Weber quips that a journalist is a writer looking for a story and that is never more evident than here. I loved his book on baseball umpires. It had what this book lacks, a real sense of risk, of doing something completely out of the ordinary, of throwing oneself into a strange new world. This book is an account of Weber's second transcontinental crossing and along the way he compares his present journey to that of his past, as well as an extended bicycle trip across Vietnam two decades prior. (He also spends far too many pages recalling his childhood, analyzing his current romantic relationship, and generally telling us more about his personal life than I'd care to know.) On this trip he stays in hotels, eats in restaurants, and in his off hours blogs about his trip. He meets a handful of friends along the way who put him up and take him out. He even leaves the road for a funeral and later a wedding. It never feels like anything is at stake on this journey, that it's simply a book idea and a way to pass the time. More interesting challenges might have been to camp the entire route, or to have cycled across China or India or South America, or to have ridden for a time record (for his age), or to have traveled with no credit card or phone and depended entirely on the information and good will of those he met along the way. What we get instead is an account of a three-month lark on a bicycle. Weber is a great writer, but this is unfortunately not a great story.

You never quite know what to expect when you open up a book about touring the U.S. on a bike. Some spend most of their time describing the details of the ride, which we bikers enjoy. Others inject a good bit of humor. My favorite part of the book were Weber's descriptions of traveling through eastern Washington and Montana. Having lived near Missoula, MT, for a number of years, I enjoyed following his trip up the Going to the Sun Road and the sameness of eastern Montana. I confess to skimming certain portions--his descriptions of his relationship with Catherine; his mother's eulogy; crying the night before his heart surgery--but 90% of the book was a real pleasure. I enjoy his writing so much, and share his love of baseball, so I've ordered his "As They See 'Em." Looking forward to it.

Bruce Weber keeps the narrative spinning with his insights and events on his cross country bike ride. I was engrossed all the way -- and found especially interesting the comparison between this ride and his previous bike odyssey two decades before - the differences in the country and his own perspective. If this is a mid-life crisis, it is such a positive one -- as the author falls in love and has epiphanies along the way. Especially poignant is his farewell to a good friend whose death propels him to store the bike for a day to attend the funeral and give a moving eulogy. I found the rides through the barren and industrial sections just as engrossing as his tour of scenic wonders. I am in awe as the author catches up and overtakes the challenges of approaching 60. Recommended reading - and riding. His journey made me want to dust off my bike, brave all difficulties to face my own possibilities for adventure and reflection.

What a great read. I felt I was riding along with Weber, especially in the first half of the book. (Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana are so familiar to me that I knew every road and town on his route until he entered North Dakota). I applaud his motives, his effort and his writing. I loved his view of the terrain, the changing weather and the people he encountered, his passing thoughts on life, death, friendship and love. He has a journalist's eye, coupled with a memoirist's introspective point of view--at times self-deprecating (or at least very honest and modest), and always a bit humorous-engaging. This is a travel story, an interior meditation, a reminiscence, an adventure of a very personal sort that will take you along for the ride.

When the book arrived in the mail I had forgotten why I had ordered it. I am not a cyclist or even a sports enthusiast. Maybe it was because the author was an obituary writer. In any event, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and in particular his discussions about what motivated him at age 57 to take another cross-country bike trip. I am terribly curious about why anybody takes on such challenges, and especially where, as in the case of Mr. Weber, the actor has nothing to prove -- he had already done it once in addition to numerous other long-distance rides. Well written and easy to read. It has made me think about my own life's narrative as well as inspiring me to consider tackling some of my own challenges I have tended to deny.

Bruce is a good story teller and gives a great description of the real America hidden behind the headlines in "fly over country". as a fellow bicyclist of advancing years I feel both his pain and adulation as he crests forbidding hills and avoids the pot holes and fumes of today's motorized society.As a city dweller he knows how to ask the questions we all have of the folk who till the soil and harvest our food. He readily accepts the advice and hospitality from strangers (not that common among urban folk).I shall be sorry when he reaches his final stop and trades his bike and spandex for a suit and tie.

I really, really enjoyed this book and I always looked forward to reading the next chapter. Weber is a terrific writer, and brings a lot of American characters he met to life (the forlorn McDonald's manager who gave him a free apple pie when he learned Weber was cycling across the country). He also does a great job of describing the country he sees (two weeks to bike across Montana!). He also contrasts his political positions and life experiences with people he meets along the way. A really fine book.

