More importantly, she grasped how society has attempted to help people with severe and persistent mental illnesses.Once the asylums closed, it is estimated that 1/3 of the homeless population suffers from schizophrenia. Based on the American Psychiatric Association’s website, one in five of prisoners of our expensive prisons are seriously mentally ill. Many of the severe and persistently mentally ill people had no place to go when the asylums closed---thus, they ended up homeless. Many got into trouble and ended up in our expensive and non-therapeutic prisons.I worked as a clinical psychologist at an older asylum that was originally constructed in 1854. I decided to write an Archie Bunker version of mental health based on my experiences—TWO DAYS AT THE ASYLUM. It was supposed to be a bizarre novel about the happenings within an asylum. During the writing of this politically incorrect novel, I realized society must return to the asylums or at least provide therapeutic housing for the severely and persistently mentally ill. It is crazy what our contemporary society does not do to help people who are psychotic.

In the vast world of architectural books there are volumes covering most construction types. Railroad buildings are one type which has multiple volumes. When it comes to building types of less-than-savory functions, such as meat packing plants (actually a fascinating building form) the literature is sparse, to say the least. Thus, it is a surprise that this book would find its way to market. Ms. Yanni has done her homework well and efficiently. Arranged in general chronological order she covers the development of lunatic asylums in America and, secondarily, in Great Britain, throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth century. It is an excellent book with excellent illustrations and I highly recommend it for anyone with an interest in the history of American lunatic asylums.

A work very much focused on the architecture of the Kirkbride plan for asylums and a work well worth investing in, should one's tastes lean in that direction.

The research that was completed for this book is so detailed as to capture a different time in our history and in the history of the insane asylum. She asks and answers such good questions and captures why these buildings were built in such a purposeful way. I loved it.

I bought this book to help me make sense of remedies and it's endless formulas. On the plus side, the book clearly lays out the issues (after a somewhat clunky start) and has lots of the examples we've all come to love. It also lays out how each remedy works and why it is or isn't suited to the cause of action. But in the end I didn't use it much because the material was so dense and was often dividing my time reading the assigned material and this book. If you don't mind doing a deep dive, this is a good read. If you need something a little more quick, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

This book is very helpful in understanding the complexities of remedies. I read it in conjunction with my textbook for class. I also incorporate it in my outline.

Definitely recommend this E&E. It really lays it all out. Thank you Professor Hasen for teaching me this course in a clear and concise manner.

You can't even show the table of contents? I'm not buying a book if I can't even see the table of contents in the sample!

There's a lot of great tips and planning aspects in this book, and there are many pages to fill in for venues, caterers, dresses, coordinators and so on. There are also (almost) enough pages for the guest list. I LOVE that it has a priority box, so if you're trying to narrow down your guest list this is very helpful.So why only four stars?Well to start it comes in a three ring binder, which is great for adding or subtracting pages from the different tabbed chapters, but the ring spine broke off after two days of using it, so now it just slides around everywhere.I also felt that there were many things that were excessive, which for some soon-to-be marrieds would be great but for me it was a bit overwhelming and wasteful. I don't need 10 fields for caterers. but if you do then this is great.The price was reasonable so even though it requires transferring everything onto the computer there's still fun activities to do as a couple.But honestly after getting it and comparing it to some of the wedding sites I feel that it is a bit dated.

The Positives: This wedding planner is extremely valuable for the beginning of your wedding planning, where you are selecting the location, all your vendors, the dresses, the officiant, etc. It is the only planner I found that contains detailed lists of all the questions you should ask the businesses you are considering working with, and a list of what your contracts must contain to protect you.The Negatives: What this does not contain is a month-by-month checklist of what should be done, when. Nor does it contain samples of the "Day Of" Schedules that you will want to create to make sure everyone knows what should happen when. The huge size of this binder means you may want to remove the pages from the applicable section and place them in a folder to take to your meetings with those potential vendors.The Bottom Line: I used this in the first half of wedding planning until the location, vendors and the dress had been selected. And then I switched to using The Wedding Book by Mindy Weiss, primarily for that book's detailed Planning Time Lines (Checklists) and Wedding Schedule examples.

I purchased this many years ago when I got married and found it not only to be an excellent resource, but also a great keepsake.Now as my girlfriend is getting married, I purchased this for her as an engagement present. She too, has agreed that this is an invaluable resource, has an excellent layout and overall will be something to cherish for years to come, as she scribbles in her plans for her wedding.

I bought this planner - binder style - a few years ago for my niece who was getting married. She liked it and said it was very useful. Now I am buying this for the second time for her sister who just announced her engagement. Before ordering it again, I asked my older niece if she had found it helpful. She not only recommended it but also said that her sister had seen it and had loved it. That made my purchase of a no-brainer.

This is essentially the same resource as the smaller brides book of lists. However it does include additional resources that the smaller book does not. I recommend one of each. Both books are excellent and important tools for organization. Plus this book, the Brides essential wedding planner also has several things in it that make it a sort of scrapbook journey of the road to your wedding. In this mother of the brides opinion, both are worth every penny. One for the bride, one for the mother of the bride, or maybe the maid of honor. Whoever you,the bride, choose to be your 2nd in command you will both appreciate these excellent resources to keep each other on the same page. These resources and communication are essential keys to planning a successful wedding.

I have had a total of four wedding planners since I started planning my wedding. One did not have everything necessary to fully plan out a wedding. One was very cheaply made. One was downloaded from the internet. And the last one was this one! Not only does it have every checklist and every worksheet you need to plan a very awesome wedding, but it is constructed well. I love how sturdy it is! Another thing I love is that I can add things such as pictures and contracts because it's binder style. It's definitely work the price!

