Frank D. Aquila presents a timely book on the subject of School Law. The book is arranged, like most other school law texts, thematically, presenting cases in four parts: Policy Issues, Students' Rights, Teachers' Rights, and Legal Aspects of Schools. Issues are subdivided into individual chapters. For example: Policy Issues includes chapters on Desegration, Church-State Interaction and No Child Left Behind. Each chapter includes thorough discussions of the most notable "landmark cases" with which we should all be familiar. Additionally, examples of lesser known cases, and even hypothetical cases with discussion questions, facilitate discussions of basic principles in each chapter. This is a newer text (copyright 2008), including currently relevant topics such as Contract Liability, Tort Liability, Financing and Use of Public Funds, Violence in Schools, and Internet Issues. In addition, there are useful introductions to the legal system and to legal research, online website access to those cases Mr. Aquila has cited, even a map showing U.S. Federal Court Districts. Appendices include Selected Portions of the U.S. Constitution(those relevant to education, of course) and a Table of Authorities linking specific cases to their locations within the text. The glossary includes clear explanations of relevant legal terms. In short, all the things I remember having to go to other sites to research when I took School Law.I found the book to be well-organized, comprehensive, easy to navigate, and easy to understand. I would recommend this to any teacher or student of School Law.

Very informative book that I plan to keep and still own today as reference! Education is always changing but these laws and cases always come in handy for anyone in the administration field!

I am really disappointed in Amazon.com Kindle Store (Kindle for Mac) I am having so much trouble reading the charts and the Important Concepts. I can not accurately give a review of this book yet because it is so difficult to read that I am actually thinking of going out and buying the book and going to try to get my money back. Yes I know.... Good luck. I will attempt to read it unfortunately it is for a class I am taking, but I am seriously disappointed with Amazon.com. My suggestion is don't buy this from the Kindle Store if you have to buy it.

Well organized. Simple to read. Comprehensive.

I found the book to be very helpful throughout the course I was taking. Provided relevant law cases to support the topics we learned.

Great.

An Introduction to Ray Tracing (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Computer Graphics)

Review

"Glassner's excellent book is indispensable for anyone wishing to understand and implement the up-to-date methods of ray tracing (and in the process, learn about surface physics too)...It is well edited and avoids any of the repetitions or contradictions that might have arisen in a multi-author text. Covering both theory and practicalities it includes sufficient detail (and code) to allow competent programmers to set up their own ray tracing systems...To me it seems to be an exemplary text and I highly recommend it." --John Lansdown, THE COMPUTER BULLETIN "Excellent reference for ray tracing for both the beginner and the experienced ray tracer. It is the only book we know of completely dedicated to ray tracing." --IMAGING & VISION COMPUTING

To be perfectly honest I have only read the first chapter and part of the 4th on surface physics. What I have read so far has really improved my understanding. The book also has a glossary and bibliography at the back so it will be a useful reference tool. I don't think I will ever write my own renderer but nevertheless it really helps you understand concepts such as specular reflection and diffuse reflection and the difference between the two. The ways that render algorithm refer to rays, the basic flowchart of a render algorithm, what is stochastic sampling etc.I may read over the course of a year as I understand and use the concepts more and it will certainly be a valuable reference. There is quite a bit of vector and matrix geometry in the book. But people without a lot of math background could probably still get a lot from it. This print is approximately 25 years old and so it is a technical book but probably not as technical as some moderns texts. Being second hand it is a very cheap start to serious study for a beginning amateur.

I have interest in computer graphics with no prior knowledge of ray tracing. Absolutely fantastic book. Great Introduction to the subject.

This book is a classic - by which I mean that the coverage of the basics is so thorough and clear that even if new techniques are developed (and certainly they will be) this will be a great introductory text even when it's many year out of print.

It is my textbook in this term. I went to bookstore and find the used one is priced over $100. This one is only $25. And when I unwraped the case, I was surprised by its condition. It looks like a new book.

For those just getting into ray tracing, this book is a great introduction to the semantics of raytracing. Not your usual book focusing just on the math, but also shows you how to begin implementing a ray tracer.