I picked up this book and was not sure what to think having read nothing about it in advance. It's a great book. I like the author's writing style. He gives lots of background; and is not afraid to be honest about himself and his feelings. He wasn't trying to break a record or prove anything. It was just a goal and he did it; his way and I think he had a lot of fun doing it. Mahalo for taking the time to write about your experience is what I would say to Mr. Weber if I ever meet him.

I'm a consumate researcher. Throughout my son's school years, nursery school to college, I've been on a quest for the best solutions and custom fit for them. They have attended a combination of local public, magnate and private schools. I tend to research schools thoroughly, initially throwing out a big net and gradually refining my search. In my present quest for a private day or Boarding School for my 8th grader, this book has become my bible. It is not the complete record it could be. It is the only book in this category that I have found. I would included more categories in the cross-reference section. I would also include a list of schools by state. There are schools I was interested in that were not included here. All in all, it has been my main source, followed by other parents recommendations, internet research and school fairs. I would not want to be on this search without this book in hand.

This is a sloppy, superficial and overpriced guide. My number one target school, Kinkaid, wasn't even included in the guide, despite being one of the better schools in the country. Several other well known target schools of mine were omitted. The information presented for the schools they did include is very superficial and can be found readily on most school's websites. Finally, the schools are listed alphabetically instead of geographically!

A parent asked me to look at this book last week because she found it ovewhelming. I could easily see why. It is a very, very large book with a rather small typeface. This is perfectly understandable given the size and the fact that this is supposed to be a general reference book, like a "phone directory." The few entries I read were also very bland recitations that gave me little sense of the particular "school" and what was "special" about it, although each entry did have generous contact information. It did seem that the book could have been a little better indexed and made a little more "user friendly," as many college guides are. Still, a book like this "is what it is." It takes personal follow-up with any school to see if it is a good fit for your child and your wallet. And in the often confusing world of private high school admissions, this book is a good place to start.What floored me was price. Sixty-five dollars for the hardcover? That is a ridiculous sum of money for what you get. Buy used! Better, buy paperback used!

The bottom line is: some strategies and approaches look beautiful on paper but fail to work in the real-life classroom.Rob's approach is positive and empowering, yet authoritative and sensible and, most importantly, it’s an approach that works! The stories he tells pull you in: not only to understand his thought process, but to create effective analogies so that the reader can completely understand his points.While I read this book, I wanted to shout from the rooftop, ‘Yes, yes, yes!’ If every classroom teacher used these strategies and techniques in their classroom, they would definitely be able to take control of a noisy class.

This book is great for teachers who are new to the field or educators who are having trouble being consistent with their classroom management or those who find it hard to handle difficult kids in a calm manner. I know I use a lot of these strategies already and other teachers usually come to me for help in classroom management. It's nice now to have a book that discusses the strategies I use and I can recommend this book to others who would like specific examples or don't have time to visit me in the classroom. I was hoping for some advanced strategies for those kids who cycle through every few years where none of your usual tricks work. And I confess, with a family and second job, I don't have the time to visit my students for their soccer games or plays, which was one of the suggestions. I know students would love to see their teachers supporting them, but it's not feasible for many teachers with families or long commutes to be able to do so and it would be nice to be offered other alternatives to do on campus.

This book is something I've been searching for a long time. I'm grateful I found it ... It is PRACTICAL and IT really WORKS. I'm applying Mr. Plevin's ideas and principles in my daily class and it works like magic. Thank you so much Mr. Plevin and please keep up the great work. I admire your ethical, respectful and kind approach to get the best out of literally each and every student (and the whole class) and to help them grow not only academically but also on a personal level.

This book is really great. It explains behavior once the students enters the building, and then your class room. I started using elements of this book since September, and I have seen a difference in my students. As explained by the author, Rob, I post class procedures in the room (not just rules), therefore my students always know exactly what is expected of them and how it is expected. When they try to test me, all I do is point to the procedure posted on the wall. It works. Rob is an absolute genius.....this is my 16th year teaching, and I work in Jamaica, Queens, NY. This is an extremely challenging school district, but with the help of Rob, I am able to endure each day, and to keep my extremely high, blood pressure down.