Its very huge which would have been awesome because it comes with a wealth of information, but it came broken. The three ring binding was broken and the whole thing keeps falling out. It was a gift so I was so embarrassed when I gave it to the bride to be and the whole thing fell to the floor as she held the outter casing. I have a lot of tools for scrap-booking and even my soldering gun couldnt fix it. ): Very embarrassing.

Probably wouldn't purchase again. Just has spreadsheets to fill in as you get information. Also has questions to ask vendors/photographers/ etc, which could be helpful, but everything on the internet was the same thing. I could make the spreadsheets for free.

Pale Blue Dot is a non-fiction and is Sagan’s analysis of the role space will play in humanity’s future. It was written in 1994, and therefore one of his last publications, as Sagan tragically died in 1996. The title of the book, Pale Blue Dot, was taken from the instantly infamous Pale Blue Dot photograph taken by Voyager 1 in 1990. In his book, Sagan created a short analysis of the importance of the human exploration of space. His reasons range from spin-off technology to the intrinsic value of exploration and discovery. But what struck me the most about Sagan’s book was that although he talked extensively about these as, in general, good reasons to explore space, they weren’t the best reason. Or rather, they weren’t enough. Sagan goes on to argue that the single greatest reason to explore space is the survival of the species. Something as an individual I haven't ever really thought of. It is possible that we could destroy ourselves through nuclear war, yes, but that’s not the survival Sagan is talking about. He’s speaking about asteroids. There is a chance that at some point in the future a rock big enough to destroy human life will collide with Earth. Exploring space and developing new technologies is the only way to search out and redirect incoming asteroids. If incoming asteroids cannot be redirected it is important to the species that we have settled elsewhere. Really great book, highly recommend it.

I was hoping for the entire audiobook to be narrated by Sagan but only the first few chapters are narrated by him. His wife narrates the rest. It's puzzling considering he had read his entire book in 1994 and it was made available at some point (almost the entire book can be found on youtube broken up by chapter unlike the CD set I purchased). It would've made more sense to have Ann Druyan read an introduction or include additional CDs of her readings while leaving his originals intact. My quest to find Chapter 22 narrated by Sagan continues...

Apparently I buy books while drunk, and then receive them and wonder when I thought I had time to read. Plus, I have a Kindle. But, how can you go wrong with Sagan? Love HIM Lots!

My favourite all time read, lost my old one so I had to buy another one. Great quality, absolutely love. <3 If anyone has never read this book or is debating on doing so, you will not be disappointed in our Carl Sagan! I'm ecstatic to be able to reread this!

The learning and science encompassed by this book are truly awesome -- but the humanity is greater. Writing some years ago he speaks to the moment... reminding those inflated with their sense of power that the earth they seek to control is but a small blue dot, disappearing in a sea of blackness. Precious and fragile.

My favorite book. Combines planetary science with a beautiful goal for humanity in the near future. Scattered with elegant and poetic passages.

Honestly, everyone should read this book. I have owned mine for a long time and keep going back to it. It's now 2018 and it's more relevant than ever. A brilliant mind and teacher, Sagan's writing is eloquent, thought provoking and poetic. I soooo wish he was still here to assist us with our understanding of the future.

A compelling story of how he arrived in the White House. He writes very well - or maybe well known food writer jj Goode did a little more than "help" with the writing. Most importantly, I've only had the book for a few days and tried a few of the recipes. But even a talentless cook like me can prepare delicious meals using his recipes - and they're healthy too!

Interesting suggestions for healthy recipes and eating right. We have enjoyed a collection of recipes. Especially loved the Chile-Roasted Corn, Beer Braised Pork Shoulder, Brussel Sprout Caesar Salad, and the sweet anecdotes of he and his family.

I didn’t even finish the book before I tried the Charred Cabbage—-unexpectedly wonderful! The author’s writing style is easy-going. He makes foods that sound intimidating into easy to follow recipes (for the most part—-there’s a few foods he couldn’t convince me to try)! I like his approach of doing what you can to improve your buying and eating habits without piling on guilt.

I bought this cookbook as much to read it as I did to cook from it. Sam Kass is as good a writer as he is a cook. His writing on food policy and how to eat a little better are tremendously important. The recipes are blessedly not the stuff you find on Pinterest or every food blog out there — they are both simple and sophisticated. This will stay within reach for me.

Excellent! The book consists of two i termingled parts, recipes and discussion. The discussion - on topics such as healthy shopping at the grocery - is expert and imteresting. The recipes are healthy and tasty. I’ve cooked several already.

But I didn't find this particularly interesting, or with so much that I wanted to try. Frankly, it didn't seem like much of a book. Maybe in hardcover it would have been more impressive. It was too easy to skim through recipes and feel no attraction or desire to try them. A large portion of the book in the front material is more a cooking philosophy, but not of sparkling literary value.

This is my favorite cook book. Everything is simple and easy to make. The veggie recipe are amazing. The ideas for using leftovers are great too. I also like the way it inspires you to do what works. It gives you a recipe for braised chicken with orange and olives but then teaches you how to use the method to braise chicken with with whatever flavors you like. Great cookbook that really teaches you how to cook, not just follow recipes.

I have been concentrating on eating right without processed foods for some time now and my biggest problem is staying motivated and finding recipes and dishes to make at home that are easy to make. This books is packed full of motivation as well as several great recipes in chapter 7 to help me out. I only took off one star because I would have liked to see more recipes but the few that were provided look great and I can't wait to try them all.Recommended

I have been a fan of the Atkins, low-carb diet for a long time but I have never seen it so broken down and explained like this. This book puts the diet in phases, which is very helpful, and guides you through issues that may come up along the way. The goal is to get your body to burn stored fat and this book very methodically tells you how that will happen.