While some books treat ray tracing like a method for geniuses, this one try to demystify it. The highlights, in general, go into "why" and "how" to do. Maybe the best parts are the "dictionary" of "ray-intersection" formulas and mainly the practical outline of a real ray tracer. This book don't teach you to do a ray tracer for Hollywood, but it's a very good beginning.

It's been a while since I've cracked this book, but it provides an excellent introduction to raytracing. This coupled with "Realistic Image Synthesis Using Photon Mapping" and a good bit of patience, and you can produce truly amazing renderings. If you're at all interested in understanding or implementing raytracers, check this book out.

I'll admit I know nothing about ray tracing and I bought this book in an attempt to learn. However, this book deals with the mathematical concepts of raytracing from an intellectual analysis standpoint. If all you want to do is "make pretty pictures" this book is not for you. If you want to write your own raytracing engine, buy it today.

Review

"You remember Eat, Love, Pray and Under the Tuscan Sun? Yeah, this really isn’t like those. It’s better.” ―San Francisco Chronicle“...funny, witty, and fascinating....if you have a weird fascination for North Korea and need a little laughter and raw utter truth as to what it is like vacationing there then I urge you to go read this book.” ―San Francisco Book Review“…an irresistible read…. Simmons presents a rare and fascinating look at the tourist's North Korea in a work that is humorous, appalling, and very sad. A highly recommended and revealing glimpse into a secretive land.” ―Library Journal“A death-defying adventure, filled with despair and tiny pieces of hope, and beautiful ― I wish I was as brave as Wendy.” (James Altucher Bestselling author, entrepreneur, podcaster) “Wendy Simmons traveled to a place few of us will ever go and found herself in the ultimate Potemkin Village. Her intrepid desire to discover the reality behind the stagecraft escorts the reader through My Holiday in North Korea with words and pictures that render this mysterious country both knowable and unknowable, and always fascinating. Simmons’ insightful and funny storytelling evocatively captures the deception, corruption, humor and, ultimately, anguished humanity of a bizarre nation. It’s a wild trip.” (Jon Reiner James Beard Award-winning author of The Man Who Couldn’t Eat) “My Holiday In North Korea by the very funny Wendy Simmons is a must-read for anyone who wants to lift the veil and spy on the real North Korea. But more than that, it is Ms. Simmons ease at being a traveler to distant and strange lands that gives this book its unusual insight into what people behind a real iron curtain think, and yes, feel.” (Maria T. Lemmon Novelist, a screenwriter, and the author of Confessions of a So-Called Middle Child, and Making It Up as I go Along) “Wendy Simmons gives a glimpse into NoKo in this humorous and entertaining book. Through her eyes we see the sometimes absurd, yet always aching existence of a country under the thumb of oppressive rule.” (Myles Kennedy Singer/Songwriter Alter Bridge/Slash & The Conspirators) “Writer and photographer Wendy Simmons shares a personal account of her vacation to one of the most reclusive nations on the planet, North Korea. During her journey she finds herself caught between an international crisis sparked by the release of the Sony Pictures film The Interview and accidentally crashing the ‘wedding’ of a North Korean bride to be.” (Gabriel Sanchez Buzzfeed)

A born explorer, she is thrilled when granted a rare entry visa―despite the country’s penchant for detaining tourists. In My Holiday in North Korea: The Funniest/Worst Place on Earth, Wendy offers readers a glimpse of North Korea as it’s never been seen before. Because even though it’s one of the scariest places on Earth, she somehow forgets to check her sense of humor at the border. Even worse, she’s never met a rule she didn’t want to break!Oh my Dear Leader. But Wendy’s initial amusement and bewilderment soon turn into frustration and growing paranoia. For ten days, she hurtles through a “North Korea is Great! America is Not!” tour. She’s attached by a virtual shock-collar to two female handlers, who monitor her every step―and guard their every word. And Wendy’s pretty convinced one of them is crazy, even by North Korean standards. Before long, she learns the essential conundrum of “tourism” in North Korea.“Travel is truly a love affair. But, just like love, it’s a two-way street. And North Korea deprives you of all this. They want you to fall in love with the singular vision of the country they’re willing to show you and nothing more.”Ultimately she’s left with more questions than answers―the most urgent being whether she can find a bathroom with running water, electricity, AND toilet paper!Through poignant and laugh-out-loud essays, Wendy chronicles one of the strangest vacations ever. Along the way she bares all while trying to befriend her enigmatic minders, and undergoes an inner journey as convoluted as the country itself.