I have to say that I’m totally in love with this book! Anyone who knows me knows that I believe before we can even begin teaching, we need to take control of our classroom. This book explains everything that I believe in. And it is an easy book to read with some humor thrown in too.The author breaks everything into 2 sections: establishing control and then step by step strategies to use in the classroom. Examples are given so you can “see” it in practice. The strategies are broken down and explained clearly. It is possible to try a strategy and get it in place and then trying another strategy. The classroom is always evolving and with different students’ personalities so not one particular strategy may be the perfect one for everyone’s classroom. It is like trying to develop a recipe that works best for you.I believe this book needs to be on every teacher’s bookshelf, every administrator’s bookshelf, and one in the school resource library for those teacher’s who don’t own a copy! The thing about his content that I find motivating is that when you put it altogether, he's not talking about teacher hacks and quick fixes. Instead he talks about how to become a better teacher, modeling better practices, and how that builds culture. When you have a positive and healthy culture (i.e. good classroom management), you can teach anything and your students will eat it up.

I'm 7 years into teaching middle school and I have been finding it harder and harder to get and keep my students' attention. I stumbled across Mr. Plevin's work on YouTube and was immediately impressed by his clearly defined, step by step instructions for resetting a noisy class and getting them back on the right track. In his book he shares his experiences with difficult classes with his own tried and true methods, putting them into easily implemented techniques. From ideas for building relationships, to ways to add humor and keep students engaged by injecting short, interesting activities into your lessons, his ideas will help you regain and maintain your sanity!

At first, many of the ideas seem to be the same old suggestions, but they seem to work better for me. When I looked at them more closely, I realized that even the ones I already knew about had some new to me adjustments made. I am so glad I found this book as it really does help the teacher with that class that just won't mind.

Fans of the source material will enjoy getting to meet familiar characters as young upstarts, especially Rachel Lynde and John Blythe. Echoes of the "Anne" books include references to old rivalries and friendships, but newcomers won't feel lost. The setting comes alive with every delicious meal, death-defying sickness, and richly described landscapes that would do Montgomery proud. There are some missteps as the author tries to present the Cuthberts as accepting of non-white people, but the enlightenment of the title character at the cost of fully realized secondary characters of color mars that aim. However, the interracial relationship featured in later chapters does feel authentic the plot development. Like most little girls I read the Little House on the Prairie series written by Laura Ingalls Wilder and the Anne of Green Gables series by Lucy Maud Montgomery. I would guess I ready the Anne of Green Gables series every year when I was growing up. Sadly, it has been a few years since I have picked up Anne of Green Gables, I purchased the kindle versions of the books in anticipation of reading Sarah McCoy's, Marilla of Green Gables. McCoy's publishers have done an amazing job of marketing her newest book. I first saw advertisements over a year ago and pre-ordered the book the first chance I got.Marilla of Green Gables is McCoy's attempt at explaining why the character Marilla was the way Marilla was. Marilla, a person mysteriously hardened by life comes alive with the arrival of a young girl with a vast imagination managed to pull her out of her shell. Readers of the Montgomery's Anne series know that Marilla alludes to a love lost and regrets in conversations with Anne about Gilbert Blythe. Keeping in mind that this version of the story is not Lucy Maud Montgomery's telling, Sarah McCoy does Marilla's story justice. Early in the book I remembered that at some point in life Marilla loved, was loved, and lost love. Watching the relationship between John Blythe and Marilla develop it was hard not to feel a tightening in my chest with the knowledge that their love would end tragically. It was an interesting perspective, the loss of Marilla's mother, promises made on a death bed, and a loyalty to family, all of which made Marilla the woman she was when we first meet her in Anne of Green Gables.McCoy claims to have done extensive research on Montgomery, the Anne series, and Prince Edward Island in an effort to bring new life to old characters. I believe that Montgomery would feel honored by the story that was told.I am not ready yet to leave PEI and look forward to continuing my journey with Anne's arrival to Green Gables and a re-read of an old friend.Cover Design - 5.0The cover does a really great job of capturing Montgomery's Green Gables.Grammer - 5.0Beautifully edited. I am not familiar with Sarah McCoy as an author but this first introduction into her work brought me great pleasure.Plot - 4.0I did a Heather "no-no" and read some early reviews; prior to the book being released. People don't like change or things that are different. There were a lot of critics out there who feared that McCoy was treading on Montgomery's "turf". Now, I am all about originality and I feel that Hollywood continues to recycle old stories. I also believe that some mystery in a book's storyline allows the reader to use their own imagination. When reading the Anne of Green Gables series my heart always broke for Marilla and her love lost but I never really considered what could have caused her such heartache. Do I buy McCoy's versions of events? It's as much as a possibility as any and in this day in age when politics are causing so much division in our country it makes it a completely reasonable rationale that Marilla and John Blythe allowed heated beliefs to divide them. Marilla always was hard headed, Anne tames that, but she always spoke first and came to her senses later. It makes sense that speaking without thinking first plus her pride was Marilla's demise in love.Believability - NAI am not sure that this category applies to this book so I am going to leave it as NA.Ending - 5.0This book opens at the beginning of the Anne stories, before Anne arrives, and then with Marilla reminiscing about the past. Closure comes with the continuation of the series and Montgomery's telling of Anne's story.Price Value - 4.0I think the story was well written and well worth the price. I am all about the deal so doubt if you put this book on your wish list, in a couple of years the book with go on sale.Overall - 4.5I enjoyed this story. I don't usually get emotional over a book but for most of this story I had to try hard not to cry. Knowing the outcomes of the characters made it hard to root for the love story developing between Marilla and John. I think the additional story of the American Civil War and the Underground Railroad brings a depth to Marilla's character. Marilla could have easily sent Anne back to the orphanage. Anne certainly wasn't what they needed or what they wanted but if you believe that Marilla held a soft place in her heart for the rights of all people you can understand why she would not send a child back to such suffering.

