where you'd have no chance to infect others - you'd die alone, a most grisly death too, as you'll read in the descriptions of people who died of Ebola.Of special interest is the story of the spread of Ebola in Africa before it became a known virus.Scary Non-fiction told in the author's usual riveting style.

Do I say "Research?" It is due to the fact that I am writing a fictional 'zombie' book for NaNoWriMo that I picked up the Kindle and Audible versions of this book. My zombies are merely sick people. I am not a medical person so I needed some input on how it all starts and how contagious it all is. As it turns out it isn't as bad as Ebola, but the gore of my book might evolve due to this book.Meanwhile, this is a book I put off for decades. I remember a guy named Jason at the school I worked at that came up to me with the paperback. He was so excited about it. But the more he talked the squirmier I got. "And it's a true story!" He exclaimed. I started watching shows like Outbreak. We saw it in the theater. Remember that sneeze? I nearly ran out of there when someone coughed.I grew--good or bad, I guess that's for others to judge. But lately, I can watch a disaster movie, or The Walking Dead and notice only the social reaction to the monsters or the disease or the overwhelming snow. So I thought I could now face this book.Reading happens at bedtime. Bet you can guess how this book blended into dreams. And since I listened as I read the Kindle with the Audible, that voice! Richard M. Davidson's voice. What a deep bass and excellent for the genre! Creepy and authoritative! Wow!What I learned is that my characters in my book were dressed properly to deal with their strains of disease. And I learned I never want to be anywhere near someone coughing! If I was a germaphobe before... well, let's just say there isn't enough hand sanitizer in the world for me!Knowing this is nonfiction made this even more frightening. It doesn't seem like it was that long ago there was an Ebola scare. What a horrid disease! And this author did a poetic job of helping the reader to see it and feel it. If you haven't read it yet, climb out of your hiding place and give it a try. Forewarned is forearmed as they say. Might as well get the Audible version to make it even more real. I will try to read more of his books now. Time for more vitamin C and Airborne!

I missed this book altogether when it first was published, but I did see it around the house. One of my sons read it, and told me the other day the book helped him decide on a career in medicine -- he's now in his sixth year of an M.D.-Ph.D. program . He told me this the other day when we were talking Ebola. So I decided to read it. Wow!Preston is a good storyteller, and he recounts the appearance of Ebola in suburban Washington as though this real-life event were a thriller, as, indeed, it turned out to be. I've read that Preston plans a new edition of the book, to correct what might be some overstatements in the course of an Ebola infection. I also wonder whether he will address the belief expressed in the Hot Zone that Ebola can be spread by airborne means. On the legal side, Preston has a good understanding of the law's inherent conservatism. When military brass was trying to decide how best to confine the outbreak of Ebola at a facility housing research monkeys, the officers conclude that it is best to act first, before seeking legal advice. Once they acted, the lawyers could always defend the emergency measures taken as legal. I chuckled when I read that, recognizing the inherent conservatism of a lawyer's advice.I enjoyed this book immensely. It gives insight into medical research, public health and military preparedness for a biohazard disaster. Surprisingly, it appears we don't know much more about Ebola than what we knew in 1995, when this book was published -- except that the virus still lives and is still capable of enormous destruction.

Four-Stars for R. Preston's focused story that weaves through the past decades since Ebola first emerged from the rainforrest. He carefully connects the main players as their paths cross again and again, their lives altered by this unseen, unclean thing, the filovirus (Ebola) sisters. One cannot help but to realize how at risk we humans are that a virus hidden deep in the jungles of Africa could hop-scotch around the world in a day, traveling incognito inside its naive host. Ebola is even now on the Tarmac at an African airport, waiting in silence, undetected. We skim the headlines on the internet and give it a mental shrug, Sudan, it's a long ways away but this is happening, right now!Oh, the FIFTH-STAR is for Amazon's WhisperSynch (audio enhanced Kindle books). Love it, makes reading and listening to audiobook into one; no time lost while driving, pick up reading back at home. Just open the iPad Kindle app and it knows automatically where it left off on the iPhone, driving in from Lubbock. Sorry, the Kindle reader still doesn't do it for me and neither does the PaperWhite connect with WhisperSynch. Hillbilly