This book is funny for sure. But I'm a bit worried about her two "minders" and if they will suffer any repercussions as a result of this book. Although she didn't identify them by name I'm sure the NKs can figure out who these women were easily enough. Really don't know why anyone would risk their freedom going to North Korea but I guess if you get a book out of it - okay. Aside from being entertained by Wendy's humorous writing style, I didn't really learn anything new about North Korea. There's a fine line between laughing at someone and laughing with someone and it seemed to me Wendy wasn't too sure where that line was. Sure, it's a light and funny quick read. But since it's written on the backs of 24 million captive brain-washed humans - er, not so sure if I should be laughing or crying.

Trips to North Korea are very unusual. Even the famous Vice magazine was unable to get there through normal diplomatic channels (ended up bribing the Chinese). The story author, rather than give a look into a closed society, makes pointless quip after quip. For example:"I remember thinking it was more time than a typical American vacation but less than the twelve to fifteen weeks before puppies are fully vaccinated and finally allowed to go to the dog park to play."If you want a travelogue with nonsense like the above, filled with snark and sarcasm where its impossible to tell what actually happened, and think the above statement is clever, buy this book. Otherwise, avoid is, because the writer is more concerned with interjecting her nonsense than actually telling story.

Having lived in Asia more than a decade, and being married to a Korean, I was hoping for something funny, but a lot more respectful. The author is absolutely disrespectful to her handlers, mocking North Korea, it's culture, and the fact that the North Korean people have no ability to do anything about it. At the end of the book, the author talks about how she is so much more empathetic than most people, and so much more able to intuit what's going on in situations, but throughout the book she displayed her inability to understand Korean culture and was utterly disrespectful and unemphatic towards the flight of her driver and the handlers. Asians will quickly overlook a small offense. And the author wonders why the driver won't forgive her. The slap she gives the driver at the end, was obviously the straw that broke the camel's back. I would not have had as much patience for the author, as did this poor driver.Despite the fact that she has supposedly traveled to so many countries, she obviously doesn't understand Asian societies. Never would anyone ask disrespectful questions or questions which might shame the people out their culture, yet this is what she does repeatedly throughout her 10 day trip. So much so, that her driver refused to even acknowledge her when she left. She talks about the"playful" banter they shared, but this"playful banter"doesn't exist in most Asian societies. Instead, she continuously caused her driver to lose face in front of his co-workers. No wonder he wouldn't even acknowledge her when she left. She also says how he refused to hug her--- a simple thing she would have understood, most Asians don't hug, especially Koreans and especially not with friends, let alone acquaintances!!!Despite painting herself as a fine Jewish woman, practically every page had the F word, or something along those lines. The book should be marked as having explicit language. She says she intuitively "gets" what's happening, faster than her friends, but it's obvious, to someone understanding Asian culture, that she had no idea what was going on, most of her trip. Throughout the book you see her drawing quick inferences about what's happening, and then proceeds too judge these poor repressed people ruthlessly. She was obviously dealing with culture stress, and taking it out on her handlers and the driver. Her handlers we're giving her clues as to what they "had to tell her," yet she continues to mock then incessantly. She points out to them everything that's wrong about their country. Then she wonders why they are rude with her. In other cases she talks about interactions with sales people, or other situations and she's equally blind to the cultural aspect.I was absolutely furious with this woman, who gave Americans a terribly bad name, towards the end of the book.