McCoy is very creative when introducing young Marilla Cuthbert, before she became crusty Marilla of Green Gables. The author does an admirable job of introducing Marilla's parents and young Matthew. My favorite character was blustery Rachel, since McCoy kept her personality as LMM designed her. Parts of the story are hard to read: the passing of her mother, Matthew's heartbreak, and the John Blythe angle. The last part was rather clunky. It just didn't seem to fit with the flow from the rest of the narrative. The cover art is very inviting. Overall, fans of Anne will embrace young Marilla's story. Thanks to the publisher for sending a hard copy and digital format of the book.

Overall, it did a good job of paying homage to the original series, while providing an interesting backstory to answer the questions I've always had about Marilla's youth. I enjoyed the little treats of continuity with "Anne of Green Gables", like seeing Marilla learn to make her famous wine, or the description of what would later become Anne's room, complete with explanations for the different items within.There are places where the characterization and plot feel forced, but I think this is partly due to the constraints placed on the author by the prequel format. We already know how Marilla's life turns out, and we know she has regrets about lost opportunities. This guarantees a certain unavoidable sadness to the story, but the author balanced that with warm and heartfelt depictions of the Cuthbert family, Avonlea, and the beauty of Prince Edward Island.

Anne of Green Gables has always been my favorite set of books. A orphan no one wanted but stole the hearts of Matthew and Marilla. Marilla always seemed distant and cold until Anne cracked her shell but what happened why were her and Matthew never married?This book shined a new light on Marilla and Matthew it was just magical. The story was well written and just made it feel like a prequel that L.M. Montgomery wrote herself. As much as I wanted the ending to be different and see her marry John Blyth it could not be.I loved this story so much and it had its moments that were heart warming and a few tears as well. Don’t forget Racheal she was a great addition to the story she reminded me of Anne.This book is a must read for all the Anne fans out there!

This story, “Marilla of Green Gables”, is like stepping right back into the wonderfully engaging series... “Anne of Green Gables”.It’s a beautifully told story thru the eyes and heart of the character we came to know as ‘Marilla’. You will come to know and love her even more deeply as you learn how she and Mathew came to be the exceptional persons they were who welcomed and nurtured the orphan Anne (with an e) into a delightful memory for us all!!!Marilla is a positively inspiring character modeling positively exceptional values for us all. Truly wholesome and good thru and thru!

I wanted to know as I suspect many readers of Anne of Green Gables want to know, what keep Marilla and John apart. The flow from LMM to SM as the author was easy, getting a vision of Anne Shirley out of my head as I read about a young Marilla was much harder. The transition from the adult Marilla to 40 yo Marilla was so quick I thought I’d skipped more then a few pages. A good book that I am happy was written. Anne and Gil are the consultation to there not being Marilla and John.