Wendy Simmons has traveled the world but has never made it to the closed country of North Korea, until now. Being a foreigner in North Korea is strange enough, but being an "American Imperialist" is a whole different story. As she tours the country with an array of "handlers" that both guide her around the sights and translate for her, she is subjected to the same anti-American propaganda that the North Koreans themselves are subjected to, lied to at every turn, and paraded around from empty amusement park to empty soccer stadium to empty food factory to empty hospital with little to no electricity, no running water, and no idea what's going on. Packed with loads of pictures from the suppressed country, humor, and insight, My Holiday in North Korea offers a rare glimpse into a country that few tourists will ever experience. Most complaints from other reviewers focus on Wendy Simmons' attitude during her travels, and I have to admit, it was pretty glaring to me, too, as I was reading: Wendy is kind of a bitch. Then again, as another "American Imperialist," I have to say that I get it. I mean, this is a country that brainwashes their citizens from birth to hate everything about us. They're incessantly lied to, suppressed, and left to starve while their failed political system is touted as "the greatest country on earth." Wendy steps into this country and while her guides are telling her how awful the Americans are and force-feeding her the same false propaganda they've heard all their lives, she's standing there questioning, "Why aren't there patients at this hospital? Why do you confiscate all the twins and triplets born in this country and hide them away in state-run orphanages? Why are the schoolchildren so miserable? Why isn't there running water? Where are the books in this library? Where are the stores? How do people buy groceries? " While most have criticized her attitude towards the North Koreans as being insensitive and rude, and I agree, I have to say that given the favorable way she describes the rest of her world travels and the unique situation of North Korea being pretty damn crazy, her unfavorable attitude towards the North Koreans is probably a one-off thing. I tried to not get bogged down by it and actually found a lot of her commentary funny, given the ludicrosity of her circumstances. Even in my own experiences, where I was taking classes in the Middle East and the professor told me that a woman is worth 1/4 of a man, I couldn't help my American attitude escaping and shutting that argument down.Lately I've been super interested in North Korea and have read a lot of fascinating books about the harrowing escapes of some of their citizens, but this book brought a new look at the country from a tourist's perspective, and I found myself highly entertained. There were many, many pictures included in the book, too, that I found absolutely fascinating. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a funny travel memoir (maybe along the lines of Chelsea Handler's Uganda Be Kidding Me) and isn't easily offended.

The book One You Cannot Have by Preeti Shenoy is neither interesting nor informative. It is perhaps an improvised version of her blog! She just has her undeveloped, unrealistic and out-of-place characters drifting throughout the book. The story does not have flow. There does not seem to be any logic about why her characters behave the way they do except because the author wants them to do it! The clothes they wear, places they go, the way they think is totally out of place for Indian setting - whether elite or middle class. I think she herself wasn't sure where she wanted to place them. They wear designer clothes, think like elite and travel in an autorikshaw!Although her Shruti has done nothing spectacular, she is remembered by the chief guest who later helps her. Her behavior in every situation is so strange that one really wonders what makes her tick! Deepika, her husband and their daughters - why do they do what they do?The only good thing about the book is that it is short.

I enjoyed reading this book because it lets you get into the thoughts of the main characters and therefore understand their attitudes towards certain situations. I also like reading books of different cultures. So far the stories that I've read that are based in India and other countries I have found to be very interesting. This book was very easy to read. I would certainly recommend it.

Finished it! In four hours! It's a short book, and a good read. My rating 3/5. And here's the review of Preeti Shenoy's book 'The one you cannot have' :The main theme of the book is 'Everyone will always have the one you cannot have.' The author conveyed her point well. The book talks about acceptance of your past and moving on. The plot is a no-brainer. Anyone can guess it from the title. Aman, a north indian, and Shruthi, a south indian, are star-crossed lovers. After four years of togetherness, they believe that nothing is going to stop them from getting married. However, fate interferes in a cruel way and Shruti is married to a another guy, Rishabh, from her own community. Even after two years, Aman and Shruti struggle with the ghosts of their pasts. It affects Shruti's marital life and Aman finds it difficult to commit himself into another relationship. How they found acceptance of their past and moved on is the rest of the story. The story moves at a brisk pace. The shifting of perspectives at the beginning of each chapter, a technique every author is employing these days, helped me understand them well. The characters of Shruti and Aman are excellently developed. Their love truly appeared magical. Until the last page, I hoped they would get together again, and once again the magic would happen. I particularly like Shruti's narration. I would often find myself skipping Anjali's part. It's not that her part was boring, but Shruti's was interesting.Moving on, there are loose ends in the story. Like the story of Vikram and Dipika. What happened to them? And why did the author introduce the subplot in the story when she didn't want to give it a proper closure? Is Dipika's character introduced to show us how bitter marriages can become and how it would drive the women to extremes? The other complaint I have is that the author drilled into reader's mind that marriages become boring after some years. She should have shown atleast one happy couple. It's a pretty depressing thought.I felt that the ending was abrupt. How did Shruti and Rishabh reconcile? I know she wrote an epilogue, but I felt it was insufficient since we invested so much time on them. The major complaint I have is why are mothers always shown as pestering? About baby, marriage or otherwise? The author tried to show it as affection, but frankly it was repetitive.Well, those are some of my thoughts. If you want to read a good story of acceptance and moving on, without worrying about the fate of other characters, then this is the book. I would have given it 4 stars if the story was a bit more well developed without loose ends.Divya,http://divyalavanya.blogspot.in

I have read most of Preeti Shenoy's novels and this one is probably one of the worst. Reading her novels, one gets the impression that relationship between man and woman is all about sex, and there is high probability of having sex every time every other man or woman meets. Plot in all her novels are the same - two characters in love, then break-up, then add few more characters, there will be love and sex between characters in all permutations and combinations, and finally a happy ending. I have given one star rating since a lot of time is spent in writing this, and a lot of time spent on reading this as well.

It is a typical Preeti Shenoy story with a little twist in the end. However it appears pretty straightforward with nothing very outstanding like in some of her other novels.

“For words once uttered find their way into hearts and later spill over to paper in the form of poetry. Immortalized forever. Perhaps this is what they call love.”I have to say that this book is an unconventional pick for me. I normally don’t read a lot in this genre, outside of the occasional Chetan Bhagat book, which is also rare these days. But I was out of books, and a trip to the bookstore or library meant battling snow, so I settled in with this one. I was looking for a light, quick read over the weekend, and this book fit the bill. This is the very first Preeti Shenoy book that I have read, so, went in with no expectations. This story reminds me of the following quote: “There are things that we don’t want to happen but have to accept, things we don’t want to know but have to learn and people we can’t live without but have to let go.”The book is a total page-turner. I liked the shifting of perspectives at the beginning of every chapter, and the characters, the life situations, and their decisions are very real and relatable. In-spite of the alternating narration, the author does not deviate from the plot. A large part of my enjoyment came from not being able to tell for sure how it would all end (yes, in-spite of the title).Read the full review @ http://shanayatales.com/the-one-you-cannot-have-by-preeti-shenoy-book-review/

Almost $35 for a book smaller than a novel. No wonder education is so expensive. Those who make so called educational books overcharge students. Greed!

Bought this book for a class I'm taking - excellent content, easy to read and follow.

I get a lot of great information from this book.

What a waste of paper. Everything in this book is either common sense or available more easily, quickly and in a more up-to-date state than in this format. If your professor assigns this as required reading, don't bother. You will learn nothing new from this book.

Muy buen libro!

This people did a good job!!!

excellent piece of journalism literature. Just practical and timely!

Weber quips that a journalist is a writer looking for a story and that is never more evident than here. I loved his book on baseball umpires. It had what this book lacks, a real sense of risk, of doing something completely out of the ordinary, of throwing oneself into a strange new world. This book is an account of Weber's second transcontinental crossing and along the way he compares his present journey to that of his past, as well as an extended bicycle trip across Vietnam two decades prior. (He also spends far too many pages recalling his childhood, analyzing his current romantic relationship, and generally telling us more about his personal life than I'd care to know.) On this trip he stays in hotels, eats in restaurants, and in his off hours blogs about his trip. He meets a handful of friends along the way who put him up and take him out. He even leaves the road for a funeral and later a wedding. It never feels like anything is at stake on this journey, that it's simply a book idea and a way to pass the time. More interesting challenges might have been to camp the entire route, or to have cycled across China or India or South America, or to have ridden for a time record (for his age), or to have traveled with no credit card or phone and depended entirely on the information and good will of those he met along the way. What we get instead is an account of a three-month lark on a bicycle. Weber is a great writer, but this is unfortunately not a great story.

You never quite know what to expect when you open up a book about touring the U.S. on a bike. Some spend most of their time describing the details of the ride, which we bikers enjoy. Others inject a good bit of humor. My favorite part of the book were Weber's descriptions of traveling through eastern Washington and Montana. Having lived near Missoula, MT, for a number of years, I enjoyed following his trip up the Going to the Sun Road and the sameness of eastern Montana. I confess to skimming certain portions--his descriptions of his relationship with Catherine; his mother's eulogy; crying the night before his heart surgery--but 90% of the book was a real pleasure. I enjoy his writing so much, and share his love of baseball, so I've ordered his "As They See 'Em." Looking forward to it.

Bruce Weber keeps the narrative spinning with his insights and events on his cross country bike ride. I was engrossed all the way -- and found especially interesting the comparison between this ride and his previous bike odyssey two decades before - the differences in the country and his own perspective. If this is a mid-life crisis, it is such a positive one -- as the author falls in love and has epiphanies along the way. Especially poignant is his farewell to a good friend whose death propels him to store the bike for a day to attend the funeral and give a moving eulogy. I found the rides through the barren and industrial sections just as engrossing as his tour of scenic wonders. I am in awe as the author catches up and overtakes the challenges of approaching 60. Recommended reading - and riding. His journey made me want to dust off my bike, brave all difficulties to face my own possibilities for adventure and reflection.

What a great read. I felt I was riding along with Weber, especially in the first half of the book. (Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana are so familiar to me that I knew every road and town on his route until he entered North Dakota). I applaud his motives, his effort and his writing. I loved his view of the terrain, the changing weather and the people he encountered, his passing thoughts on life, death, friendship and love. He has a journalist's eye, coupled with a memoirist's introspective point of view--at times self-deprecating (or at least very honest and modest), and always a bit humorous-engaging. This is a travel story, an interior meditation, a reminiscence, an adventure of a very personal sort that will take you along for the ride.

When the book arrived in the mail I had forgotten why I had ordered it. I am not a cyclist or even a sports enthusiast. Maybe it was because the author was an obituary writer. In any event, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and in particular his discussions about what motivated him at age 57 to take another cross-country bike trip. I am terribly curious about why anybody takes on such challenges, and especially where, as in the case of Mr. Weber, the actor has nothing to prove -- he had already done it once in addition to numerous other long-distance rides. Well written and easy to read. It has made me think about my own life's narrative as well as inspiring me to consider tackling some of my own challenges I have tended to deny.

Bruce is a good story teller and gives a great description of the real America hidden behind the headlines in "fly over country". as a fellow bicyclist of advancing years I feel both his pain and adulation as he crests forbidding hills and avoids the pot holes and fumes of today's motorized society. As a city dweller he knows how to ask the questions we all have of the folk who till the soil and harvest our food. He readily accepts the advice and hospitality from strangers (not that common among urban folk).I shall be sorry when he reaches his final stop and trades his bike and spandex for a suit and tie.

I really, really enjoyed this book and I always looked forward to reading the next chapter. Weber is a terrific writer, and brings a lot of American characters he met to life (the forlorn McDonald's manager who gave him a free apple pie when he learned Weber was cycling across the country). He also does a great job of describing the country he sees (two weeks to bike across Montana!). He also contrasts his political positions and life experiences with people he meets along the way. A really fine book.

I picked up this book and was not sure what to think having read nothing about it in advance. It's a great book. I like the author's writing style. He gives lots of background; and is not afraid to be honest about himself and his feelings. He wasn't trying to break a record or prove anything. It was just a goal and he did it; his way and I think he had a lot of fun doing it. Mahalo for taking the time to write about your experience is what I would say to Mr. Weber if I ever meet him.
